Sanford presents a wealth of information on the events leading up to and including the Katyn massacre and the decades-long coverup (in both Communist and western nations) of Soviet responsibility. Ironically, many past Soviet dissidents had acknowledged Soviet guilt for this crime (p. 213). Interestingly, evidence from Luftwaffe photos has recently become public that adds to the proof that the burials, and hence the massacre, must have predated the German invasion of the USSR (pp. 145-146).
Some 98.1% of the victims were ethnic Poles (p. 54). However, the "Poles" may include around 900 heavily-Polonized or secularized individuals of Jewish origin. Physical evidence recovered in the 1990s exhumations confirms the fact that a significant fraction of Polish victims fought back against their murderers (p. 108). Katyn was no emotional spur-of-the-moment murder. Instead, it resembled the acts of the Nazis: "The Soviet 1940 massacre, though, shares one fundamental feature with the trainloads of Jewish and Roma victims brought to be exterminated in Auschwitz and other death camps on industrial lines in batches according to a carefully thought out and scientifically organized method. The element of planned, impersonal and unemotional control predominated even though the chosen Soviet method of execution was about as direct and personal a relationship between executioner and victim as one could get." (p. 95). Sanford doesn't mention the fact that nearly 2 million of the 5-6 million murdered Jews also died through the "personal" means of being shot (by Einsatzgruppen, other German units, and their Ukrainian and Baltic collaborators).

Sanford quotes Neil Ascherson, who called Katyn "an act of selective genocide against a part of Poland's national elite, closely parallel to Hitler's order to exterminate the Polish intellectual class". (p. 83). Sanford himself concludes that: "It also suggests that the massacre was not aimed primarily to eliminate Poland's officer corps, so much as to weaken its general leadership elite." (p. 52). Finally, Louis FitzGibbon called Katyn: "The worst single unpunished crime in history." (p. vii).
Consider the progressive betrayal of Poland by the British and Americans, culminating at Teheran and Yalta. Unlike those who rationalize this event, Sanford acknowledges the fact that there was no danger of a Soviet-Nazi separate peace (p. 163), and that the Soviet puppet state was not a foregone conclusion given Red Army successes: "On the other hand, Western failure to tie Stalin down over the political future of Eastern Europe during his period of military weakness meant that Roosevelt had no cards left to play at the end-of-war conferences apart from a simple-minded banking on Stalin's goodwill." (p. 168)

The Soviet massacre of Polish prisoners of war at Katyn and in other camps in 1940 was one of the most notorious incidents of the Second World War. The truth about the massacres was long suppressed, both by the Soviet Union, and also by the United States and Britain who wished to hold together their wartime alliance with the Soviet Union. This informativebook examines the details of this often overlooked event, shedding light on what took place especially in relation to the massacres at locations other than Katyn itself. It discusses how the truth about the killings was hidden, how it gradually came to light and why the memory of the massacres has long affected Polish-Russian relations.

Energy: Its Forms, Changes, & Functions (Investigate the Possibilities) Review

Energy: Its Forms, Changes, and Functions (Investigate the Possibilities)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Energy: Its Forms, Changes, & Functions (Investigate the Possibilities Series) is part of a Christian-based science curriculum written by Tom DeRosa and Carolyn Reeves. The other sets in the series, which are published by Master Books, are Matter and Forces and Motion. Each set contains three, paperback booklets with color illustrations.
Energy includes 20 hands-on science lessons that cover such topics as energy, light, heat, magnets, electricity, and solar, wind, water and nuclear energy. Each lesson contains an introduction to the topic, lab instructions, an explanation of the results of the experiment, connections to other ideas related to that topic, an opportunity for students to expand on what they learned, andan assessment to determine what your child learned.
Supplies will have to be gathered ahead of time and include such items as dry cells, sandpaper, marbles, pipe foam insulation, convex lenses, insulated wire, battery holders, knife switch and thermometer. In other words, these are items that are not impossible to find, but you will need to purchase them ahead of time. Equipment can be ordered from places such as Home Science Tools. By purchasing your equipment a little at a time using books like this, it's a good way to create your science supply kit for K-12th grade.
The teacher's guide includes objectives, notes and answers to the assessment questions.
The student journal is where students write observations about the investigation and answers to the assessment questions.
Each three-book set is only $[...], well worth the price. I recommend Energy for children in 1-8th grade, depending upon the student's science aptitude. For younger students, this could be part of a complete science curriculum. Add some library books and you have everything you need for lab science. For students in 6th grade and up, this could be used as enrichment to complement a science textbook. I would also use this for special education purposes for older students.

Michael Schumacher's successful 2001 Grand Prix seasons not only brought him his fourth World Championship but also netted him a clutch of new records. Most notably his victory in Belgium raised his total of wins to 52, beating the record set by Alain Prost in 1993 - but he also set new records for the number of fastest laps, distance led and laps led. This volume examines Schumacher's place in F1 history, how he brought glory back to Ferrari and, comparing him with other genius drivers, whether he really is the greatest of them all. Topics covered include: Schumacher's second World Championship for Ferrari, and how he brought Maranello back from the doldrums; maturing from "crash and bash" to elder statesman; his skills in qualifying, in the wet, in exploiting unfavourable situations, and in making crippled cars go on to win; evaluation from drivers and team principals about how he would measure up against greats such as Jim Clark, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna; the records he has broken, how, and what records remain; and full career statistics plus the record-breaking achievements, with comparisons. There are colour photographs of Schumacher on and off duty.

Living On Lightning Review

Living On Lightning
Average Reviews:

I really enjoyed Don Green's adventure story about a strong, daring man's challenges and triumphs to stay safe in a hazardous profession, to perform worthwhile work that truly served the public, and to make a living for his family. The dangerous profession of lineman is described in sometimes hair-raising (!) detail, which I found quite interesting as it was clear enough to understand.
I also liked the overall sense of historical context... this wasn't just one family's tale but a spotlight on them amid the very difficult time of the 1930's depression. The humor sprinkled throughout sealed the deal; this book is a real keeper!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

When twenty-five-year-old Emmett Green, his wife, and baby are forced off their Oregon farm in 1932 by a rent increase they can't afford, it sets off a chain of events in which Emmett becomes a lineman working on live power lines at up to 120,000-volts in Eastern Washington. At such high voltages, electricity can jump through the air out of the sizzling, crackling wires like lightning and kill anyone who gets too close.Attracted by the high pay and steady work, which were rare job benefits during the 1930's, Emmett continues working as a lineman in spite of the danger. This story is set in the high-tension time before much of today's safety equipment and procedures were developed for line work, and one in three linemen were killed on the job.During his adventures in this job, Emmett narrowly escapes being killed.Working in windstorms, freezing winter cold, and scorching summer heat, he finds himself constantly stalked by death, and he is not certain that he will survive. His plight is no different from that of the other linemen, and there is a close brotherhood between them as they face these hardships and dangers together. In spite of the adventure, danger and tension in the story, some hilarious situations result from interactions between men in the line crew, and between Emmett and members of his family.Emmett's wife urges him to get a safer job, and he ventures into other jobs in heavy electrical industries. However, these also prove to have their dangers. After some hair-raising adventures in these jobs, Emmett returns to line work.He has a final accident that ends his career as a lineman, but surprisingly puts him into a position to fulfill his lifetime goals. This story is a work of fiction, but it is based on the real-life experiences of the main characters. Two of the older linemen who have reviewed it said that some of the narrow escapes in the story are similar to ones they have experienced themselves.

Dynamo-Electric Machinery; A Manual For Students Of Electrotechnics Review

Dynamo-Electric Machinery; A Manual For Students Of Electrotechnics

This is a good reference for the theory, understanding, and operation of electric dynamos in 1886. A short amount is devoted to electric motors as well. There is very little on AC machines, new at this date. I give it only 4 stars because many of the engravings of various machines came out poorly.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. SINCE the publication of the first edition of this work in the autumn of 1884, much has been done towards perfecting the dynamo, both in practice and in theory. Additional matter has accordingly been added, involving an increase of one hundred and ten in the number of pages and of ninety-four in the number of cuts. The new matter is partly embodied in the text and is partly added in the form ofAppendices. The latter half of Chapter V. on the Reactions between the Armature and the Field Magnets has been re-written, introducing a section on the heating of pole-pieces. The dynamos of Class I. are now divided into two sub-classes, those in which the windings are united into a closed coil, and those in which an open-coil arrangement is adopted. Many additional forms of dynamo, including the latest designs of Gramme and of Siemens, have been added and the reader will not fail, on comparing the latest Gramme Fig. 92 with the latest Siemens Fig. 129 to perceive a curious assimilation of type. Chapter XI. on Machines for Electroplating and Metallurgy is entirely new. Chapter XIX. on Coupling two or more Dynamos in one Circuit is also new the author is indebted to Mr. W. M. Mordey for the section upon the coupling of compound dynamos, and to Mr. R. M. Walmsley, B.Sc., for the summary of Hopktnsons researches upon the coupling of and for the geometrical illustra- alternate - current dynamos . tions which accompany it. Some additional information is given respecting electric motors and much of the various sections which relate to the methods of making dynamos self- vi Preface to the Second Edition. regulating has been re-written. In the Appendices a considerable addition has been made to the summary of formulae relating to electromagnets, notably the formula of Lamont. The note on Jouberts equations which formerly occupied Appendix IV. hasbeen omitted, and is replacedby asummary of the recent researches of Frolich and of Riicker on the mathematical theory of the dynamo. The Appendices on the forms of field magnets, on the influence of pole-pieces, and on electric governors are entirely new. During the fourteen months which have elapsed since the publication of the former edition a translation of thework into French has appeared. The author is indebted to the able pen of Monsieur E. Boistel for the skill and fidelity with which he has discharged his functions as a translator and in the preparation of the present revised edition he has not failed to avail himself freely of numerous suggestions and additions derived from M. Boistels labours. He has further to thank M. Baudry, the publisher of M. Boistels translation, for permission to reproduce a considerable number of cuts relating chiefly to the newer types of the machines ofSiemens and of Gramme. The author is indebted to the publishers of Fontaines Electrolysis for most of the cuts in Chapter XL, and to the publishers of Engineering, the Electrician, and the Electrical Review, for sundry additional cuts, as also to several of the firms mentioned in the preface to the former edition. The thanks of the author are also due to many friends and correspondents who have kindly furnished him with suggestions and information...

This is a remarkable book by an Austrian scientist famous in his own time for such work as his invention of kerosene. Reichenbach was interested in understanding various manifestations of life energy which even today are not fully comprehended, and even ridiculed by those ignorant of the remarkable documented validations, particularly in the medical field.
I was very glad to find this book, as I have yet to find a single source equal to this. Anyone interested in the force known variously as chi, ki, prana, od, orgone, and other names, should read this book. The Political History of Poland (1917) Review

The Political History of Poland (1917)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Political History of Poland" by Edward H. Lewinski-Corwin is without a doubt a must read for any student of Polish History. The volume is over 600 pages of in-depth historical narrative covering Poland from its Slavic tribal origins up to 1917. This book is of course very favorable to Poland as Lewinski-Corwin was an American Polish activist, but he does not do so to an extent that in demeans or lessens the high quality of the work. The depth of this history covers many subjects glossed over by many other comprehensive works in English; like the intricacies of the Polish-Lithuanian relationship with-in the Commonwealth, the institutions and constitutional framework of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Duchy of Warsaw and the role of the Polish Legions in the Napoleonic Wars are but a few examples.
The book is written to be readily understandable to someone with virtually no prior knowledge of Poland and provides a enjoyable read for those with an interest in the subject, or in other words it is not written in the garbled academic fashion so common to many modern specialty histories. However, as most people who would buy and read this book will come in with an established background in the subject matter, they will in no way find the quality and depth of the book lacking in any regard.

The Amazing Dr. Darwin Review

The Amazing Dr. Darwin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At the dawning of the enlightenment, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, stands as a voice of reason. England is beset with rumor of the supernatural--vampires, werewolves, and demons. Darwin approaches everything with an open-minded skepticism. Together with his treasure-anxious sidekick, Colonel Jacob Pole, Darwin delves deep into the mysteries that confront 18th century England finding, among other things, the Loch Ness Monster, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and a forgotten race of humans.
Author Charles Sheffield has created a charming set of stories of a past not too different from our own. Darwin contains the best of Sherlock Holmes as well as the gluttony of Nero Wolfe. I suspect that Sheffield meant his novel to be a reminder to us, in the 21st Century, to always remember to look to rational and scientific causes before we ascribe whatever we see to the supernatural or unexplainable. It is easy to see why Sheffield, a scientist, would choose Erasmus Darwin as his hero.
THE AMAZING DR. DARWIN is both powerful and amusing. Darwin is fallible enough to be sympathetic, and Pole is sympathetic without being completely brainless.

Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition (Dutton Easy Reader) Review

Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition (Dutton Easy Reader)

When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.
And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.
That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:
Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game
Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.
The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.
I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

This large format style book has excellent photographs, illustrations, and maps on virtually every page in addition to text and related detailed captions.
It is broken down into four parts - the Antarctic environment, regions, wildlife, and exploration history. Each of these four main parts are broken down further into smaller topics. For instance the wildlife section has several pages detailed to each animal type (whales, seals, penguins, seabirds, etc) and then broken down further into each specific species of them by seperate text section with stats and a map showing that specific animal location around Antarctica. The exploration section similiarly is broken down into smaller timeframes (three timeframes) of discovery and expeditions.

Illustrated guide to Antarctica's environment, geography, wildlife, and history.Antarctica: The Blue Continent is a superbly illustrated and easy-to-understand book that reveals this polar region's ruthless majesty and natural beauty. The environment is Earth's harshest, coldest, most inhospitable climate. A staggering 98% of the continent is covered with ice averaging 1.4 miles in depth; 90% of the world's ice is found in there. In spite of the cold and ice, Antarctica's shores and waters are home to an amazing variety of vegetation and indigenous wildlife-seals, sea lions, whales, penguins and sea birds-that have evolved in extraordinary ways to adapt to their unforgiving habitat. The book features natural phenomena such as a glacier made of jagged, Jurassic-era rock instead of ice, and entire mountain ranges filled to their peaks with snow.In the chapters on polar exploration, Antarctica profiles Captain Cook, Roald Amundsen, Shackleton, Scott, and others. Readers will experience why this continent has inspired so much effort and heroism in the quest to discover its secrets. This book is a concise version of the authors' 608-page Antarctica and the Arctic.

Understanding Map Projections Review

Understanding Map Projections
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is hard to rate. Where it is good, it gets a high score, but it cannot be rated 5-star in my opinion because of a serious lack of what I consider important information.
First, the good part. The book is very attractive; most map projection books stick to black and white line drawings illustrating projections and geometric properties, but this book uses color in a very helpful way. It also provides its information in a well-organized manner; each of the projections it describes has a page devoted to it, with an illustration depicting the projection (usually a world map if the projection is well-adapted to that purpose, or a map of Antarctica if the projection is better suited to smaller areas), a list of some of the important properties of the projection, and some information on where it is used.
My strongest negative criticism is related to the fact that the authors seem not to be sure how much mathematics the reader considers comfortable. Thus there are equations giving the transformation of coordinates from one geographic system to another, but not the equations that define the various projections; and I think these equations are really necessary in a book of this type.
The other criticism that I have is that the computer program used to draw the illustrative maps of the projections has too low a resolution, at least in the case of the world maps. (The maps of Antarctica seem all right.) Thus a lot of the lines have the kind of jaggedness that comes from this insufficient resolution.
I suppose "you get what you pay for" as this book is much less expensive than other map projection books, but I'm particularly disappointed because there are so many good things about this book.
