On April 6 1909 Commander Robert Peary lead the first team ever to reach the North Pole. With him was the African American man who for twenty years had been Peary's faithful and often only companion, Matt Henson.
Henson was born in 1866 and discuses his life growing up as the nation was adjusting to the end of slavery, his early seafaring adventures, his desire to improve himself.
Meeting Robert Perry lead to a lifetime of adventure, travel and the explorations that took them where no man had gone before. This is Henson's account of the exploration of the North Pole; his relationship with Perry, the "Esquimos" who lived in the area.
This is a fascinating narrative, and Henson's story deserves to told. At the time when segregation and racism was the norm, Henson was one of the world's greatest explorer.
This book is a beautiful book, a green cover with gold lettering. It has several wonderful photographs. It is the 6th volume of Candace Press's Heritage Series.
