The argument whether Panna Maria, Texas or Parisville, Michigan was the first Polish settlement in North America has been raging for 150 years. The majority of Polish American scholars side with Panna Maria, where Father Leopold Moczygemba and about 100 Silesian families arrived in December 24, 1854.
Supporters of Parisville claim Poles began arriving in Huron County from Canada as early as 1848 and that the Parisville mission had it's beginning in 1852.
Attorney Harry Milostan's "Parisville Poles: First Polish Settlers in the U.S.A.?," published in 1977, puts forth the claims for Parisville. Unfortunately, the book is written in such a discombobulated fashion that Milostan's arguments get lost in the confusion. Still, this book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who is interested in Polish American history.
Panna Maria or Parisville? The jury is still out.
For an excellent history of Panna Maria and surrounding Polish settlements in Texas see T. Lindsay Baker's The First Polish Americans: Silesian Settlements in Texas.
