Surviving Cold Weather: Simply Survival (Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness) Review

Surviving Cold Weather: Simply Survival (Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The best part about this survival guide is Davenport's descriptions of "improvised" items. Most people don't plan to be in a survival situation in freezing temperatures, and may not have the proper equipment. He teaches you how to use survival items you have purchased and may have with you (such as an avalanche beacon or a signal flare), but also what to do in a situtation in which you don't have what you need (improvising snowshoes, stick and shadow compass, etc). The section on constructing emergency shelters gave detailed instructions for many options depending on what resources are available - trees, ice, and/or deep snow. He even provides pictures as proof of his methods. The information on how to obtain food, especially berries, and how to navigate without a map or compass was also extremely helpful. The only disappointing thing for me in this book was the information on animals. Many of the descriptions seemed cut-and-pasted, with really no specific tips on how to avoid polar bear attacks versus brown bears versus pumas.
I bought this book because I live in Alaska and was hoping to learn something that would keep me from becoming one of the many people that do not survive in the wilderness out here because they are unprepared! I bring it with me when I go backpacking or camping, because you never know. I recommend reading this book if you spend time outdoors in cold weather, whether you put yourself in risky situations or not. You'll learn not only how to be prepared but how to stay alive if you are lost or find yourself without adequate transportation, food, or shelter.

Great book! I just "discovered" Nordic Walking! This book makes the sport easy and fun for those wanting to get involved. I bought poles for my family, and even my eight year old son is having fun. Nordic walking exercises so much more of the body than simple walking or light jogging. Highly recommend!

Nordic WalkingThe Complete Guide to Health, Fitness, and FunA primer to one of Europe’s hottest fitness activities, this is the first major book about this easy, fun, and effective new sportNordic Walking, a type of fitness walking with poles, was developed in Finland in 1997 and spread across much of Europe. Today more than 6 million people worldwide engage in Nordic Walking regularly, and participation is growing fastest in the United States. The 87.5 million Americans who already walk for fitness have been coming to Nordic Walking in droves. The motion is similar to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing but without skis, snowshoes, or snow–and akin to the Nordic-Track, Crosswalk Treadmill, and other apparatus but done outdoors in the fresh air and scenery. Easy to learn and easy on the budget, Nordic Walking can be done anywhere and has many advantages over regular walking, including:• The specially designed, lightweight poles relieve some of the stress on the ankles, knees and hips and transfer it to the upper torso, making it a full-body workout.• Nordic Walking burns up to 45 percent more calories than walking without poles. It is equally effective for new exercisers just off the couch, dedicated walkers, long-time runners who are now trying to favor their knees, anyone rehabilitating from an injury, and even too-sedentary seniors. Nordic Walking is a recreational and fitness activity for the 21st century–and Nordic Walking the first complete guide to how to get started with this fun and healthy new sport.

For a $5 pedometer is a great deal. It's easy to setup and the sensitivity adjustment works well. It takes a couple of try-and-error to get the right sensitivity, otherwise will not record your steps or record every movement, but in the end is accurate enough (I would say 2-3% error on step count).

Telescopic Walking Stick Review

Telescopic Walking Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I prefer wooden walking staffs, but wanted something that I could fit into luggage while traveling. I took a chance on the length of this one, which isn't specified. By my own unofficial measurement, it's just a little under 26 inches fully collapsed, which will fit into a large suitcase (diagonally) or a long duffel. So that's okay for me. Don't know what the story is for bringing it in an airplane cabin as a loose item, like a cane.
As for quality, you don't get what you don't pay for. I prefer that phrasing, since you don't always get what you do pay for. Other people have commented on the compass. It's basically a non-functional decoration, not even consistent enough to apply an offset, but that's a non-issue for me. The important thing is the construction of the stick, and that seems solid enough. I pulled the bottom section out entirely to look at the locking mechanism. It's a sort of plastic expanding wedge which may or may not be reliable in the long run. Don't under-tighten it, but I'd be careful about over-tightening it too. The instructions warn not to rely on the staff to support your full weight, but it does seem pretty strong. The shock absorbing mechanism is stiff enough not to be a distraction during normal walking.
If you're going to do serious wilderness hiking, then invest some more money in a higher quality pole. If you're going to navigate by compass, then spend the money to buy a good compass. For casual walking and hiking, though, I think this is a pretty good deal, and I'm satisfied.
UPDATE on the compass. I thought it was better to have no compass than one which was totally non-functional, so I pried it out of the handle. There was a little glue holding it in, but not much. Then I noticed that it seemed to be working properly. Checked it against a better compass, and the two agreed with each other. Popped it back in the handle, and it wouldn't work again. Took it out, it worked as well as you can expect for a cheap little micro compass. So something in the handle is slightly magnetized, or there's just too much metal around it. I'll leave it in, friction from the rubber handle should hold it in there, and just remember that I'd need to take it out to use it! Not what was intended, I'm sure.

This is a very nice stick. I am only 5'1" tall and could get one to fit me. There is a very nice floral design, cut into it.. nice and simple. The top of the stick is smooth so it is easy to rest against it. The leather handle is just about the right length to use to prevent grip problems. I haven't had to use the metal point on the end but I am glad to know it is there. The rubber tip has not budged at all.

As an old lady with a balance problem, I needed a hiker's pal, but not a cane. This lightweight, very sturdy, inexpensive walking pole just does the trick. I took it right out for a test-run and felt very confident. The stick is nicely made, with a hand-carved thistle on it yet! Even if you're not Scottish, you'll love this stick, trust me, and your pocket book will feel highly gratified, too!
P.S. I noticed when reviewing walking sticks on Amazon that many customers mentioned that their stick choice would make a good weapon against muggers! What a world we live in! But I daresay my stick would be quite useful in that respect, certainly superior to an old lady's purse!

They do what they are supposed to do and weight next to nothing. I have put these poles through the paces and they shine. Easily take all my weight with a pack, so 270 lbs total or so, up or down hill. A couple of times I've had them wedge real bad into rocks and put some serious torque across them and they have held up great. Cork handles are wonderful, as are the lower foam grips for uphill. A couple of dings here and there and still no problems. I wouldn't say you could purposely abuse them without fear of breaking, but they are easily as tough as any aluminum pole I've ever used.
