I couldn't disagree with the previous reviewer more strongly. This book is awful: a poorly-organized mishmash of topics generally capitulated via equation with little depth and no explanation offered.
The index is a joke: on one recent occasion I was disappointed to find that there is not a single heading under the word "thermal". Surely a book on PM motors would have at least one passage talking about some thermal property that would merit inclusion?
Overall, I have become accustomed to being disappointed when looking to this book for help. Anyone interested would be better advised to get Hanselman's excellent Brushless Permanent Magnet Motor Design instead.

'Linear Synchronous Motors' is a worthwhile book on linear motors, with a strong bias toward the transportation and automation fields. There is much useful information here, the writing is reasonably clear and the explanations good.
The book is let down by the terrible quality of the reproduction and lackluster editorial checking. The reproduction resembles poor photocopying in many cases - I could have got a better result printing a PDF of it on an ordinary laser printer. This is annoying, as this book is not cheap. It also contains numerous small spelling errors; inexcusable with modern word processing; doubly so had the editorial checking been up to the mark.
I expect a book of this sort to have first class, clear printing with top-notch quality control and editing in evidence. This isn't up to that standard, which is a shame, as the content merits such care.
A good book, let down by a cheap publisher. Four stars for the technical content alone.

This is a great book.
This book is precise and informative, comprehensive and yet very easy to read. Without laboring over theory, it gets right to the heart of all types of electric motors and controls, covering all facets from classic to futuristic. The author fully understands the field and does not obscure the hard-to-understand areas; rather, the author illustrates the operation of each type of motor in a form that YOU WILL LEARN from, even to the point of following current flow through the motor windings so that you will see the causes of motor operation, and the genius of modern motor design.
Even if you think you know all there is to know about how electric motors work, this book will fill the gaps in your understanding.

This book is edited by Professor T J E Miller of the University of Glasgow, who has also contributed to two key chapters. One is on energy conversion in switched reluctance (SR) motors (pointing out that saturation cannot be ignored, which then leads on to a good treatment of the "standard" non-linear analysis method using magnetization curves); and the other is on average torque control. There are other chapters on history, noise, instantaneous torque control, sensorless control, a practical application, drive development and testing, and the SR generator.
In spite of the tsunami of disinformation still washing over the subject of free energy, there is growing awareness that the so-called "magnet motors" which have been known since at least the 1970s are as good a bet as any for the first practical free energy devices. (This assumes that the reasons for their suppression, which are political, not technological, can ever be overcome). Magnet motors require electronic controllers similar, in many respects, to the SR motor controllers covered in this book. For example a motor exploiting electromagnet-to-permanent magnet repulsion (i.e. shape changes in opposing magnetic fields), like the Kure Tekko motor, will require energy stored in the electromagnet's field to be returned to the source via some kind of regeneration circuit at the end of a stroke, just as is done for the stored magnetic energy of a SR motor.
For a while, towards the end of the 20th century, successful magnet motor inventors in both Japan and the US sought and were granted patents. Examples are JP55053160, JP55114172 and especially JP55144783 for precursors to the Kure Tekko motor, and US Pat 5,436,518 for the Japan Science Research Laboratory motor, which featured on the Fuji television network program broadcast on 20 October 1993, where it was endorsed as a free energy motor by professors of electrical engineering from Meiji and Waseda universities (among others). The US inventors were always more equivocal; see e.g. US Pat 5,625,241 for the Galtech motor.
Remarkably, this book cites as a "significant patent" an important US magnet motor patent, the 1994 Lipo/Liao patent (US Pat 5,304,882), issued to the prestigious EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute).
There have of course been further developments in the control of SR motors in the decade since this book was first published, but it still remains a very useful reference.

I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years. The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor vibration).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

This review applies to the 2nd edition.
I'm not an electrical engineer; I bought this book to get a better understanding of how electromagnetic equipment operates. The book is very approachable in that it does not utilize advanced mathematics (understanding basic algebra, trig, and some calculus is sufficient to understand most of the book). A reader with a good understanding of electricity (including impedance in AC circuits) and magnetism can learn quite a bit about motors, generators, and transformers from this book. Don't know how a professional engineer/educator would rate this book. If your main goal is better understandng of these types of devices, I'd highly recommend this book in used form - new is very expensive.

So I purchased this book to get the latest knowledge on motors, but instead I purchased a poorly written book by two teachers who have never done any of the work they are trying to outline in this text,I am an Industrial Electronics and motor control Maintenance Technician with 25 years experience,so I know what I am talking about, after reading this poorly written and presented collection of really bad ideas on how to troubleshoot motors I could write a much better book than this collection of trash! All of the ideas pictures and concepts presented in this text have been obsolete for about 30 years. My text books from college are about 15 years more advanced than this book and they were written in 1984. I noticed there are no line diagrams or much mention of programmable controls,or timers and relays, overload heaters for motor overcurrent protection instead of the fuses listed, you don't use fuses to protect a motor you use overload heaters an industry standard, these guys don't have a clue of how to troubleshoot a motor or check for amperage draw from a motor, you use a digital clampon ammeter not a hardwired inline ammeter, they don't explain how to ohm out a motor with a meter or use a megger to test insulation.It also looks like they got a really old square D catalog and used the pictures out of it for the book they are poorly reproduced, but if your are looking for info and circuits and trouble shooting techniques manufactures of components and motor staters and motors can give you much better and updated info from there website than you can derive from this peice of drivel!! I could not recommend this text to anyone who wants to learn about motors, if you think this is a good book then you know absolutely nothing about motors and controls or troubleshooting, american technical publishers produce some of the best motor and control books.Not audel.
