this is an excellent basketball hoop.
positive attributes
There is very little vibration after shooting on this basket
Easily adjustable
built to last.
Good clearance between the rim and the pole
negative attributes
this needs a 20 inch diameter hole over 72 inches deep
be prepared for it least the day a work if you're going to install this yourself
I'm 6'9" 270 pounds and I wanted a basket that I could dunk on and not have to worry about damaging it. This basket is made of excellent materials and is very heavy duty and so far has performed well.

Spalding In-Ground Basketball System with Glass Backboard, 60 x 34-Inch Review

Wanted to leave a review praising this system and commented on other review.
I agree with you. The instructions are terrible. However the goal is the best in the mid-range price.
The new systems like this one has a two piece pole. The bottom pole is straight with no holes and the top pole has holes and is beveled to go over the bottom. The bevel is about 4 or 5" deep so that's how far the bottom must go in. Mark the bottom pole about 5" down and then bang the top pole on by bouncing on a solid surface till it goes down to the mark or close. I would not have stopped after 2". If it just won't go, I would call Spalding for a new pole. They are good about sending out parts, fast too-800-558-5234. A one piece pole would be best but would require all shipping to be done via truck not UPS so more expensive plus, would it have fit in your minivan?
The PLASTIC ground sleeve should not be used unless you plan on moving soon. It is plastic and allows too much wobble. Goals should be as sturdy as possible not removable.
The pole should go directly into the cement about 14" or to the top of sleeve if you insist on using that. Level the pole at the top because that segment will hold the backboard. Face in the direction you want it to face and let dry for 3 sunny days.
Day2 is easier done with a ladder not by removing the pole. Simply carry an arm up the ladder and bolt. Carry the second with plates and bolt. Attach the crank thingy. With helper, attach the backboard. Attach the rim and tighten all bolts. Find 10', mark crank thingy, apply sticker. Doing the Day2 from the back of a pickup is easiest and a 1 man job.
Now is when you want to add concrete to the pole. Mix another bag a bit wetter than usual so it will pour from a bucket down the pole. Do this slowly to not make a mess. Also, tape the joint on the pole because some cement will leak out there and it stains the pole and won't come off. Let it dry for two days and remove tape.
The instructions are bad, written by lawyers i'm sure. Read them to get the idea and also use them for all the details of bolts and washers but do the rest my way.
Instructions Here:
[...]
*Notice STEP 1 talks about identifying the pole sections (now only two sections). STEP 8 on page 11 shows how to put poles together and has a warning stating "Pole sections should have a 4 ½" (11.4 cm) minimum overlap."

Designed to install in a driveway or other static environment, this Spalding in-ground basketball system will turn your home into a jump-shooting haven. The system starts with a 60-inch-wide, 1/4-inch-thick tempered glass backboard with a heavy-duty steel frame. The board offers the same action as pro backboards, helping you shoot layups and bank shots with confidence. The solid-steel Pro Image rim, meanwhile, supports aggressive play--a must for modern hoops. And hops-challenged players will love the hoop's U-Turn lift system, which includes a removable crank that lets you adjust the height from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments. Other features include a two-piece, 4-inch square pole that provides less "wobble" than round poles; a full 2 feet of clearance between the pole and backboard; professional-looking aluminum trim around the backboard frame; and powder-coated steel parts to resist rust.

This is a great product, and as usual, Amazon shipped it direct with lightning speed right to my door. It was the best value, as we comparison shopped, did not need to pay for delivery or taxes, and knew if we were not happy, we could return the system with no problem. I must add that Amazon states that you need professional installation. They are 100% correct. Other sport stores told us that it would be simple to install, with very little effort, and I did make the mistake of believing those salepeople. It took us hours and hours with the help of many people to finally get it right, since the directions are not very accurate. We had to keep on taking steps backwards and repeating and correcting. It was a nightmare. We should have heeded the warning of Amazon to get professional installation. Unless you are extremely mechanical and have a second and third person to help you, do get someone experienced to assemble this item.
Now that it is up and functional, we absolutely love it. It is very attractive looking, sturdy, and portable. Again, great product!!

The Lifetime 71523 Portable Basketball Goal System features a clear 54 inch square Shatter Guard backboard system made of Makrolon polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and many times stronger than acrylic. The gray hammertone steel, three piece, 3.5-inch round pole with Power Lift height mechanism offers instant and effortless height adjustment from 7.5 feet to 10 feet with infinite increments. The orange Slam-It Pro rim features double compression springs that provides spring-back action, and an arena-style wraparound brace with a 0.625-inch ring of solid steel and rigid rectangular extension arms offers more play space under the basket. This system also includes a spring cover, bellows, blow molded frame pad and a black pole pad. The extra large portable base with 35-gallon capacity fills with water or sand to provide a stable foundation that rolls easily on its own wheels.
Portable basketball systems depend on a base filled with sand or water for stability. Although it will take up more space than an in-ground system, the portable base rolls on wheels, allowing players to position the basketball system in the desired location (and also allowing storage in a garage). Simply assemble, fill the base and play today. There is no fussing with concrete.

Amazon.com Basketball System Buying Guide With the high-quality construction of many portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as hooking up your garden hose. But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide.
In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease.
Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system.
Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list.
Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage.
Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action.
The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board.

When you shoot a basketball at this unit, it has the sound of a high quality system that is well designed. It handles shots from every angle well and we are generally happy with this product. I do have some fair criticisms of Lifetime, but that did not keep me from giving this basketball hoop system a five star. It is really a very very good system and we would buy it again even with the assembly hiccups we had.
We bought this at local toy store for about $[...] less (on sale and with a special 20% off coupon). The regular price there is 199.
On this model you need to plan on about 3-4 hours of assembly time if you are not a real whiz at these sort of things. Some less apt individuals may not want to try this. Make sure you have two 3/4" wrenches, two 1/2" wrenches, and two of any other sizes required (I think we needed 9/16" for one step). I found it easier to use one wrench and the matching deep well socket (there was one piece that I could not get without a deep well socket-I didn't have the size socket in my tool kit-so I ran out to a local hardware store and picked up a 9 piece deep well socket set for $9.99). I needed the sockets anyhow, so I didn't mind. The instructions don't tell you that, but you do need double wrenches or the sockets and you do need at least one deep well socket to do this job, and the manual missed that as well. The instructions say you need two adults at the end, but my nine year old son was enough to help me lift it into place. It might be too hard for someone with less strength (I'm just average in lifting power).
I had the feeling that the manual was generally well thought out and written by people who have seen almost every error you can imagine. Still I had trouble keeping on top of all the details in the manual and had some trouble visualizing the steps. As far as manuals go, it was better than most for these type of projects, and there is a pdf copy on their website that is very easy to find and download. Nice job Lifetime on the website design. I liked that a lot.
It would be GREAT if Lifetime would offer video clips for each step on their website. Then you could put your laptop next to the assembly area and watch the clip for the step you are on until you really grasp it.
On the customer service, I have to give any company that sells recreational products or things that men generally assemble at home when they are not at work (evenings), a C at best if they are only open during banking hours. Lifetime's customer service is open LESS than my local bank! They close at 5pm MST. So I was unable to reach them when I had a question. Fortunately I figured out the issue on my own. But they get a C minus for not being available when most of their customers are likely to be assembling these units. What are they thinking about? Only their staff?
The net is shorter than most nets and so they want you to order nets from them. I'm not sure that is necessary. The original net seems to be of a high quality. My sons initial reaction was that his new basketball hoop was better than all his friends. He was very excited to have this, and honestly I really loved the feel of this unit. It feels like a very high quality piece and we only paid $[...] total for the whole thing!
One of the pics in the manual shows a foam wrap around the lower pole, but that did not come with the unit. Neither did a sticker to show raising and lowering of the height.
We give this unit a five star. I believe it will last for many years based on the quality of materials. It has a five year warranty and I would guess that I won't have any parts break in five years. This seems like a great deal to me.
The quality on the pieces (nuts/bolts) is high enough that everything fits together as they say in the manual. The materials and backboard are of a high quality and the entire assembly is slick in my opinion. We are very happy with this unit.
One addendum to this review. We recently had a 60 mph windstorm knock this unit over onto our driveway. It was not damaged by the slamming onto our concrete drive and was easy to return to it's correct position. However, you might lay this on its side when storms come.
With lots of wind in Illinois, we found that to keep this from tipping over you must fill the base with water & put two 70 pound bags of sand on the base. Then you have enough weight on it to hold it up in just about any storm.

Mammoth 98874 In-Ground Basketball System with 72-Inch Backboard Review

Mammoth 98874 In-Ground Basketball System with 72-Inch Backboard
Average Reviews:

I love the Mammoth Basketball Hoop! It feels like an NBA quality system. We chose it because of the 72" tempered glass backboard which is the same as used in gymnasiums. It has an extremely solid 6" x 6" pole that makes it very stable. It feels like you are playing in a nice gym. It also adjusts very easily with the horse shoe styled grip that you squeeze. This makes it really fun for dunk ball. This is an awesome unit, that makes you glad that you spent your money on something that will last. It also has nice bolt down anchoring system that allows you to move it if you change houses. Great buy!

Hone your jumpshot in your spare moments or perform a backyard dunking drill with the Mammoth 98874 in-ground basketball goal. Designed for permanent installations, the 98874 includes such features as a real tempered glass backboard, a heavy-duty Spring Flex rim, and a Rapid Cam one-handed height adjustment mechanism for speedy height changes.
The goal's sturdiness stems from its 6-inch-square steel pole and its 9-by-9-inch bolt-down pattern, which is more rigid and takes up less space than portable basketball goals. The pro-style 72-inch backboard, meanwhile, is made of 3/8-inch-thick tempered glass, the same kind used in high school, college, and pro programs across the country. As a result, broken backboards are a thing of the past, even from errant rocks and other non-basketball threats. In addition, the board includes a huge steel frame and a professional-quality foam frame pad.
Mammoth knows that dunking and above-the-rim play are a huge part of modern basketball, which is why the 98874 also comes with both a height adjustment mechanism and a spring-back rim. The Rapid Cam mechanism--the fastest crank mechanism on the market--adjusts from 7-1/2 to 10 feet in seconds, with a Key Lock device to ensure that the rim stays at your chosen height while you play. Thanks to the Rapid Cam technology, players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the game on their own terms, while aspiring dunkers can gradually raise the level an inch at a time as their vertical improves.
The Spring Flex rim, meanwhile, is designed specifically for players who like to throw down. The 5/8-inch solid-steel rim features wraparound bracing and double-compression springs that give way during dunks to protect the player, then spring back once released. The rim is also supported by 1/2-inch braces, with welded-steel net hooks and an all-weather nylon net.
Other details include a monstrous, powder-coated black steel frame with a rust-resistant finish, 30-inch extension arms for durability, an anchoring system with a patented anti-flex design that reduces vibration, and a precision leveling feature. The 98874 carries a lifetime warranty.

Goalrilla GLR GS 54 Basketball System Review

Goalrilla GLR GS 54 Basketball System
Average Reviews:

We were looking at purchasing a Goalrilla basketball system for a few years now. The newer GS54 seems to be of the same quality as the older models and though it's a little cheaper than the old series it feels rock solid. Either way, we finally decided to pull the trigger and get it in place for a recent party. Assembly is pretty easy but the instructions are a little off on the amount of concrete it says is needed. We went through 12 x 80lb bags of Quickrete and we dug our hold according to specs so word of advice buy extra concrete. Two more bags should not cost you more than an additional $10 so save yourself some hassle. I had 10 bags mixed (2 at a time) and poured them into the hole before finding out I needed two more!!! Good thing is I am minutes away from Home Depot. Outside of that I managed to get the pole up myself and bolted and to get the rim up I backed my pickup up to the post and hefted the backboard onto the mounting arm while my wife put the bolts on. You'll probably be better off with 2-3 people to help with that step but I had to try it myself. Final result is an absolutely great basketball system that plays like a professional system!

Players insist on Goalrilla because it's still made according to the belief that they deserve the best performing system we can make. It's why we insist on welded construction rather than screws or bolts. It's why we make pole in one piece and protect them with tough powder coating. It's why corrosion-resistant zinc hardware is standard. It all adds up to this: Goalrilla stands alone for unmatched quality, exceptional durability, and unrivaled playability.

This Basketball System is fantastic. It is really easy to change the hoop settings from 7.5 to 10 feet. It did take 5 hours to put together (including using 400 lbs of fine sand in the base). It is impossible to put together w/o at least some help and there were a few moments of head shaking at the directions but overall a relatively easy process.

Hone your jumpshot in your spare moments or perform a backyard dunking drill with this Lifetime portable basketball system. Unlike in-ground basketball hoops--which are typically anchored in concrete--the portable hoop rolls on wheels, letting you position the basket support in any desired location, from the back patio to the middle of the cul-de-sac. All you have to do is fill the polyethylene base with water or sand and play.

Other features include fade-resistant graphics screen-printed onto the backboard with UV-resistant inks and a powder-coated, rust-resistant finish around the pole. The hoop carries a five-year warranty that covers everything on the system.

Spalding 72307PR Portable Basketball System with 52-Inch Acrylic Backboard
Average Reviews:

The goal and pole material is excellent. I find that the backboard however needs a little more support in the back because hitting the ball against certain places causes the entire backboard to reverberate and the ball to not react properly. Other than that it's an excellent backyard goal. UPDATE - 7/3 - THE Adjustable goal keeps slamming down whenever you hit the rim hard, pretty dangerouse if you ask me!

Spalding 72354 Portable Basketball System with 48-Inch PolyCarbonate Backboard Review

Spalding 72354 Portable Basketball System with 48-Inch PolyCarbonate Backboard
Average Reviews:

I was a little disappointed, the backboard is pretty thin and the support bars that go from the pole to the plastic base and the screw-holes in the base themselves seem like they could easily break with time. I only paid $179 through Amazon directly, with no shipping charge . . . so for that price, I feel it was a good enough deal. If my son continues to play bball, I will upgrade to a much more study setup.
As for the directions, they were slightly confusing. It took me longer than most to put together, I did it all myself with no help (as a single mom), EXCEPT for when I attached the backboard, THAT step does take two people!

Silverback SB-54iG In-Ground Basketball System with 54-Inch Tempered Glass Backboard Review

Silverback SB-54iG In-Ground Basketball System with 54-Inch Tempered Glass Backboard

For this price with free shipping, this is a pretty good system for basic driveway fun with the kids. If you want a super sturdy system, you'll have to spend a lot more than $500. There is certainly some vibration but for an entry-level in-ground driveway system with a glass backboard the action seems OK. Installation takes some work but it is pretty straightforward - the instructions are clear and the parts are clearly labeled. It is a good looking hoop and the height adjustment is smooth. Note: This appears to be essentially the same as the Goaliath GB54iG, also from Escalade Sports (manuals are online and are exactly the same). You can find reviews for that system at [...] and the Dicks web site.

Lifetime 1269 Pro Court Portable Basketball System with 44" Acrylic Fusion Backboard Review

Lifetime 1269 Pro Court Portable Basketball System with 44 Acrylic Fusion Backboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This basketball goal and base by Lifetime is economical, relatively simple to put together, and pretty sturdy. The instructions are easy to follow, and no drilling or special tools are required. Because of possible liability concerns, safety is stressed. Although at a couple of steps, it states that two adults are required to complete the task, one adult with moderate strength and weight, exercising care, can safety get the job done. I put it together by myself, however if another person is available, it would certainly be advisable to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
The hollow plastic base can be filled with either water or sand to provide the required counterweight to support the pole and rim. It will cost more, but I recommend using sand rather than water, especially if you live in a cold weather area. The instructions state that 319 pounds of sand are required. Not sure about that, but it probably takes between 3 and 4 cubic feet of sand to fill the base.
The base has a pair of small plastic wheels that help you to move or position it. Once in place, you fill up the base to about half capacity, raise the goal upright, and then fill the base to capacity. Unless you are capable of moving a football blocking sled, don't' plan on moving the system very far, after it is filled. The pole and backboard will bend back and wobble during normal play. This is to be expected, as the system will not be as rigid as a regulation goal. The plastic backboard is smaller than regulation, so your angles for bank shots are tighter, but at least it is rectangular rather than rounded at the top. If you can dunk, take it easy or you could take the hoop down. The rim is black rather than orange. The net is low quality, and does not slow the ball down after a goal.
Although the system is pretty sturdy, long term life is an open question. There are exposed bolts and metallic parts, and the top of the pole is open, so if exposed to rain, corrosion is inevitable. The rim height is adjustable in six inch increments from 7.5 to 10 feet. Once you set the rim height, painting any unfinished metal parts might be a good idea.
Overall, this is a very good product for the price, especially if you get it on sale with Super Saver shipping. Hopefully it will hold up well under the elements. So far, I am loving it! My shot is improving, and I am also saving gas because I don't have to drive to the neighborhood park.

Lifetime 1558 XL Base Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with Clear 52-Inch Square Shatter Guard Backboard Review

Lifetime 1558 XL Base Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with Clear 52-Inch Square Shatter Guard Backboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent Basketball goal, at a very fair price. Once completed, you have an attractive basketball goal that looks like it means business...and it does. The goal's design is fairly heavy duty, and holds up well to fully grown people hanging briefly from the rim, along with the other expected abuses a hoops goal goes through. It adjusts easily, and is well-balanced, so that two people can relocate the goal without trouble. Filled with 407 pounds of sand (use DRY sand to speed this cumbersome process), the thing stays put once positioned, also. All-in-all, the finished product is very satisfactory, and I expect it to provide many years of healthy fun for my family.
Now for the headaches: Amazon says the goal will be shipped in its original packaging. The packaging is simply not up to the job, and my friendly Fed-Ex delivery person said that items of this size and weight that aren't given extra packaging rarely make it to their destination intact. In my case, the box had split open, and spilled several of the pipes comprising the pole, along with several of the hardware packets. (I notice from the other reviews that missing hardware is a frequesnt complaint.) Luckilly, my Fedex guy was able to gather the spilled parts, and nothing was lost or damaged. While Lifetime offers a toll-free number to obtain missing parts, it would be frustrating to have to wait for an essential part once assembly had commenced.
The other headache was the assembly instructions. Clarity was sacrificed in order to make the instructions as short as possible. Many steps could have been broken down into several sections, and illustrated in more detail. There was no complete parts list, and some of the pictures of parts were inaccurate or mislabled. There also seemed to be no order to the way the hardware was packaged. I consider myself very handy, but I was frustrated with these instructions, and ended up improvising a lot of the assembly. Consider the assembly a MAJOR PROJECT with poor instructions from Lifetime.
In the end, I am quite pleased with my new basketball goal and would reccommend it to others as long as one is aware of the potential headaches associated with shipping and assembly. The price is right, the free shipping very convenient, and the finished product looks GREAT, and plays well.

Two years later, and the system is still in excellent shape. It's been played hard, been exposed to extremes in temperature and weather for two years, and hasn't deteriorated in any noticeable way. I'd say this makes it an even better buy.

Hone your jumpshot in your spare moments or perform a backyard dunking drill with this Lifetime Shatter Guard XL portable basketball system. Unlike in-ground basketball hoops--which are typically anchored in concrete--this portable system rolls on wheels, letting you position the basket support in any desired location, from the back patio to the middle of the cul-de-sac. All you have to do is fill the heavy-duty 35-gallon base with water or sand and play.
The basketball system comes with a 52-inch-square Shatter Guard backboard made of Makrolon polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and several times stronger than acrylic. When combined with the heavy-duty steel frame and the sturdy steel Y-extension arms, the basketball goal looks and plays just like pro-style glass, with superior rebound effects and terrific stability. The system also includes a three-piece, 3.5-inch round pole with Lifetime's patented pneumatic Power Lift mechanism. To change the pole's height--it adjusts from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments--simply activate the Power Lift with one hand and push it to the correct height. And Lifetime knows that dunking and above-the-rim play are a huge part of modern basketball, which is why the basketball goal includes a Slam-It rim. The solid-steel rim features double-compression springs that give way during dunks to protect the player, then spring back once released.
Other features include welded-steel net hooks with an all-weather nylon net; fade-resistant graphics that are screen-printed with UV-protected inks for superior color endurance; and a five-year warranty that covers everything on the system.

I thought this would be a stronger hoop than the fisher price ones, but I was wrong. The backboard is made of really thin cheap plastic that cracks very easily. The pump to blow up the basketball is also cheaply made and broke after a couple of uses. The small basketball that came with this set also needed air every day. I purchased this for my 3 year old and it only lasted one month.
