The book "A flag at the pole" is pretty good. Its a really cool book. At some times its exciting and at other times it gets boring. The reason i like this book is because it is weird. Its about 4 people that go to the North Pole and get really lost. they are from Britain. Their names are Jack, Maria, Joey, and Beth. They try to get home but they run into a lot of trouble. In the story they run into a polar bear that is really big but they.......... you have to read the book to find out what happens. The book has many exciting parts. I like the polar bear part the best. There are a lot of more problems than what I wrote. They run into deer, storm, and a lot of other things. THis book was pretty fun to review. I am done with the review now so take this book out at the library a.s.a.p. because it is a really great book

Timber Pole Construction: An Introduction Review

Timber Pole Construction: An Introduction
Average Reviews:

I served some time as a Collection Development Bibliographer for Agriculture at a university library prior to my retirement. Most of the time this amounted to suggesting worthy library materials to support the university's's ever-changing curriculum. Other times I received related reference questions regarding a variety of things. And not a few of these questions regarded the cheapest and most effective way to build both barns and outbuildings. From the early 1970s to the 1990s I continued to search and came up with the same conclusion. Timber pole construction remained the best choice. Some books presented it in a straight forward manner; others featured an array of joinery that only an Einstein could follow. But none of them had done it as well as this book on hand.
In keeping with the best in Intermediate Technology principles, the use of what you have on hand to accomplish the purpose, the authors provide diagrams and related text from cutting and preparing lumber to getting the job done. The best parts of this book are the basic methods of joinery, the use of wire, bolts and iron and basic pole construction methods from foundation construction to protect the pole for bean and roof construction. Some woodworking fanatics will respond that the resulting building may not look "pretty," or the book's presentation is too "simple." My only response to such people is that the authors' purpose was to present the most economical ways to get the job done. And to heck with aesthetics!
Included as well is a presentation on the use of pole construction for fences, retaining walls and bridges. There is a also a concluding presentation of low housing and buildings in Sri Lanka, a Malawi school building as well as a Zimbabwe pole roof being part of a rammed earth structure. The appendix is a chronological listing of library materials for further research.

The book offers a general introduction to timber poles as a construction material. Timber poles have served throughout history as a low-cost, environmentally friendly and structurally efficient building resource. As a result of the establishment of both commercial plantations and community forestry programs worldwide, the availability of forestry thinnings for poles is rapidly increasing and the potential for their use has never been greater. The book covers the processes of harvesting and protecting the poles through to specific applications in the construction of domestic and industrial buildings, and other types of construction such as bridges and retaining walls. Key areas of preservation and jointing are addressed in detail and there are illustrations throughout. This manual intends to be descriptive rather than prescriptive, providing ideas that can be developed into solutions depending on specific circumstances and a number of case studies show some ideas put into action. This new edition will be a useful guide not only to field practitioners in housing and construction projects, but will also be of interest to the non-specialist.

A Walk to the Pole: To the Heart of Antarctica in the Footsteps of Scott Review

A Walk to the Pole: To the Heart of Antarctica in the Footsteps of Scott

This book report is about the book"In the footsteps of Scott" written by Roger Mear. He was born in 1950 and gained a fine art's degree at Norwich. This Antarctic Expedetion was suggested by Robert Swan while he was still at University. He then met Roger Mear, an was soon joined by Gareth Wood. They set out to walk to the South Pole, manhauling their sledges, with the intent of tracing Captain Scott's route. The most impressive part of the story to me was when they heard that their ship, The Southern Quest, was crushed and sunk in pack-ice off Cape Evans, cutting off all their radio-links. Their hopes of getting back alive were tremendously threatening.Throughout this electrifying journey, they faced strange, interesting, and even humorous events. They dined away the well-dresed Emperor Penguins at Cape Cozier. These strange and majestic birds were in groups huddling against the ice-cliff. From this book I learnt how people survive in harsh conditions, in a cold isolated place. I would highly recommend this book to all my friends, because it's interesting and adventurous, and one learns much about this expedetion to one of the most dangerous and unspoilt landscapes in the world. Antarcica.

Pole Fishing: A Complete Guide Review

Pole Fishing: A Complete Guide

This is a well written book with a great deal of information. It has limited applicability for the United States.
We have predatory fish that are for the most part eager to bite, which renders much of the feeding information about the minnow species questionable.
The fishermen in the US are much more mobile and have better acces than is typical for Great Britan rendering much oif the advice about "long poles" redudant.
Our fish are bigger, which makes only the most powerful poles usefull for species that are larger than panfish.
After saying all that I found that my fishing for small panfish, including trout to be improved by some of the information.

This full-color book depicts and explains the creation of and the stories behind the cedar totem poles which adorn the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe's campus and businesses, all designed and carved by Tribal Artist Dale Faulstich. Few people can drive through Blyn, Washington at the base of Sequim Bay without stopping to view and photograph the colorful and majestic totems, each of which tells a story of the Tribe and its social and natural history on the Olympic Peninsula. The book explains the process by which the trees are harvested and prepared for carving, the design, carving and decorating process, the tools used, installation of the poles (which are up to 50 feet tall), and the charming stories behind the animals and characters portrayed on each pole. Some of the stories are contemporary; others harken back to the teaching tales of the S'Klallam oral tradition. A beautiful book for carvers, historians, lovers of Native American art, this book is also a book of folktales suitable for reading to children, who will love finding the brightly painted animals in each accompanying photograph.

After 25 years of marketing in the US and Europe, working with over 200 companies from Lloyds Life of London, Consumer Reports, Wall Street Journal down to smaller companies like Diesel & Gas Publications, I realized I had found only one organization that did everything right --- Santa's North Pole organization. My book, North Pole Marketing, contains 52 of Santa's Secrets that will help any group, organization or business improve their marketing, fulfillment and customer service.North Pole Marketing is my third book on the subjects of marketing, fulfillment and customer service. My first book, Circulation for Fun and Profit, was initially self-published and then published by FOLIO: The Magazine. Copies were sold in South Africa, Germany, India and all around the world. It was even translated into Swedish. My second book, CM's Guide to Basic Circulation, was written at the request of the publisher and American Business Media and sold with their endorsement. I have spoken at over 50 seminars and conferences across the US on the subjects of marketing, fulfillment and customer service. For some time I have realized that many organizations are skipping over Basic Marketing 101 and need a gentle reminder to go back to the basics. With 25 years of marketing and 12 years as Santa (visit www.LongmontSanta.com for details), I decided to combine the two and the result is North Pole Marketing, a small, fun, easy-to-read book on what it takes for greater marketing and business success.

By Airship to the North Pole: An Archaeology of Human Exploration Review

By Airship to the North Pole: An Archaeology of Human Exploration
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I carried this book with me on a long trip. Repeatedly -- on planes and in airport waiting rooms -- strangers who caught sight of the cover interrupted my reading to ask questions about the book. The brilliant blue photo on the cover, and the title, would seem to explain their eager curiousity. Note the lower left hand corner, where there appears to be a fillet of a 100 year old dirigible, lying on the beach from which airships to the north pole were launched long ago. Actually it is the ruins of a huge airship hangar, though the author discovered in the rubble the remains of two airship gondolas.
The book is superb and special: good science, good writing, and a fascinating story about technology, courage, folly and grand showmanship.
An eerie thing about this beach from which the airships were launched. In prior centuries, it was a used as a slaughterhouse by whalers. The author discovered the spine of one ancient whale nearby. In here somewhere there is a strange, unscientific, unstated metaphor about the souls of whales arising into the air. As blimps.
An absolutely first rate adventure. The best book I have come across this year.

The only travel guide dedicated to Lisbon and Porto alone, this book is well written and informative showing that the author, Louise Pole-Baker, has done her research well.
As well as listing what to see in each of the cities of Porto and Lisbon, including suggestions for plenty of walks, drives and excursions, it provides the reader with succinct but useful background information on their history, culture and festivals. There is also a directory covering entertainment, accommodation, shopping, sport and leisure and even a section on occupying the children. The last two pages contain a few basic phrases but one would definitely need to invest in a larger dictionary rather than relying on this. The book is packed throughout with beautiful and often enticing photographs.

North Pole Lost And Other Holiday Stories Review

North Pole Lost And Other Holiday Stories
Average Reviews:

I downloaded the sample of this Kindle Edition before purchasing the whole thing, and I read over an okay -- if not great -- story about a sailor who has been abducted by aliens out for a prank. I got the rest of the book, only to find that the quality dropped precipitously after that first story. After that initial tale, we get weak writing, clunky exposition, strained dialogue and infantile situations over and over again. The Christmas novella "North Pole Lost," is a painful attempt at a World War II allegory. The Easter story... to call it weak is an understatement. It's a silly, poor effort at a courtroom "drama." The formatting is totally off as well, with lines that all run together, whole segments with a carriage return after every line, and chapter headings that leave big gaps after the first letter. If that wasn't bad enough, the book is full of grammatical and punctuation errors. The only thing this book has going for it are a couple of good ideas -- the aforementioned sailor story and a decent twist on the Thanksgiving tale (although again, the execution kills it). If ever there was a book in need of an editor, this is it. Pass.

Strange. Disturbing. Bizarre even. That is the world through William H. Cooke's eyes. And he shares his decidedly different vision of culture and politics in these four short stories and two novelettes. From a zombie family Thanksgiving, through Santa's failing holy war on the Leprechauns, to the inquest into the death of the Easter Bunny lead by a disillusioned, dope-smoking cat prosecutor named Edgar, the author presents a disturbing world set against the horror that is the holidays. This book is absolutely fantastic! It's small and concise while still being detailed enough for a short trip to Lisbon & its surrounding areas (Cascais, Sintra, etc). It offers several suggestons for how to spend 1, 2 or 3 days, or even a week. The book is detailed without being too big (or too small) and includes a great fold-out map. Buying a whole book on Portugal was more information than we needed, as we stopped there for one day on a recent cruise. I'd say this book would be perfect for a few days stay.
