Painting books are very vague when it comes to surface preparation but this book really lays out all the different methods, materials and step by step instructions on how to fix and repair all kinds of different surfaces. It helps you deal with water and mildew issues and is chock full of information relating to various wall fastners and other tricks and tools of the trade.
Very strait forward and easy to understand, and complete with lots of photographs. A must have for painters, homeowners and DIY's!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book at the same time that I purchased Black and Decker's THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HOME WIRING, thinking that it would take me to the next level and provide me with additional information. In a nutshell it was merely an abridged version of the aforementioned book and added NO NEW information. It was easy to read, and easy to follow, but omitted some of the basic background information that their other book included. I think the novice home electrician could get by with either book, although I give the nod to the COMPLETE GUIDE..... as a more helpful and a more thorough instruction and reference book.

(More customer reviews)I am in the process of building my own post and beam home with lumber we are pioneering from our own property.
I've gathered far more than the information contained in this book using great on-line resources and discussion forums on wood milling and my partner and I are both skilled enough to complete significantly better designs and plans than this author.
The book appears to be a self-published. It would have maybe been worth a 99 cent download of an e-book, but hardly worth the nearly $17 when I would have rather spent it on some more prefessional books here on Amazon.
Great if you know nothing about construction and cannot figure out how to use the A9 or Google searches to get the same information. Save your money. Buy a post and beam construction book that has real information and photos in it.

How To Build Your Own Low- Cost Timber and Beam House provides step-by-step directions from finding logs to finishing the house. I built a 1200 square foot house for $22,000, during 1992-5. Chapter 1 tells how I located my land, chose tools, and located the logs. I purchased a small sawmill, which I tell how to use, even how to cut the siding used on the house; also how to lay a foundation and get utilities. Chapter 2: How to construct the sill and floor beams. Chapter 3: How to design the house you want, using my own as illustration, then how to construct the first- story walls using simple equipment, including the hardware I used and methods of raising the wall frames with door and window frames as part of the structure.Chapter 4: How to frame the second story. I present several design options, then describe my experience with the barn style I choose. Here you'll learn how to design and raise the ridgepole, construct the barn style rafters, and set them in place. Chapter 5: How to apply the roof decking and roof. Chapter 6: How to dry in the structure and how I proceeded by laying flooring and installing siding alternately. I describe types of wall sheathing (e.g. blackboard or aluminized) and how to finish the framing for doors and windows. Chapter 7: Details about how to make and apply exterior siding from the log supply using a small sawmill, after a brief description of types of siding options, including how to install the siding for both the first and second stories. The entire process from stake layout to finish trim is given step-by-step with ample and clear illustrations so that anyone who can use tools can build a building, not just a barn, but a house, garage, workshop, or studio. The particular project is a 24 by 30-foot multi-use barn with a monolithic concrete slab floor, wood-framing and gable roof. Included are foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical, heating, insulation, roofing, siding. After you build this, you can build essentially anything--the principles remain the same.

(More customer reviews)I've been in the remodeling business since 1975, and have worked most of this time by myself.
I'm just finishing a 10 x 20 room addition for a customer. I purchased this book at the beginning of this project and have found Mr. Carroll's book refreshing and informative. There were many ideas and suggestions that were benificial. I found the rafter layout-jig very useful.
His suggestions about the "math" of the rafter was very useful, and increased my capacity to complete the job in a timely maner which helped my bottom line.
I appreciated his easy reading style and found his book enjoyable.
I wish his information on the cornice system had been a little more detailed, but found his explanations sufficent.
I found his information about clamps and holding jigs to be of special interest and enjoyed all of his book. I even bought his other book, "Measuring, Marking, and Layout", which I also found enlighting, enjoyable, fun, and benificial, to my professional standing as a remodeler.
Thanks for two great books, that help take the mystery out of some of the more complex parts of our profession.
