It proposes good info. and a easy to understand chapter on troubles shooting but i find they could put more info. and some higher level of theories without to fall on a engineer type of writting. You could find the same info. in the Answer Man pocket reference from the same editor.Ron b.

This is NOT Faraday's complete works, despite the implications of its title. A reprint of a 1914 publication, this is the Faraday of the chemical equivalent and the Law of Electrolysis, not the Law of Electromagnetic Induction. The price is right for the Master's own words on investigations into the equivalence of all different sorts of electricity, and his work on electrolysis and voltaic cells. In this work we get to see the reasoning and experiments of this most inquisitive man; we get to see how his discoveries were made, and how Nature slowly yielded her secrets to his simple, persistent inquiries. Here he gives us "cation" and "anion" and also destroys Volta's view of the voltaic cell as an inexhaustible power source. This work shows why chemists rank Faraday as the greatest experimental chemist of the 19th century.
Perhaps "Faraday's Experimental Researches in Electricity: Guide to a First Reading", by Howard J. Fisher, would be more like what a physicist would want. I have not read it myself, but I have heard from a reliable source that this is what physicists would care for. Fisher's work is published by Green Lion Press, which has published a number of other historically important scientific works.
In particular, Green Lion Publishes, in three volumes, the unabridged version of "Faraday's Experimental Researches in Electricity." This is what the real history maven would want. (...)

It is a nice, easy to read description of analog and digital filtering. Nevertheless, I think that the digital filtering chapters are not enough to explore the potentialities of digital filters and the book would benefit from more practical project examples.
On the overall, it is good for a first approach to filtering, but the reader might need something else for a deeper view of the topic.

I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years. The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor vibration).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

This book is certainly worth owning. It is 1 of 7 PLL books that I own. I use it as a reference for the basic PLL linearized transfer functions even after I found that the transfer function for the 2nd order PLL with ideal integrator is incorrect.
Best covers analog PLLs with each block replaced by a digital implementation based on the incremental improvements made in standard TTL implementations of PLLs offered over the decades. This allows the reader to fully understand each digital block and the PLL in a way that is excellent for an introductory text.
The digital PLL is a numerical implementation of each PLL function, which has by definition an analog function. One way to implement such a numerical PLL is via replacing each analog function with the equivalent numerical function, without much focus on the Z domain and digital signal processing (DSP) concepts. That is what this book does. Look elsewhere for a book with heavy use of Z domain math (consider the Kluwer Acedemic Press Book 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Analog and Digital' by Stephen (?) for more DSP math.
Best's approach is viable. I have personally designed a leading edge all-digital PLL, adding patent pending analog enhancements, and can asure the reader that straight-forward DSP approaches do not lead to the optimal designs, at least at the high data rates. Understanding of the PLL in analog form, and then adding the digital analogues is an excellent way to go. Best's book is surprisingly very different from Wolaver's book, almost orthogonal; start with Wolaver, then add Best if adding digital gates step by step to an analog PLL is of interest to you (it was to me).

World class? Here's a review of some of the chapters: Review of Feedback systems....Basic Operation Amplifier Topologies....review of passive components and a case study in PC board layout, 4 chapters if you can believe it--on filter design, a chapter on noise....all of these represent basics, rudimentary material an EE grad should have mastered...and can hardly be considered world class. Some of the remaining chapters: How to Design Analog circuits without a computer....My approach to feedback design...Jim Williams "zoo circuit", while having their merits....can all be found in the "EDN series for
design engineers". And to publish Pease's notes on Vbe.....Pulease, Pease.... "What's all this vbe stuff" can be found online for free.
In summary, this text will help augment an undergraduate EE's education. It might be useful for non-hardware or digital designer types who have to stray out of their comfort zones, into the analog domain. But there is little in this text that actually world class. Williams Zoo circuit is the the only world class design. Everything else is either rudimentary, or a rip off of other previous published material.
I downgraded the text to 3 stars because the text is somewhat deceptive as to what it purports to be. It should be more appropriately titled: "Analog Circuits: Basics To Be Mastered". The authors are competent, and well known in the field, so it wasn't downgraded any further.

This is a pocket-sized book, printed in blue, that contains a very short review of electrical theory, motors, and starting capacitors. Descriptions are barely longer than what a simple HVAC glossary would provide and are so short that a novice would be confused half the time. No troubleshooting is provided other than basic understanding of principles. No control circuits are covered.

The previous reviewer (Boothe) is greatly mistaken about the purpose and quality of this book. Although i do not own this edition, previous editions have always been excellent. Apparently he did not realize that the National Electrical Safety Code is specifically written for utility workers, lineman, substation maintenance and construction, power generation etc. The National Electrical Code is the designated code for non-utility wiring. To rate this publication poorly because HE mistook its purpose is grossly unfair to the many talented authors of this handbook.

This book is an excellent primer on the properties of electricity, the words used to describe it, how to work with it and compute the values of the descriptors. Using diagrams, formulas and worked examples, the reader is taken from the basics to the specifics of AC and DC electricity as well as the relationship between electricity and magnetism. A short set of questions is given at the end of each chapter and two major exams are included. Without question, this is the best beginning book on electricity that I have ever seen.
