My kids bought a signed edition of this book from the author, Harry B. Knights and the cd to go with it 3 years ago when they were 5. We still listen to it over and over, and read the book...all year long. I am searcing for the rest of the series but wanted to share that this is a beautifully written version of "the first Christmas" and that Christmas is about Christ, love, giving, and caring. Wonderful!

Astronomy On Ice Review

Astronomy On Ice
Average Reviews:

At the same time an intellectual and geographical adventure, ASTRONOMY ON ICE tells the story of groundbreaking astronomical research at the South Pole through the author's pioneering scientific career. Dr. Pomerantz may well be one of the last of a breed of scientists for whom science involved, at the same time, exploration, painstaking research, sleuthing, journalism--even personal risk. If you are interested in science, explortion, personal narrative, or all three, ASTRONOMY ON ICE, is the book for you.

The story begins in 1930 with a Tenderfoot Boy Scout's first contact within hailing distance of Commander Richard Byrd and Eagle Scout Paul Siple, both seated in the back of an open limousine, in a ticker-tape parade through Brooklyn honoring their return from their first trip to Antarctica. The story ends with the author's final observing campaign at South Pole Station in 1994, and the dedication of the Martin A. Pomerantz Observatory by the Directors of the National Science Foundation and its Office of Polar Programs. The narrative is not strictly autobiographical, but it does unfold through events and personal choices of the author, along with the history of the science, the evolution of the cutting-edge astrophysical enterprise that is the centerpiece of theresearch program at the U.S. Amundsen-ScottSouth Pole Station. From his first taste of physics to his last trip to the South Pole, Astronomy on Ice presents, at a level aimed at an educatedpublic, the scientific research the author carried out over 50 years, concentrating on his efforts to arouse interest within the astronomical community in the uniquescientific resource offered by the South Pole. In the face of the initially cool reception of his idea, he conducted a number of experiments, first bootlegged and later sanctioned, with outstanding U.S. and foreign collaborators in multiple fields: solar astronomy, submillimeter astronomy, ultra high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, and millimeter measurements of the microwave cosmic background radiation. These experiments proved the singular advantages of working at the South Pole for each of these astrophysical subfields .With instruments on the ground, on ships, aircraft, aboard balloons, and even on an early satellite, the author's cosmic ray research carried him to the sub-polar and north polar regions, as well as to many other sites around the earth. These experiences led to his initial Antarctic research in 1960, when he established the first year-round cosmic ray detector at McMurdo Station. In his initial visit to South Pole, during the first of 26 austral summers in Antarctica, the author recognized a number of potential advantages of this unique site for certain types of astronomical observations. Although preliminary tests, published inPolar Research: A Survey in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences Polar Research Board, supported the idea, it was not until 1979, after numerous rebuffs, that the first authorized solar astronomy experiment proved that South Pole was the best site in the world for the new field of solar seismology: probing the sun's heretofore invisible interior by "listening to its ringing." Collaborating with both domestic and foreign experts, Pomerantzthen conducted first-time campaigns in other subfields of astronomy, each revealing that South Pole was better than anyplace else on earth for conducting their specific types of astrophysical research. Paradoxically, manifold advantages stem from working at the earth's remote rotational axis, atop the extremely cold and forbidding 9300 feet deep polar ice cap, at a pressure altitude of about 12,000 feet. The scope of fundamental problems studied at South Pole ranges from the nature of earth's electromagnetic environment, to conditions throughout the sun's atmosphere and interior, to stellar evolution, to exotic physical processes in and beyond our galaxy, to the beginning of structure in the Universe after its birth in the Big Bang.

"guud san glans, Robert Davidson" is the full name of a contemporary Haida artist whose work was exhibited at Reed College in 1991. His work is in the Haida tradition: totem poles, but with modern techniques. For example, traditional totem poles were hollowed out, but many of his are in the round, meant to be self standing. Very attractive and desirable art, with cultural significance as well.

CAPTAIN MAC reads like fiction, so fascinating. But all the more amazing because it's TRUE! Wow, what a life MacMillan lived. The author's research was impressive. His story would make a great read-aloud for Gr. 3-5, but it would also appeal to middle school up to adult readers. I'll be looking for this book on some award lists for the year--it's truly deserving!

Misia: The Life of Misia Sert Review

I simply love this book. I was twelve when I first read it and dogeared and yellow as it is, it never leaves my bedside table to this day. It is also my heavy-duty travel companion for it is laden with interesting anecdotes of the crème de la crème artists of the turn of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth. Misia was the daughter of a Polish sculptor and grew up in haute bourgeoisie Paris. Through her different marriages to the editor of an influential art magazine, a media mogul and a Spanish painter, she had the chance to hobnob with the likes of Verlaine, Mallarmé, Débussy, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Vuillard, Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Satie, Picasso, Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, Pierre Reverdy or Coco Chanel. Try reading it before you undertake your next trip to Paris or while you listen to Débussy's Faune or Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It'll give you new insights on your next visit to the Musée D'Orsay. A fascinating account of a fascinating period in art history.

If you are a "do it your selfer" you need this book. In my opinion, the title is no accurate. This book contains much more than just info on how to build small buildings. It includes how to build a good fence, how to build a smoke house, how to wire a two way switch, ect. It contains everything that is not common knowledge to the common man, and it has lots of pictures. If you live on the farm and do most things yourself, this book is a required tool.

I've been in the remodeling business since 1975, and have worked most of this time by myself.
I'm just finishing a 10 x 20 room addition for a customer. I purchased this book at the beginning of this project and have found Mr. Carroll's book refreshing and informative. There were many ideas and suggestions that were benificial. I found the rafter layout-jig very useful.
His suggestions about the "math" of the rafter was very useful, and increased my capacity to complete the job in a timely maner which helped my bottom line.
I appreciated his easy reading style and found his book enjoyable.
I wish his information on the cornice system had been a little more detailed, but found his explanations sufficent.
I found his information about clamps and holding jigs to be of special interest and enjoyed all of his book. I even bought his other book, "Measuring, Marking, and Layout", which I also found enlighting, enjoyable, fun, and benificial, to my professional standing as a remodeler.
Thanks for two great books, that help take the mystery out of some of the more complex parts of our profession.
Respectfully

Arctic Explorer: The Story of Matthew Henson (Trailblazer Biographies) Review

Arctic Explorer: The Story of Matthew Henson (Trailblazer Biographies)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In a time when the race to be the first to reach the North Pole was as daunting as flying to the moon, Matthew Henson was at the forefront of the most historic quest of his time.
Being born black though, Matthew was not in the news for his accomplishments. No, it was Admiral Robert E. Peary that received all the praise and glory for the adventures. Matthew became a master of the seas at a young age, but due to his color, not his skill, he could not advance very far. It was a chance encounter at a clothing store - Matthew as the clerk, Peary as the shopper - that led Matthew all the way to the North Pole.
The team of Henson and Peary didn't begin in Greenland. It first began in the jungles of Nicaragua. Peary was off to survey the best place to build a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After their time in the jungle, Peary shared his desire to cross Greenland's ice cap. From there, history was to be made.
Told as well as any modern-day adventure tale, ARCTIC EXPLORER has the added bonus of being a true story. It was almost 30 years after reaching the North Pole that Matthew Henson finally got the recognition for his contributions in reaching the desolate location. In truth, Peary would never have made it without Henson's capable perseverance.
In today's society, it would be without question that such a person would receive their rightful praise. But in the time of Matthew's travels, it was unheard of. Today's generation is now able to learn what a self-taught man by the name of Matthew Henson was able to accomplish.

I was happy with this book as soon as I opened the front cover. I am a new track coach who "only has a clue" about track from what I have observed from my star athlete daughter. I am pleased with this book because it has a lot of drawings which show good form in executing running, throwing, and jumping events. It is the perfect book for elementary school, middle school track athletes. It gives coaching tips after every explaination, common errors and corrections, and lots of drills to help reinforce the new skills the students learn. I highly recommend it for the beginning track coach, or the old track coach who is getting stale and needs new games and drills to keep track fun.

Mind Over Matter (Delta Expedition) Review

Mind Over Matter (Delta Expedition)

Amazing what they did, but told in a very undignified, uninspired manner. After finishing this I went immediately to Mawson's "Home of the Blizzard" and the contrast not only in writing style but personal qualities is startling. Fiennes complains endlessly, in a petty manner, about his companion-. He keeps teling the reader he is tougher, faster, better navigator, etc. yet he made some major screwups in planning (although he did a good job of avoiding the polar bears!). And the recollections are so self-centered, down to numerous photos of frostbitten toes, fingers etc, plus an hourly update of the status of every blister and hangnail. And he wrote the book after the fact! Scott, Mawson, Shackleton and many other earlier explorers didn't gripe one tenth as much even in their diaries, written in the midst of the pain and agony. And those earlier guys actually noticed their surroundings and wrote of them poetically. Since Fiennes took the trip mainly as fodder for a book (he says so in the book) you'd think he could have offered the reader much more. The earlier explorers accomplished things for the greater good - mapping, meteorlogical recordkeeping, collecting biological specimens, etc. They wrote their books, or published their journals, to finance exploration, not the other way around. And the MS cause seems dubious, considering it wasn't Fiennes' idea, but rather a condition placed on them to get funding. I found it depressing all in all. Much more inspiring to read about Scott freezing out there than this guy surviving.

The Last Place on Earth (Modern Library Exploration) Review

The Last Place on Earth (Modern Library Exploration)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently read "Scott's Last Expedition", the edited version of his diaries from his South Pole expedition. This left me interested but unfulfilled: I wanted to learn more about Amundsen and the context for both expeditions, and to get more analysis of the bald facts as related in Scott's diaries. So I turned to Huntford's "The Last Place on Earth".
I was not disappointed. Huntford narrates the entire lives of both Amundsen and Scott, with edifying discursions on Nansen, Shackleton, and other Polar explorers. Huntford knows Norwegian and thus was able to consult primary sources for Amundsen's expedition directly; he provides many excerpts from the letters and diaries of both British and Norwegian expedition members. He also reveals some of the omissions in the edited version of Scott's diaries.
As a minor quibble, Huntford only rarely gives full dates, so that I found myself frequently having to page back a considerable way to remind myself which year or even which month it was. An appendixed chronology would have been immeasurably helpful.
As other reviewers have noted, the author is highly critical of Scott -- occasionally unfairly so, as when he notes that Scott's first depot journey brought "a ton of supplies not quite to 80 degrees South" where Amundsen's party had "moved three tons another two degrees of latitude closer to the Pole", omitting to mention that Amundsen started about a degree farther south than Scott. But from the evidence Huntford adduces, even without his interpretations, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Scott was criminally unprepared, negligent, and generally incompetent. It is not as though he had no information about what he would be facing -- his previous expedition encountered nearly all the same problems, but he seems not to have learned anything from it. Huntford shows how Scott's diaries and their careful editing combine to portray Scott in a much more favorable light than he deserves -- a case of the loser writing the history books.
Huntford also reveals what might charitably be called "traditional" attitudes toward women. For example, speaking of Kathleen Bruce, Scott's future wife, Huntford says, "She was a predatory female; more predatory than usual, that is." Fortunately, since nearly all the principal figures in the book are male, this only surfaces occasionally, as when Huntford describes Amundsen as having "an almost feminine sensitivity for the undertones and cross-currents on which a leader has to play".
Despite its flaws, "The Last Place on Earth" should be among the first books you read on Polar exploration, or true-life adventure in general. Once the race for the Pole was on, I found it as hard to put down as any fictional thriller.

Bad Wisdom Review

Bad Wisdom
Average Reviews:

Bad Wisdom is the hilarious account of the two author's (one of whom is better known to discriminating connoisseurs of Heavy Metal as Zodiac Mindwarp) quest to prevent the world's destruction by nefarious forces of evil and chaos (namely Madonna and her Homoschutzstaffel, feared masters of the deadly martial art of Vogueing). The two self-proclaimed Zen masters must face hideous peril from within and without, coming cheerfully to terms with their own misogyny and homophobia as well as surmountingnumerous obstacles in their pursuit of the mystic Lost Chord, an arcane harmony necessary to thwart Madonna's diabolical plot. Mark Manning's canny but brutal heavy-metal prose provides a despicably funny counterpoint to Bill Drummond's more introspective- and subtle- recounting of the events of the story. While this book is sure to be offensive many, there are those who will find that to be one of its virtues. Bad Wisdom has the makings of an underground classic in the mold of the Illuminatus Trilogy: I highly recommend it!

The Time Before You Die: A Novel of the Reformation Review

The Time Before You Die: A Novel of the Reformation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lucy Beckett does a tremendous job of explaining the confusion of the Reformation in England shortly after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. Using both historical and fictional characters, she weaves the plot by interspersing narrative with letters written by the characters.
While most historians seem to take sides on the Reformation issue, or at least point fingers, Beckett's novel brings you into the characters themselves to "feel their pain;" be it the ex-monk turned Protestant reformer who longs to comfort his dying wife and newborn child; or the Catholic Cardinal who longs to reconcile the two sides but meets resistance by both the Vatican and the Protestants.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was it seemed a bit sluggish in the beginning. But if you can make it through the sloppy bits, it is a real gem!

The Happy Hollisters and the Mystery of the Totem Faces #15 in series Review

The Happy Hollisters and the Mystery of the Totem Faces #15 in series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is increasingly difficult to find the Happy Hollisters series of books. There were 33 books in this series, written between approximately 1953 and 1970. This particular edition is the fifteenth book in the series, written by a man named Andrew E. Svenson in 1958. Mr. Svenson was a ghostwriter for the Stratemeyer Syndicate with the fictional Jerry West receiving the credit. This book follows "The Happy Hollisters and the Scarecrow Mystery" and precedes "The Happy Hollisters and the Ice Carnival Mystery."
The Happy Hollisters are somewhat of a relic of an era gone by. The family consists of five children, Pete, Pam (Pamela), Ricky, Holly, and Sue, and their parents Mr. and Mrs. Hollister. There are also Zip, a collie, and White Nose, a cat, who has five kittens. Mr. Hollister runs a store called The Trading Post, which is similar to what was once called a general store in days gone by.
Throughout the series the children solve mysteries, usually as a family. This mystery begins with a totem pole in a neighbor's yard. The children learn of the origin of totem poles and find that there is a mystery involving their neighbor and his experiences as a prospector in Alaska.
The Hollisters soon find themselves in Alaska with their cartoonist uncle. The mystery deepens when the children encounter Native American children and shortly after meeting the Native American children criminals rob the Native Americans of their boat. The mystery continues to deepen when the children find another totem pole and that totem pole may lead them to a fabulous treasure!
The mystery in this book takes off a little slowly. However, the pace picks up as the story proceeds and eventually I was unable to put the book down. I think this story is better than average for this series and I recommend this book as a possible starting point for someone interested in appreciating the Happy Hollister series.
The Happy Hollisters series remains a reasonably good, if somewhat outdated, series for younger children, perhaps from ages 4 to 9. I suspect that by age 9 most children are entranced by more modern pursuits. Also, many children may consider families of five children to be somewhat unusual and that may take some explaining. These books may be an excellent way to introduce children to the changes that have taken place in our society over the past half century.
One last word of caution. These books are becoming very difficult to find, and thus their price varies substantially. If you are interested in reading this series you may find editions without covers that sell for less than editions with covers.
I hope you enjoy The Happy Hollisters. They are a reminder of a simpler age that was only a short time ago.
Enjoy!
