(More customer reviews)"Hiking the Triple Crown" is an awesome volume. If you're not familiar with any of America's three great Wilderness trails, this is a head-first dive into refreshing waters.
Even those who consider themselves pseudo-expert hikers, well-read on these thru-hikes (like myself), will find delightful insights when seeing them presented back-to-back-to-back like this. For example, many PCT- and CDT-hikers tend to refer to the Appalachian Trail as "that wussy trail back East" because of its shorter mileage, lower elevation, and the fact that you really don't need a map because of crowds and blazed markings. However, she explains that the AT is actually the most difficult of the three when it comes to frequent steep climbs and rocky footpaths. Having only hiked sections of the PCT and CDT myself, I never knew that. Ground-leveling comparisons like that (no pun intended) abound through the text.
Being one of the few people ever to have finished the whole Triple Crown, Karen brings great perspective to the nature of America's greatest trails that few can claim to have. A fantastic book for anyone interested in ANY of these trails.

Twisted Hickory Review

It will last forever and just get better as it gets older. A walking stick gives me a feeling of protection as I walk. I can defend myself against 2 and 4 legged annoyances and if I were to twist my ankle, I would not be helpless. If I could, I'd give this product ten stars.

(More customer reviews)I have owned the Tracks Lite Walking Staff for over 15 years. I have arthritis in my hands, ankles and knees. The pole is extremely light weight - 10 ounces for the 48 inch length. I can carry it without fatigue for an extended hike. The walnut knob is smooth and perfect for resting my hand on the top of the pole while descending, so I don't have to maintain a painful grip on the pole. The aircraft aluminum has been more than strong enough for any amount of weight I've put on it and shows no fatigue. The wrist strap is comfortable and works well for either supporting my weight on my wrist, or letting the pole drag loosely behind me as I crawl around rocks or trees. With the 48 inch length I have been able to strap it to the side of my backpack without interfering with walking. I am 5'6" and the 48" length works well for either ascending or descending steep trails. Taller people may wish to consider the 52" staff.
I have had two minor issues. The foam grip is not closed cell, so it retains water during those wet Northwest Washington hikes. Also, after 15 years the foam has gotten a bit stiff. The rubber foot can come off in mud or when dragging the pole. I have lost two this way. The pole functions well without the rubber foot, but tears up the trail more and is more likely to skid on rock. Replacement feet and grip are available from Cascade Designs.

I don't find either of these problems to be more than slightly annoying. The pole itself is still the best I have used. I prefer the simplicity, lightness and stability over any adjustable pole I have tried.

I got my 2 poles as a set and was free with purchase of Mountainsmith Women's Laurel Backpack. I used only one pole at a time because I wanted one hand free and often switch pole from one hand to another. Though I relied on only one pole, I never fell "yet" even in the dark (in the rain at White Oak Canyon and Ceder Run at AT, Virginia). Of course, you will need good hiking boots to balance your feet. I have mine about a year now so can't tell for long lasting quality.

Kenya, Kilimanjaro, on 4 weeks of hiking in the Andes, hiking small peaks in Scotland, and in many places in the US. They are comfortable, solid, durable poles. The grip material is easier on the hands than rubber. The grip angle is nice. Repair parts are available all over the world (though I have only replaced the tips). (More customer reviews)I've been hiking for 40 years and usually have used free walking "sticks" so was a little skeptical about spending 150 bucks for store-bought. But....after using these poles on my last 4 outings (total about 50 miles of Northern California Trinity Alps Wilderness) I'm convinced they have taken 10-20% of the strain/stress off my knees and overall energy consumption on hard uphill/downhill/stream crossings. For flat walking you don't much need them but for all the other conditions they are great! Easily adjustable, lightweight, and since I've been hiking solo more, they allow me to feel more safe when hiking on difficult trail conditions. I'd reccomend them for any age hiker. The anti-shock feature really works.

Leki Khumbu AERGON Speedlock Trekking Poles Review

We live on a beautiful farm, and I have not been able to walk around it for years and years. Our son gave me a pair of these for Christmas. I am not kidding myself, I'll never break any records, but with them I have been able to get around some areas of the farm again. As I write this, I have ordered more of these to use in the car. BTW I use them with the little shoe-like tips which seem to give me extra support.

Telescopic Walking Stick Review

(More customer reviews)I prefer wooden walking staffs, but wanted something that I could fit into luggage while traveling. I took a chance on the length of this one, which isn't specified. By my own unofficial measurement, it's just a little under 26 inches fully collapsed, which will fit into a large suitcase (diagonally) or a long duffel. So that's okay for me. Don't know what the story is for bringing it in an airplane cabin as a loose item, like a cane.
As for quality, you don't get what you don't pay for. I prefer that phrasing, since you don't always get what you do pay for. Other people have commented on the compass. It's basically a non-functional decoration, not even consistent enough to apply an offset, but that's a non-issue for me. The important thing is the construction of the stick, and that seems solid enough. I pulled the bottom section out entirely to look at the locking mechanism. It's a sort of plastic expanding wedge which may or may not be reliable in the long run. Don't under-tighten it, but I'd be careful about over-tightening it too. The instructions warn not to rely on the staff to support your full weight, but it does seem pretty strong. The shock absorbing mechanism is stiff enough not to be a distraction during normal walking.
If you're going to do serious wilderness hiking, then invest some more money in a higher quality pole. If you're going to navigate by compass, then spend the money to buy a good compass. For casual walking and hiking, though, I think this is a pretty good deal, and I'm satisfied.
UPDATE on the compass. I thought it was better to have no compass than one which was totally non-functional, so I pried it out of the handle. There was a little glue holding it in, but not much. Then I noticed that it seemed to be working properly. Checked it against a better compass, and the two agreed with each other. Popped it back in the handle, and it wouldn't work again. Took it out, it worked as well as you can expect for a cheap little micro compass. So something in the handle is slightly magnetized, or there's just too much metal around it. I'll leave it in, friction from the rubber handle should hold it in there, and just remember that I'd need to take it out to use it! Not what was intended, I'm sure.

Crescent Moon Trekking Poles Review

(More customer reviews)These poles arrived very quickly and were as advertised. I have used trek poles for years in doing archaeology in the Flint Hills and I wanted poles to use for urban walks on concrete and asphalt. I got these poles because they were advertised as "shock absorbing". Maybe I should have done a little more research. Shock absorbing can barely be felt with the poles, which I have not tried out in the field yet. So the 3 star rating is less the capability of the poles as the description being less than I felt would have told me that when we talk about absorbing shock, we are talking about a "give" of 1.0 to 1.5 cm. These poles are a little heavier than my old ones so I'm not sure what my arms will feel like after a day in the field with them. I am sure they will give me the same service in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma that my old ones have done. For anyone who has not used trekking poles before, be sure and do your homework.

(More customer reviews)Very handy for keeping poles in the house, and the strap lengthens for wear across the body to more evenly distribute the weight if you get tired of using your poles on long walks, and don't have a daypack with pole holders. You have to break poles down though, or shorten them to use it, so it is not for quick use.
