The Spiritual History of Ice: Romanticism, Science, and the Imagination Review

The Spiritual History of Ice: Romanticism, Science, and the Imagination
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For humanity the Earth's Poles have been mythological in both concept and fact. Our obsession with them has been discussed in several outstanding books that explore the place of the Arctic and Antarctica in the human imagination. An excellent place to start any investigation of this issue is Eric G. Wilson's "The Spiritual History of Ice: Romanticism, Science, and the Imagination." Wilson asserts that near the end of the eighteenth century scientists, writers, mystics, and others combined to reinterpret ice, glaciers, and cold places as something beyond a traditional wasteland, indeed, a place of romance and spirituality.
While much of this reinterpretation represented wishful or even wrongheaded thinking, the romantic imagination inspired by it energized Western Civilization's quest to explore it. Focused on the literary heritage of ice as mythical place, Wilson offers a convergence of crystallography, esoteric glaciology, group psychology, and polar exploration into a portrait of an age and its fascination with frozen phenomena. His principal characters are the many writers, poets, artists, and popularizers who created an aura about the ice of the Poles that prompted Western Civilization to engage in its exploration and subjugation. There is less in this book about Frederick Cook, Robert Peary, Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and other explorers than there is about romantic writers who popularized the endeavor.
"The Spiritual History of Ice" represents an interesting approach, offering a literary turn in the analysis of polar exploration. Like many other such efforts at postmodern analysis, however, it is only partially successful. No doubt, Wilson is correct in laying the popularization of the Poles at the feet of the great communicators of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But there is more at play here. Much of the exploration was motivated not by romance but by a hardheaded quest for economic gain. The search for the Northwest Passage, which actually did not exist but had long been hypothesized, prompted a lion's share of effort in the Arctic in the nineteenth century. All of the romanticization of Thoreau, Poe, Emerson, Shelley, or anyone else cannot overcome the basic fact that expeditions were pursued for a practical reason.
Still there is a real value to this work, showing especially the relationship between the act of exploration and the belief system that fostered it. "The Spiritual History of Ice" serves as a useful analysis of this relationship.

At the end of the eighteenth century, scientists for the first time demonstrated that ice is not lifeless but vital, a crystalline revelation of vigorous powers. At the same time, several Romantic figures-including Coleridge and Poe, Percy and Mary Shelley, Emerson, and Thoreau-challenged tradi-tional notions of ice as waste and instead celebrated crystals, glaciers, and the poles as special disclosures of a holistic principle of being. In this engaging literary history, Eric Wilson explores the secret history of ice and the romantic imagination inspired by it. The result is a fascinating explor-ation into the Romantic imagination and its intersection with crystallography, the glaciology of the Alps, and polar exploration.

Today more than 6 million people worldwide engage in Nordic Walking regularly, and participation is growing fastest in the United States. The 87.5 million Americans who already walk for fitness have been coming to Nordic Walking in droves. The motion is similar to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing but without skis, snowshoes, or snow–and akin to the Nordic-Track, Crosswalk Treadmill, and other apparatus but done outdoors in the fresh air and scenery. Easy to learn and easy on the budget, Nordic Walking can be done anywhere and has many advantages over regular walking, including:• The specially designed, lightweight poles relieve some of the stress on the ankles, knees and hips and transfer it to the upper torso, making it a full-body workout.• Nordic Walking burns up to 45 percent more calories than walking without poles. It is equally effective for new exercisers just off the couch, dedicated walkers, long-time runners who are now trying to favor their knees, anyone rehabilitating from an injury, and even too-sedentary seniors. Nordic Walking is a recreational and fitness activity for the 21st century–and Nordic Walking the first complete guide to how to get started with this fun and healthy new sport.

Perishing Poles - Horrible Geography
By Anita Ganeri
Book Review:
Well, it is a Geography book but not since the time of Professor Julius Sumner-Miller have we seen such a purposeful attempt the present this topic in such a witty and appealing way. The first line says "Geography lessons. Snow laughing matter are they?" and Perishing Poles continues in this way throughout. It presents geography in the language of kids spoken in the schoolyard. That said there is a very serious attempt to deal with most aspects of a geographical nature but where appropriate the wit and humour sneaks through to lighten the facts and add a smile where the going requires more devotion to concentration.
The adventurers who explored the poles are talked about with sympathy and understanding. Their individual adventures are discussed at length and interesting asides are included such as the instructions on the topic of driving a dog sled. " Round up your huskies. Huskies are horribly hardy dogs, perfectly suited to polar travel. (They also make brilliant pets - if you can get them off your sofa.) They've got thick woolly coats to keep them warm, and they're super strong ( a team of ten huskies can pull you and a fully loaded sled 50 kilometres a day). And you can feed huskies on seal blubber if you've forgotten to bring the tin opener. (By the way they go to sleep curled up in the snow. So there's no need for a dog kennel.)
Perishing Poles is very useful for someone who wishes to start learning about the geography of the poles in an interesting manner but it will also be useful for school projects.
This is a 5 star book and will be enjoyed by readers who are geographically minded or who wish to get a good reference book which is light enough to enjoy while it provides project information.
Reviewed by Tom Hampstead author of the soon to be published "The Kingdom of the Two Great Houses"

After trying a different type of tip/paw that wore out super quick, I was a bit hesitant to try again, but I am glad I did! I walk at least 6 miles 5x a week and these tips have been great. The seller sent the product quickly and I would definitely purchase them again. Hopefully not for a few months though. :)

XCD Pole - Pair by Karhu Review

XCD Pole - Pair by Karhu
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The poles aren't bad. I prefer the cork grip to the typical hard plastic on most XC ski poles.
These are very lightweight and feel good during extended tours.
That said, I snapped one of them in half the fourth time I used it. I had the carbon version of the pole and they are obviously not as durable as the aluminum version that Karhu makes.
I also had a problem with baskets coming off the first time out with them. Thankfully, I was leading the group and someone behind me alerted me to the problem. I really just needed to twist them down as tight as I could and I never had a problem with the baskets again.
I've been forced to go to a cheap Swix model for the time being, but I hope to go with the aluminum version of this pole and pray for better durability.

LEKI Nordic Walking Speed Pacer Vario T2 Poles (120cm) Review

LEKI Nordic Walking Speed Pacer Vario T2 Poles (120cm)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been Nordic walking (really hiking up and down mountains) for nearly 4 years.
I used to love these poles. They are carbon and don't vibrate like aluminum poles. And they are light.
However I continually have issues with the locking mechanism not locking. I have sent the poles back once. Leki has a lifetime guarantee. They sent out repaired poles. But I have failures again.
However... having the locking mechanism fail (will not lock at all) is terrible. Once I had to use the poles at their shortest size since I couldn't lock them. Another time I had to abandon the trip.
I have Leki traveler poles I use when traveling by air and have had no problems with them.
I have given up on these an have just ordered some SWIX fixed length carbon poles.

About LEKILEKI, the world’s leading manufacturer of ski, hiking and trekking poles, had its start in Kircheim, Germany as a hobby of its founder, Karl Lenhart, an airframe mechanic and avid skier. Lenhart believed aluminum would make a superior ski pole compared to the heavy steel models available in the late 1940’s. After successfully creating lightweight poles for his friends, in 1954, the hobby became a full time business. LEKI originated the use of nylon webbing for straps and created plastic molded grips and baskets in place of metal and leather. Additionally, Lenhart developed an aluminum tempering process that produces pole shaft with incomparable strength, durability, and reliability.
In 1984, Klaus Lenhart, Karl’s son, assumed leadership and shortly there after developed the first dual-component grip. He is also responsible for improving adjustable pole-locking technology and grip innovations such as the Trigger Click-In system and COR-TEC, a material made of real cork and latex. As the ski market continued to flourish, LEKI began manufacturing hiking poles primarily for European mountain guides. The concept of using two poles as means of relieving stress on knee joints and the lower back appealed to climbers who also saw benefits in performance and safety. LEKI poles eventually caught on with the general hiking and trekking population that recognized and appreciated the preventive health benefits as well as the climbing support and stabilizing effects. In 1990, LEKI USA was incorporated. The North American market has embraced the company’s line of alpine, Nordic, back country, mountaineering, Nordic walking, and trekking poles. Like their European counterparts who have been loyal to LEKI for nearly five decades, North American outdoor enthusiasts know and appreciate LEKI quality and value.

LEKI Peak AERGON XL Antishock (old style) Trekking Poles Review

Average Reviews:

I've been hiking for 40 years and usually have used free walking "sticks" so was a little skeptical about spending 150 bucks for store-bought. But....after using these poles on my last 4 outings (total about 50 miles of Northern California Trinity Alps Wilderness) I'm convinced they have taken 10-20% of the strain/stress off my knees and overall energy consumption on hard uphill/downhill/stream crossings. For flat walking you don't much need them but for all the other conditions they are great! Easily adjustable, lightweight, and since I've been hiking solo more, they allow me to feel more safe when hiking on difficult trail conditions. I'd reccomend them for any age hiker. The anti-shock feature really works.

Built for strength and reliability on even the most challenging terrain, LEKI's Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles allow you to tackle any adventure with confidence. Extended grips and high-performance features make the Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles a premium offering.Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles feature LEKI's Soft Antishock System (SAS) Lite that reduces stress on the joints, muscles and ligaments. The combination of internal steel spring and elastomer creates a smooth and unique suspension system that is quieter and reduces shock more effectively than other designs. LEKI places the SAS Lite system closer to the point of impact by embedding it inside the shaft of the lower pole section, keeping the spring cleaner and requiring less maintenance.Incorporating a 15-degree positive angle that preserves a natural position for your wrists, dynamic, lightweight AERGON grips have an ovoid shape that can be palmed or held traditionally. A rubberized, dimpled top offers a textured grip point and easy-adjust straps reduce stress on your wrists and provide additional security and comfort. The extended length of the Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles' grips allows you to grasp lower on the shaft, eliminating the need to shorten the length of the poles every time you encounter a steep slope or side hill traverse.LEKI's Super Lock System (SLS) uses wide thread patterns and steep-angled lock mechanisms to provide quicker and easier adjustments and is up to 60 times more secure than other locking systems. The SLS locking system is far less prone to loosening while in use, giving you peace of mind even in challenging situations. Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles employ carbide flex tips that deflect up to 30 degrees without damaging the lower pole sections. This reduces the risk of pole breakage if the pole should get caught between rocks or tree roots on the trail. Standard trekking baskets are included and are interchangeable with a simple screw on/off

These Nordic Walking poles, made by Leki, are GREAT! The poles are well-made, very light weight and well-balanced. The Nordic glove is very comfortable. The gloves are also very easy to release from the pole with Leki's quick release system. Nordic walking is a relatively new sport in the United States, but one can see people all over in Europe and the "Northern Countries" out Nordic walking. It is a great sport; my family and I have taken it up and we all love it!

Dual aluminum and carbon construction, streamlined grips and height adjustability make LEKI Instructor Nordic walking poles ideal for advanced fitness walkers. High-performance wrist straps and fitness-specific rubber walking tips equip the Instructor with the features needed for aerobic activity. Rapidly growing in popularity in the United States, Nordic walking is a fresh approach to fitness. Started by the Finnish cross-country ski team to maintain conditioning during snow-less summer months, Nordic walking burns at least 20 percent more calories than regular walking. Two specially designed poles are used in a manner that mimics cross-country skiing, swinging to match each step you take and working your upper body while you walk. Nordic walking poles have a narrower grip than traditional trekking poles and feature form-fitting wrist straps and tapered rubber tips designed specifically for fitness walking. LEKI utilizes lightweight anodized aluminum in the upper shaft of the two-section Instructor and constructs the lower shaft from ultra-light carbon. By utilizing carbon, LEKI reduces the overall swing weight of the poles to a mere 16 ounces per pair while the aluminum increases the overall durability of the poles. Nordic walking subjects your wrists to a great amount of repetitive stress. The Instructor's Energy +30 trigger straps are designed to help alleviate this issue. Completely hugging your wrist and hand, Energy +30 trigger straps provide secure support and help to absorb the shock caused by the impact of each stride. An integrated click-release enables you to fully adjust the straps and disengage them from the poles when you need your hands free. When you're ready to go again, simply pop the straps back onto the grips and you can be on your way without any need for readjusting. The foam of LEKI's AirERGO Nordic trigger grip provides a firm handhold and helps to reduce the sweat and tenderness caused by less forgiving grips. Designed to deflect up

MSR Denali III Trekking Poles Review

MSR Denali III Trekking Poles
Average Reviews:

Okay, honestly, I would have given this product a rating of 5 stars except for one little thing: you have to attach the gaskets to the poles yourself, and if you don't do it correctly, you will lose them. I thought I had attached both of these properly, but on my first snowshoe trip with them, one of the gaskets was lost in the snow. My husband & I retraced our steps, but never found the missing piece.
I haven't called to see if I can get a replacement from the company, but I don't anticipate there will a problem. If there is, I will update this review.
For the record, the poles themselves are light & of great quality & I am looking forward to many happy treks together. Also, if you're looking for snowshoes, MSR Denali are the BEST I've ever used! Our scout troop uses them, my daughter & I have red ones, and my eldest son & husband have black. Eventually our other 3 kids will have their own too.
