The Missing Diary of Admiral Richard E. Byrd Review

The Missing Diary of Admiral Richard E. Byrd
Average Reviews:

This book had some great stuff in it but it appeared to be run off on an old one-sided copier. All of the pictures are in black and white and seemed to be there only to take up space. This entire "book" could have been type written on two pages, minus the pictures. When I was done, I have to say that I was a little upset that I had to purchase this when I have gotten so much more information on the internet for free. If you can borrow it from a friend (for ten minutes, as that is how long it will take you to read), I recommend that you do that instead.

Walking the Gobi: 1,600 Mile-trek Across a Desert of Hope and Despair Review

Walking the Gobi: 1,600 Mile-trek Across a Desert of Hope and Despair
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I could barely put this book down. The adventures that Helen Thayer and her husband encountered as they walked across the Gobi Desert are bigger-than-life. As a reader, you feel as though you are on the trail with them, step for step, sweating, thirsty, tired and dirty. Sprinkled throughout the book are wonderful and heartfelt encounters with Mongolian nomads who share what little they have with these two American travelers. Scorpions, snakes, smugglers, rifle-toting border guards -- it's all here. What makes it all the more amazing is that Helen Thayer was in her early 60s and her husband in his 70s when they made this trek.
It is so refreshing to read an adventure tale from a woman's point of view. Helen's voice is authentic and down-to-earth. Yes, she can walk 1600 miles through the desert with the best of them, despite a serious hip and leg injury, but she also frets about the animal carcasses she sees along the way, wondering about the creatures' painful last moments. She worries about the plight of the nomad families they meet, but also recognizes and appreciates their quiet strength and close connection to the land. She'll make you laugh at the antics she and her husband go through to avoid eating some of the food and drink given to them by the warm and welcoming Mongolians. And you may find yourself in tears as their once-in-a-lifetime journey draws to an end. A wonderful adventure tale!

Crossing Antarctica Review

Crossing Antarctica
Average Reviews:

Despite what others might say, this book is about an adventure. Doing the unthinkable and something that no one has done before is by it's very nature an adventure. Others may have you believe that unless something catastrophic happens it is not an adventure, but usually bad things happen from lack of proper planning. Don't discount Steger as a true adventurer simply because he is smart! People who have done a fractional amount of the exploration Will Steger has should appreciate this book. However, if your idea of adventure is sliding a little closer to the fire in your stocking feet while you read about some blokes misfortune via improper planning then read another book.

Trekking in Ecuador Review

Trekking in Ecuador
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently spent a month trekking in Ecuador with this guidebook and I would recommend it to anybody interested in hiking in this beautiful country. There is something for everyone with short dayhikes near travelling hubs, week long treks through remote mountains, hikes that end in hotsprings and hikes that take you in search of the elusive Ecuadorian wild orchid. This guidebook contains all the information you need to set out on your own and the hikes I did were unforgetable. I waited untill Quito to buy a guidebook so I could compare all the books available and I can say now that this is, by far, the best hiking guide for the country. I will be back in Ecuador to walk some more of the beautiful trails described in Trekking in Ecuador.

The most up-to-date trekking guide to one of the world's most biodiverse nations. Includes a thorough introduction to Ecuador and its people.No-nonsense information on what to expect, preparations, and safety.Twenty-nine detailed trek descriptions, with 50 photos, 33 topographic maps, and 27 elevation profiles.Comprehensive appendices, including lists of trekking companies, emergency contacts, and conservation organizations.Ecuador's special appeal to trekkers, day-trippers, and nature lovers can be summed up in one word: accessibility. The country's unique combination of small size, exceptional geographic and biological diversity, and good transportation infrastructure places an outstanding variety of splendid natural experiences within easy reach of the adventurous visitor. Ecuador boasts more than forty-five protected natural areas, including national parks and private reserves, almost all of which offer trekking and day-hiking possibilities. Many longer treks span several natural regions, from the highlands down toward the Amazon jungle or coastal plain. Ecuador receives many visitors (approximately 500,000 a year), but as yet relatively few people come specifically to trek. Unlike well-known trekking venues such as Nepal, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, and Chile's Torres del Paine National Park, trails in Ecuador are never crowded and offer virtually unlimited scope for exploration. Trekking in Ecuador is easily combined with a visit to the country's more traditional destinations: the Galápagos Islands, colorful indigenous markets, Amazon jungle lodges or Pacific coast beaches.

Terra Antarctica: Looking into the Emptiest Continent Review

Terra Antarctica: Looking into the Emptiest Continent

Terra Antarctica: Looking Into the Emptiest Continent is the true-life story of award-finalist author William L. Fox's journey to explore the Antarctic, the "largest and most extreme desert on Earth". A medley of artistic, cartographic, and scientific images intertwine in his reflections of the remote and brutally harsh continent. A handful of gorgeous color photographs illustrate this compelling tale tempered with a scientist's respect for and love of nature's glory.

The Great White South: Traveling with Robert F. Scott's Doomed South Pole Expedition Review

The Great White South: Traveling with Robert F. Scott's Doomed South Pole Expedition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ponting's book is an absolute must for anyone interested in Scott's Last Expedition. His narrative is witty and engaging throughout, whether it be concerned with his fellow travellers and their experiences, or related to the native wildlife - his chapters on seals and penguins are a particular delight.
The only downside to this edition is that the publishers unaccountably saw fit to provide a platform for another of Roland Huntford's incredibly tiresome and bitter rants about Captain Scott himself, by inviting him to contribute an unworthy, though mercifully short, introduction. Huntford's by now largely discredited iconoclasm despoils some of the dignity and freshness of Ponting's own work. Just ignore it and enjoy Ponting himself.

Frommer's Lisbon Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) Review

Frommer's Lisbon Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket)
Average Reviews:

This book is absolutely fantastic! It's small and concise while still being detailed enough for a short trip to Lisbon & its surrounding areas (Cascais, Sintra, etc). It offers several suggestons for how to spend 1, 2 or 3 days, or even a week. The book is detailed without being too big (or too small) and includes a great fold-out map. Buying a whole book on Portugal was more information than we needed, as we stopped there for one day on a recent cruise. I'd say this book would be perfect for a few days stay. I highly recommend any book in this series.

White Paradise: Journeys to the North Pole Review

White Paradise: Journeys to the North Pole
Average Reviews:

I purchased this book for a co-worker. Select people at our photography studio buy gifts for each other, but this recipient is always left out. For the price today, you cannot convince me that there is a better gift. It is a substantial book, about 11x14 size, has some heft to it, and has a beautiful cover that only adds to the presentation. I am proud to give this, no matter what the cost, to a friend and coworker that has given me many things over the last few years. I would be proud to own this book, and I would not hesitate to give it to anyone as a gift. It was a steal on amazon. Had I not been bargain shopping, I would easily have expected to pay $40+ for this book and would have not been disappointed.

The North Pole's fierce beauty has drawn many explorers to its unforgiving environment. Francis Latreille is one of the intrepid, having participated in expeditions there for the last 20 years, and in White Paradise he introduces readers to the region's inhabitants and surroundings, illustrating its dramatic allure with his photographs. More than a tribute to the Arctic Circle, Latreille's book covers the growing threat to the North Pole's very existence—global warming—and documents this phenomenon's devastating effects, specifically the melting of the North Pole's ice fields and gradual diminishing of its massive glaciers. It includes work from the famous Mammuthus expedition in 1999, where a virtually intact mammoth carcass was extracted from the North Pole's tundra. White Paradise is Abrams' contribution to the International Polar Year, revealing with beauty and dedication this mysterious frozen corner of the world.

Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star Review

Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Aime Tschiffley, the most resiliant and capable of Buenos Aires' schoolmasters, wrote this truly astonishing story of his ride from Argentina to Washington, DC. South and Central America before WWII was still in many ways as the old Spanish had left it - some of it deliciously civilized, much of it as wild as can be imagined. With his two remarkable Creole horses, Mancha and Gato, Tschiffley journeys through a world that no longer exists today and seems remote and ancient to the modern reader. Tschiffley's prose is somewhat matter-of-fact, but in some ways this serves to emphasise the very strangeness of the countryside and its peoples, and underscores the author's own courage. Tshiffley is a product of his times, and some of his sentiments are out of place today, but this too places this book within a time and place long past. From "Don Roberto's" oddly moving introduction to journey's end in the United States, one grows to admire Tschiffley and love his horses, the two friends Mancha and Gato.

I got the Leki Super Micro travel cane to protect a recovering knee during a long trip. The adjustable length meant I could keep it in my bag ready for challenging conditions, from uneven country lanes to sidewalks. It increased my mobility, speed, and confidence and cut down on discomfort. I walked a lot and came home feeling better than when I left.
It seems well designed and I found it convenient and easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a cane or walking stick for occasional support.
