Electric Motors and their Controls: An Introduction Review

Electric Motors and their Controls: An Introduction

This is a great book.
This book is precise and informative, comprehensive and yet very easy to read. Without laboring over theory, it gets right to the heart of all types of electric motors and controls, covering all facets from classic to futuristic. The author fully understands the field and does not obscure the hard-to-understand areas; rather, the author illustrates the operation of each type of motor in a form that YOU WILL LEARN from, even to the point of following current flow through the motor windings so that you will see the causes of motor operation, and the genius of modern motor design.
Even if you think you know all there is to know about how electric motors work, this book will fill the gaps in your understanding.

I have read this book, not a bad book, there are couple of good chapters, the ones for thermenal stability, magnetic circuits and applications.but I do recommend "Introduction to magnetism and magnetic material" as starter book because this book deals with the theory behind magnets applications. So once you read this book, your able to understand campbell's one.

This book is a comprehensive design text on permanent magnets and their applications. The author begins with a brief overview of the theory of magnetism and explains the behavior of the different classes of permanent magnets and the various production processes that lead to quite diverse material characteristics. The core of the book is a detailed treatment of the methods used to design permanent magnets, including assessments of the changes they experience under practical operating conditions. The volume also describes modern analytical techniques including the finite element method, with reference to the accurate simulation of permanent magnetic materials. Electrical engineers, condensed matter physicists and materials scientists will find this book useful.

Electric Motor Handbook Review

Electric Motor Handbook

This book was a huge disappointment. There is not a useful word in it for the electric motor end-user or designer needing an off-the-shelf electric motor.
If you're looking for information on electric motors, like: lubrication, bearings, seals, cooling, standard mount styles and sizes, common motor abbreviations (TEFC, TEAO, etc.), how to size and choose a motor, energy efficiency, preventative maintenance techniques, or anything that might be even remotely practical, DO NOT waste your time on this book.
McGraw-Hill Publishing would be wise to commission a new book called "Electic Motor Practical Handbook" covering the above mentioned topics. While I own many of McGraw's (usually excellent) "Handbook" series of titles, this is the first that I would rate a utter flop.

Electric Motor Maintenance and Troubleshooting Review

Electric Motor Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Average Reviews:

I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years. The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor vibration).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

Electric Motors and Drives: Fundamentals, Types and Applications (3rd Edition) Review

Electric Motors and Drives: Fundamentals, Types and Applications (3rd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For professional reasons I needed to get a clear overview on the fundamentals of electric motors and their drives, without delving into details. This book completely satisfied my requests. More intensively every day software is involved in the design of drives for electric motors. DSP and microcontrollers are the cores of this drives. Software engineers don't need to know the details of functionality of the motors therefore can get a benefit from reading this book in order to understand why some algorithms are implemented in the programs they develop. I found very interesting the explicit intention to explain the fundamentals of electric motors in a non quantitative way: in complicated formulas the essence of reality gets lost. Now, after reading this book, I can say that I have understood how the electric motors work.
