I had been waiting for the revised edition to be released and now I have it I am very disappointed. Just a lot of pictures and old diagrams of grid jumping. Over half of the book is about jumping. People who jump will not learn anything new and will do better with 101 Jumping Exercises: For Horse and Rider. People who want innovative ways to use cavallettis on the ground for strengthening and training young horses, like I do, will be disappointed. Only 8 out of 144 pages focused on ground work. Not worth buying.

This revised and updated version of Reiner Klimke's classic book on cavalletti work now has an extended section on gymnastic jumping by the author's daughter, Ingrid Klimke. First published more than 30 years ago, the original information on schooling horses over cavalletti is still valid today but the book also encompasses the changing face and requirements of the modern sport horse.

I love this book. It makes sense on the page, and sense when I am riding. I've never had a lesson with Tina, but I tried out some of the exercises and they really work. It's as if she remembers what it's like to be an ordinary rider (though she's obviously not an ordinary rider and trainer herself!) and she has designed these exercises to suit the ordinary rider, and the more ambitious one, providing ways to train yourself for that. I also do a bit of teaching, and I tried out some of the simple stuff on my pupils and they loved it too! It's like I've got a never ending pot of ideas at my finger tips. This book will improve your riding no end.

This book is my bible, i have 3 or 4 copies: one for the barn, one for my house, and spares in case i leave one out in the rain (I have done so already). It is the best method ever, simple, straight forward, progressive. This method really works. It eliminated having to think about what i should do when i want to jump... I LOVE IT

U.S. Three-Day Event Team veteran James Wofford shares his secrets for training great jumpers. He assures riders that horses who are taught to jump using a gymnastic system soon become confident and efficient over fences. He carefully details how to train young horses using gymnastics-clearly illustrating how to set up each grid. He also provides a systematic sequence explaining which gymnastic to use when, depending on the horse’s level of training and the rider’s focus, whether it be cross country or show jumping. Exercises are given to help correct existing bad jumping habits in older horses such as refusals, run-outs, or improper striding. Whether you are just learning to jump or you are a seasoned expert, Wofford provides ample exercises for setting up your horse to succeed over fences. JAMES WOFFORD is one the world’s leading experts on gymnastic jumping. He was a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team for over twenty years, winning two Olympic Team Silver Medals and four National Championships. For the last two decades he has concentrated on training the cream of America’s young event riders using the time-tested methods described in this new guidebook.

101 Dressage Exercises for Horse & Rider Review

101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The idea behind this spiral bound book and the set up of it are both great. Lessons are on top and bottom of the pages, i.e. in vertical format rather than in horizontal. Within each lesson, the set up on the page is wonderful. A large portion of the upper page is taken up by the arena diagram which shows very clearly what the exercise will do (walk, trot, canter, halt, sidepassing, etc.).
Many lessons also have a brief "Benefits" blurb to the left of the diagram, indicating in plain language why the execise should be done. When appropriate, beneath the Benefits part, a key describes what different notations in the diagram stand for, e.g. a cone, a leg yield, ground poles, W/T/C, etc. I was very impressed with the details on that top portion.
The second half, i.e. the lower page, is where I have downgraded the 5.0 to a 4.0 (which really should be probably a 4.25 stars). This page is also split vertically in two halves. "How do I ride this?" and "Keep in mind." The former is a Step-by-Step / cookbook description of the exercise, the latter a short few-liner note on what should be kept in the back of one's mind. The "Keep in Mind" portion is rather nice and often will refer back to other exercises in the book or will be amended by notes on a particular subject such as "Riding on a loose rein."
The main qualm I have about the lower page stems from the extreme brevity of descriptions. I would like to see a bit more discussion on how to deal with problems that arise. In some cases there are two pages interjected that deal with particular issues such as "Straightness" or "Lateral Work," but none really mention in detail where issues can arise and how to counteract problems. That is the main reason for giving this book a 4.0 rather than a 5.0
Overall, I liked the book. It is good to work with, especially for those of us who are always looking for new patterns, new things to do and sometimes just need a fresh approach to engrained arena work. Very refreshing, easy to use, although not for the advanced (Level 3 and up) dressage rider, but definitely from Novice through the intermediate or intermediate-advanced rider (Training to Lower Level 3).

Dressage, the equestrian practice in which a horse makes highly precise movements in response to barely perceptible signals from the rider, has taken hold of America’s equestrians. Participation rates have risen by 200 percent over the past twenty years, as baby-boomer riders have discovered dressage to be less strenuous and dangerous than jumping, yet offering the satisfaction of mastering techniques and the opportunity to compete and advance to higher levels of achievement. 101 Dressage Exercises for Horse & Rider, presented in Storey’s highly visual "Read & Ride” format, features a full arena diagram and stepby- step instructions for each exercise. The exercises address all levels of riders, starting with the basics and moving up to maneuvers developed by members of the U.S. Olympic team. Training tips and masterly guidance make this an indispensable reference for all dressage riders. Even Western riders interested in enhancing their performance will find these foundational exercises useful. Dressage riders are information-hungry readers, often referred to as "the thinking horsemen.” This book’s sturdy format, combbound and drilled so it can be hung on a ringside post, will appeal to these reading riders, whether in or out of the saddle.

101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider Review

101 Jumping Exercises for Horse and Rider
Average Reviews:

I haven't even finished reading this book yet, but I just have to say how fabulous it is. I have just started my youngster over fences and have found this guide invaluable already, with 25 exercises involving just ground poles, it is already well used. The exercises build up in difficulty so you are always making progress and at the same time having fun and educational schooling sessions with your horse. I think there is something for everyone, beginner to advanced.
As a budget conscious rider training predominantly on my own, I have found these types of guides priceless (see my other reviews) and they have really helped me to formulate a schooling plan each week and our progress has been very rewarding. I noticed that other riders at the barn were using the poles I left out in the arena and so I started posting the excercises on the bulleting board each week - inspiring everyone and creating great feedback and support. I know this is a book I will get a lot of use out of!

Easy-Gaited Horses: Gentle, humane methods for training and riding gaited pleasure horses Review

Easy-Gaited Horses: Gentle, humane methods for training and riding gaited pleasure horses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This by far the most complete and the clearest book on gaited horses I have read and I have read and own all of them. I started out in dressage and though I had learned that one must ride a gaited horse differently, this book has shown me why. Her book compares the different horse disciplines and shows the reader how and why one must approach gaited horse riding with "the gait" desired in mind. I have been looking for a gaited horse trainer that doesn't use the harsh techniques used with so many of the traditional methods. She is the only expert in the field that comes at gaited horse training from the viewpoint of the horse and she seems to appreciate that a horse treated in a kind and gentle way will become safe, well mannered, and relaxed companion that will work with the rider to gait well. Hooray for Ms. Zeigler and her gentle techniques that work for my horses and will undoubtedly work for owners of gentle gaited breeds.

For more than 30 years, Lee Ziegler has been one of the foremost advocates of gaited horses in North America and Europe. Through her writing and in her clinics, she has introduced countless riders to the pleasures of riding a horse that is calm, obedient, relaxed, alert, sure-footed, easily maneuvered, and consistent in his gait. Now, in Easy-Gaited Horses, Ziegler offers a comprehensive guide to riding and training gaited pleasure horses. And unlike the old methods that called for manipulation of a horse's hooves or other gimmicks that could be cruel, Ziegler offers training methods that are gentle, humane, and produce a gaited horse that can be ridden in his gait barefoot, trimmed to his natural angles, with a mild bit, or even without one.Ziegler begins by defining various types of gaits, explaining how they look to an observer and how they feel to the rider. Next, adopting a whole-body approach to training, she reveals the importance of understanding equine anatomy. She then discusses how to introduce the horse to a variety of gaits: the ordinary walk, the flat walk, the fox trot, the running walk, the saddle rack, and the canter. She explains how to ride a multi-gaited horse, how to handle gait problems, and even how to retrain an easy-gaited show horse for pleasure riding. Ziegler also discusses how to train gaited foals and colts and explains what preparation is necessary before taking the young horse on his first ride.As riders grow older, comfort on horseback becomes more of an issue. That's where easy-gaited horses step in. Their unique, smooth gaits allow riders to enjoy time in the saddle with minimal physical exertion.

Cavalletti: Revised Edition: Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles

I'm not a brave jumper and this book has really encouraged me to incorporate more ground poles and cavalletti into my regular training regime.
My main interest is dressage but my enthusiasm for trying more pole and jumping work has been set alight by this book. They cover everything from the most basic information like boots for your horse, distances for different gaits and even how to adjust side reins correctly, right through to patterns and techniques to keep things interesting.
The language used is simple, conversational and incredibly useful. Each topic - lunging, straight work over poles, gymnastic jumping etc - is addressed in detail with troubleshooting solutions provided for common problems. There are sample work schedules and cavalletti patterns for most objectives. This is a true working book that will be valuable to all levels of rider.

Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star Review

Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Aime Tschiffley, the most resiliant and capable of Buenos Aires' schoolmasters, wrote this truly astonishing story of his ride from Argentina to Washington, DC. South and Central America before WWII was still in many ways as the old Spanish had left it - some of it deliciously civilized, much of it as wild as can be imagined. With his two remarkable Creole horses, Mancha and Gato, Tschiffley journeys through a world that no longer exists today and seems remote and ancient to the modern reader. Tschiffley's prose is somewhat matter-of-fact, but in some ways this serves to emphasise the very strangeness of the countryside and its peoples, and underscores the author's own courage. Tshiffley is a product of his times, and some of his sentiments are out of place today, but this too places this book within a time and place long past. From "Don Roberto's" oddly moving introduction to journey's end in the United States, one grows to admire Tschiffley and love his horses, the two friends Mancha and Gato.
