Perishing Poles - Horrible Geography
By Anita Ganeri
Book Review:
Well, it is a Geography book but not since the time of Professor Julius Sumner-Miller have we seen such a purposeful attempt the present this topic in such a witty and appealing way. The first line says "Geography lessons. Snow laughing matter are they?" and Perishing Poles continues in this way throughout. It presents geography in the language of kids spoken in the schoolyard. That said there is a very serious attempt to deal with most aspects of a geographical nature but where appropriate the wit and humour sneaks through to lighten the facts and add a smile where the going requires more devotion to concentration.
The adventurers who explored the poles are talked about with sympathy and understanding. Their individual adventures are discussed at length and interesting asides are included such as the instructions on the topic of driving a dog sled. " Round up your huskies. Huskies are horribly hardy dogs, perfectly suited to polar travel. (They also make brilliant pets - if you can get them off your sofa.) They've got thick woolly coats to keep them warm, and they're super strong ( a team of ten huskies can pull you and a fully loaded sled 50 kilometres a day). And you can feed huskies on seal blubber if you've forgotten to bring the tin opener. (By the way they go to sleep curled up in the snow. So there's no need for a dog kennel.)
Perishing Poles is very useful for someone who wishes to start learning about the geography of the poles in an interesting manner but it will also be useful for school projects.
This is a 5 star book and will be enjoyed by readers who are geographically minded or who wish to get a good reference book which is light enough to enjoy while it provides project information.
