Optimizing Op Amp Performance Review

Optimizing Op Amp Performance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an excellent treatment of this subject that is intuitive and not overly theoretical. It draws together a lot of material available in magazines and on vendor websites, but not available in book format. The author starts with the traditional op amp symbol, and derives Black's classic feedback model for various configurations (inverting, non-inverting, etc) of the op amp. A generalized expression for the closed loop gain is eventually obtained where the numerator is the ideal closed loop gain, and the denominator contains the frequency response that can be analyzed with the aid of the Bode plot. Practical design issues are logically addressed using this simple formalism including bandwidth, phase compensation for input and output capacitances, power supply by-pass requirements, distortion, etc. Care is taken to indicate what conclusions apply to all op amp configurations, and which address specific design issues. As a writer, the author is very pointed in his approach and thorough with his analyses; and will not win any awards for fiction suited for a general audience. However, I highly recommend the book to anyone trying to learn how to use op amps in a systematic way.

Code Check Electrical: A Field Guide to Wiring a Safe House Review

Code Check Electrical: A Field Guide to Wiring a Safe House
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose if you are already familiar with all of the code sections involved in an electrical code inspection, or at least the portion presented in this form, this would be a helpful form. However, if, even as a building inspector, you need occassional reminders of exactly what an electrical code section involves, this may force the user into guessing what is meant by a particular item on this form.
Unfortunately, as a result, I firmly believe, inspections done using this form will not represent a reasonable degree of accuracy. Some of the diagrams are useful. However, a great deal is still lacking in helping the inspector, layman or professional, in understanding exactly what they are looking for.
For instance, one of the items under "Other Services" in the "Temporary Power Pole" section reads "Identify insulated neutral at both ends". If the National Electric Code Section referenced (200-6b) is accurate, then this actually means that non-white wires in temporary power systems that are #6 or larger, but not the commonly used #8 copper, must be marked with a white identification tape wrapped around the insulation of the wire in the junction boxes in which both ends of the wire terminate. I'm not sure many of my fellow professionals in the building inspection profession, much less the layman, would know these specifics from this short identifying phrase provided in the form. Furthermore, it could take several books, including a copy of the National Electric Code itself, for someone to fully understand what this code section means.
As a result, I don't believe that this form is designed for the layman at all. I don't believe it will be useful to the typical home buyer having a home built. I think they could be much better served by the local code inspectors. If they were not convinced that a local code inspector would be likely to serve them well, for whatever reason, they should consider using the money to help pay for a full-fledged private inspection by a local home inspector who does new construction inspections.

I purchased this book at the same time that I purchased Black and Decker's THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HOME WIRING, thinking that it would take me to the next level and provide me with additional information. In a nutshell it was merely an abridged version of the aforementioned book and added NO NEW information. It was easy to read, and easy to follow, but omitted some of the basic background information that their other book included. I think the novice home electrician could get by with either book, although I give the nod to the COMPLETE GUIDE..... as a more helpful and a more thorough instruction and reference book.

Nothing new. Just repeat from old text books under a new book heading. All theory, no practical working examples. A flop attempt in a difficult engineering area.
Th book will sell because of its name, but once you read it, you will get the same above feeling as mine.

The purpose of this book is to describe the theory of Digital Power Electronics and its applications. The authors apply digital control theory to power electronics in a manner thoroughly different from the traditional, analog control scheme. In order to apply digital control theory to power electronics, the authors define a number of new parameters, including the energy factor, pumping energy, stored energy, time constant, and damping time constant. These parameters differ from traditional parameters such as the power factor, power transfer efficiency, ripple factor, and total harmonic distortion. These new parameters result in the definition of new mathematical modeling:. A zero-order-hold (ZOH) is used to simulate all AC/DC rectifiers.. A first-order-hold (FOH) is used to simulate all DC/AC inverters.. A second-order-hold (SOH) is used to simulate all DC/DC converters.. A first-order-hold (FOH) is used to simulate all AC/AC (AC/DC/AC) converters. * Presents most up-to-date methods of analysis and control algorithms for developingpower electronic converters and power switching circuits* Provides an invaluable reference for engineers designing power converters, commercialpower supplies, control systems for motor drives, active filters, etc.* Presents methods of analysis not available in other books.

Electric Motor Maintenance and Troubleshooting Review

Electric Motor Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years. The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor vibration).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

Electric Machinery and Transformers (The Oxford Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering) Review

Electric Machinery and Transformers (The Oxford Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering)
Average Reviews:

This review applies to the 2nd edition.
I'm not an electrical engineer; I bought this book to get a better understanding of how electromagnetic equipment operates. The book is very approachable in that it does not utilize advanced mathematics (understanding basic algebra, trig, and some calculus is sufficient to understand most of the book). A reader with a good understanding of electricity (including impedance in AC circuits) and magnetism can learn quite a bit about motors, generators, and transformers from this book. Don't know how a professional engineer/educator would rate this book. If your main goal is better understandng of these types of devices, I'd highly recommend this book in used form - new is very expensive.

Designed for junior- and senior-level courses in electromechanical energy conversion, Electric Machinery and Transformers, 3/e, continues the strong pedagogical tradition established by its successful previous editions. It begins with a review of the fundamentals of circuit theory and electromagnetics and then introduces the concept of electromechanical energy conversion. The text not only provides a systematic development of a model for each electric machine based upon established principles and basic laws, but also introduces students to applications and advanced topics. It also includes information on the construction of each electric machine. Electric Machinery and Transformers, 3/e, enhances student learning of the basic operating principles of electric machines by using numerous supporting examples, review questions, illustrations, exercises, and chapter summaries. It encourages intuitive reasoning for problem-solving over the rote memorization of equations and procedures. This third edition covers the following main topics: principles of electromechanical energy conversion; transformers; direct-current generators and motors; synchronous generators and motors; polyphase induction motors and single-phase motors; the dynamics of electric machines; and special-purpose machines.

The previous reviewer (Boothe) is greatly mistaken about the purpose and quality of this book. Although i do not own this edition, previous editions have always been excellent. Apparently he did not realize that the National Electrical Safety Code is specifically written for utility workers, lineman, substation maintenance and construction, power generation etc. The National Electrical Code is the designated code for non-utility wiring. To rate this publication poorly because HE mistook its purpose is grossly unfair to the many talented authors of this handbook.
