(More customer reviews)This book is an excellent treatment of this subject that is intuitive and not overly theoretical. It draws together a lot of material available in magazines and on vendor websites, but not available in book format. The author starts with the traditional op amp symbol, and derives Black's classic feedback model for various configurations (inverting, non-inverting, etc) of the op amp. A generalized expression for the closed loop gain is eventually obtained where the numerator is the ideal closed loop gain, and the denominator contains the frequency response that can be analyzed with the aid of the Bode plot. Practical design issues are logically addressed using this simple formalism including bandwidth, phase compensation for input and output capacitances, power supply by-pass requirements, distortion, etc. Care is taken to indicate what conclusions apply to all op amp configurations, and which address specific design issues. As a writer, the author is very pointed in his approach and thorough with his analyses; and will not win any awards for fiction suited for a general audience. However, I highly recommend the book to anyone trying to learn how to use op amps in a systematic way.

Code Check Electrical: A Field Guide to Wiring a Safe House Review

(More customer reviews)I suppose if you are already familiar with all of the code sections involved in an electrical code inspection, or at least the portion presented in this form, this would be a helpful form. However, if, even as a building inspector, you need occassional reminders of exactly what an electrical code section involves, this may force the user into guessing what is meant by a particular item on this form.
Unfortunately, as a result, I firmly believe, inspections done using this form will not represent a reasonable degree of accuracy. Some of the diagrams are useful. However, a great deal is still lacking in helping the inspector, layman or professional, in understanding exactly what they are looking for.
For instance, one of the items under "Other Services" in the "Temporary Power Pole" section reads "Identify insulated neutral at both ends". If the National Electric Code Section referenced (200-6b) is accurate, then this actually means that non-white wires in temporary power systems that are #6 or larger, but not the commonly used #8 copper, must be marked with a white identification tape wrapped around the insulation of the wire in the junction boxes in which both ends of the wire terminate. I'm not sure many of my fellow professionals in the building inspection profession, much less the layman, would know these specifics from this short identifying phrase provided in the form. Furthermore, it could take several books, including a copy of the National Electric Code itself, for someone to fully understand what this code section means.
As a result, I don't believe that this form is designed for the layman at all. I don't believe it will be useful to the typical home buyer having a home built. I think they could be much better served by the local code inspectors. If they were not convinced that a local code inspector would be likely to serve them well, for whatever reason, they should consider using the money to help pay for a full-fledged private inspection by a local home inspector who does new construction inspections.

Steve Colgate on Sailing Review

(More customer reviews)This one one of the best all purpose primers on sailing and sail handling. There is good advice for beginners as well as experienced sailors. Perhaps a perfect book to buy for intermediate Big Boat sailors seeking the next level. Discussion of theory is excellent and easy to follow, but the translation into practice is superb. Diagrams are very helpful.
As a long time Sailing School owner, Steve's advice comes off well grounded in practical advice that works for intermediate and advanced sailors. As a long time racer, his anecdotes intermingle the advice and give his tips a practical ring as well as making the book more readable.
Many sailing technique books are too basic for anyone other than a beginner, or are too esoteric and specific for anyone other than a very advanced racer. This book strikes a great balance. See also Melges and Conner for similar great primers.
Highly recommended addition to a sailing technique library.

(More customer reviews)I reviewed all the Children's Dictionaries I could find before selecting this one. It is a beautiful book. Word definitions are clear and easy to understand. Illustrations are colorful and plentiful. Supplementary information is useful and presented in an interesting format. This is one dictionary that is fun just to sit down and read! The CD ROM is also marvelous. My child loves playing the educational word games on it and so do it. There are several varieties of games and different levels of difficulty. The only drawback here is that the CD ROM cannot be used on Mac computers.

when I bought both "bamboo fences" and "building bamboo fences" my eldest daughter has asked me why bamboo fences by the same author(isao yoshikawa)?
This wonderful way to "look inside" the books gives us the unique chance to choose without a blind system.
bamboo fences is a remarkable photo book about this milenar japanese technique.in the building bamboo fences half the book is another basket of splendid fence photos and the other half the drawings show how to do them.
My advice: buy both together and do not tell your kids.

(More customer reviews)The previous reviewer (Boothe) is greatly mistaken about the purpose and quality of this book. Although i do not own this edition, previous editions have always been excellent. Apparently he did not realize that the National Electrical Safety Code is specifically written for utility workers, lineman, substation maintenance and construction, power generation etc. The National Electrical Code is the designated code for non-utility wiring. To rate this publication poorly because HE mistook its purpose is grossly unfair to the many talented authors of this handbook.

The pictures are perfect, the directions are clear and idiot proof, and the results...all but guaranteed! Working Alone: Tips and Techniques for Solo Building Review

I'm just finishing a 10 x 20 room addition for a customer. I purchased this book at the beginning of this project and have found Mr. Carroll's book refreshing and informative. There were many ideas and suggestions that were benificial. I found the rafter layout-jig very useful.
His suggestions about the "math" of the rafter was very useful, and increased my capacity to complete the job in a timely maner which helped my bottom line.
I appreciated his easy reading style and found his book enjoyable.
I wish his information on the cornice system had been a little more detailed, but found his explanations sufficent.
I found his information about clamps and holding jigs to be of special interest and enjoyed all of his book. I even bought his other book, "Measuring, Marking, and Layout", which I also found enlighting, enjoyable, fun, and benificial, to my professional standing as a remodeler.
Thanks for two great books, that help take the mystery out of some of the more complex parts of our profession.
