This is a great product, and as usual, Amazon shipped it direct with lightning speed right to my door. It was the best value, as we comparison shopped, did not need to pay for delivery or taxes, and knew if we were not happy, we could return the system with no problem. I must add that Amazon states that you need professional installation. They are 100% correct. Other sport stores told us that it would be simple to install, with very little effort, and I did make the mistake of believing those salepeople. It took us hours and hours with the help of many people to finally get it right, since the directions are not very accurate. We had to keep on taking steps backwards and repeating and correcting. It was a nightmare. We should have heeded the warning of Amazon to get professional installation. Unless you are extremely mechanical and have a second and third person to help you, do get someone experienced to assemble this item.
Now that it is up and functional, we absolutely love it. It is very attractive looking, sturdy, and portable. Again, great product!!

The Lifetime 71523 Portable Basketball Goal System features a clear 54 inch square Shatter Guard backboard system made of Makrolon polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and many times stronger than acrylic. The gray hammertone steel, three piece, 3.5-inch round pole with Power Lift height mechanism offers instant and effortless height adjustment from 7.5 feet to 10 feet with infinite increments. The orange Slam-It Pro rim features double compression springs that provides spring-back action, and an arena-style wraparound brace with a 0.625-inch ring of solid steel and rigid rectangular extension arms offers more play space under the basket. This system also includes a spring cover, bellows, blow molded frame pad and a black pole pad. The extra large portable base with 35-gallon capacity fills with water or sand to provide a stable foundation that rolls easily on its own wheels.
Portable basketball systems depend on a base filled with sand or water for stability. Although it will take up more space than an in-ground system, the portable base rolls on wheels, allowing players to position the basketball system in the desired location (and also allowing storage in a garage). Simply assemble, fill the base and play today. There is no fussing with concrete.

Amazon.com Basketball System Buying Guide With the high-quality construction of many portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as hooking up your garden hose. But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide.
In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease.
Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system.
Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list.
Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage.
Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action.
The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board.

Very sturdy assembly and full size hoop. So far its been a lot of fun. I only wish they provided a drain plug for the base. You can still drain by removing the two top filler caps and tipping it to the side though.

This is a heavy duty mount. There are more expensive mounts. Save your money. This one is all you will need. It is easy to adjust. Be sure to have your thinking cap on and some help when you start. I would mount the backboard to the mounting bracket first ,and elevate the whole thing if you have a way to raise it. (I used the wall mount)

I was a little disappointed, the backboard is pretty thin and the support bars that go from the pole to the plastic base and the screw-holes in the base themselves seem like they could easily break with time. I only paid $179 through Amazon directly, with no shipping charge . . . so for that price, I feel it was a good enough deal. If my son continues to play bball, I will upgrade to a much more study setup.
As for the directions, they were slightly confusing. It took me longer than most to put together, I did it all myself with no help (as a single mom), EXCEPT for when I attached the backboard, THAT step does take two people!

I had high expectations for this backboard considering it was the one recommended by Spaulding since they did not have anything in stock for me to purchase direct. Amazon did a great job in getting it to us propmtly, and for free. As soon as I took it out of the box I knew this wouldn't last too long. It was fairly simple to replace the old broken backboard with this new one, a few bolts here and there. The problem is how cheap the "polycarbonate" backboard is. Topping in at a measly 1/8" thick board, I felt as if it should have said "Buyer Beware" on it. It has no reaction when a ball is shot against it rather all you hear is a resounding "THUD" and the ball falls straight down. The frame is cheaply made and has severe wobble to it when a shot is made. Even with 200 lbs of water in the base and the goal squatting at 8 foot, it has way too much movement. I suppose it will be fine for my 8 and 5 year old but I'm sure glad I didn't have a 3 on 3 tourney scheduled with the guys after receiving this.

It's a great product to play on when it's finally assembled but that wasn't as easy as it should have been. Some of the parts that were suppossed to be pre assembled were not and they were not included in the box. I called Spalding and the customer service was friendly but not very helpful. They said that they would ship the parts but after a week I called back and they told me they didn't ship anything because they were all out of the bolts I needed. They told me it would take a month to get the bolts from headquarters and another couple of weeks to mail it to me. I asked for the specs of the bolts and went to Lowes where I paid about $4 for all the materials. I'm glad I called back because it appeared they just dropped the issue when they realized they didn't have the parts.

Lifetime 1558 XL Base Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with Clear 52-Inch Square Shatter Guard Backboard Review

Lifetime 1558 XL Base Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with Clear 52-Inch Square Shatter Guard Backboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent Basketball goal, at a very fair price. Once completed, you have an attractive basketball goal that looks like it means business...and it does. The goal's design is fairly heavy duty, and holds up well to fully grown people hanging briefly from the rim, along with the other expected abuses a hoops goal goes through. It adjusts easily, and is well-balanced, so that two people can relocate the goal without trouble. Filled with 407 pounds of sand (use DRY sand to speed this cumbersome process), the thing stays put once positioned, also. All-in-all, the finished product is very satisfactory, and I expect it to provide many years of healthy fun for my family.
Now for the headaches: Amazon says the goal will be shipped in its original packaging. The packaging is simply not up to the job, and my friendly Fed-Ex delivery person said that items of this size and weight that aren't given extra packaging rarely make it to their destination intact. In my case, the box had split open, and spilled several of the pipes comprising the pole, along with several of the hardware packets. (I notice from the other reviews that missing hardware is a frequesnt complaint.) Luckilly, my Fedex guy was able to gather the spilled parts, and nothing was lost or damaged. While Lifetime offers a toll-free number to obtain missing parts, it would be frustrating to have to wait for an essential part once assembly had commenced.
The other headache was the assembly instructions. Clarity was sacrificed in order to make the instructions as short as possible. Many steps could have been broken down into several sections, and illustrated in more detail. There was no complete parts list, and some of the pictures of parts were inaccurate or mislabled. There also seemed to be no order to the way the hardware was packaged. I consider myself very handy, but I was frustrated with these instructions, and ended up improvising a lot of the assembly. Consider the assembly a MAJOR PROJECT with poor instructions from Lifetime.
In the end, I am quite pleased with my new basketball goal and would reccommend it to others as long as one is aware of the potential headaches associated with shipping and assembly. The price is right, the free shipping very convenient, and the finished product looks GREAT, and plays well.
6-23-2010:
Two years later, and the system is still in excellent shape. It's been played hard, been exposed to extremes in temperature and weather for two years, and hasn't deteriorated in any noticeable way. I'd say this makes it an even better buy.

Hone your jumpshot in your spare moments or perform a backyard dunking drill with this Lifetime Shatter Guard XL portable basketball system. Unlike in-ground basketball hoops--which are typically anchored in concrete--this portable system rolls on wheels, letting you position the basket support in any desired location, from the back patio to the middle of the cul-de-sac. All you have to do is fill the heavy-duty 35-gallon base with water or sand and play.
The basketball system comes with a 52-inch-square Shatter Guard backboard made of Makrolon polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and several times stronger than acrylic. When combined with the heavy-duty steel frame and the sturdy steel Y-extension arms, the basketball goal looks and plays just like pro-style glass, with superior rebound effects and terrific stability. The system also includes a three-piece, 3.5-inch round pole with Lifetime's patented pneumatic Power Lift mechanism. To change the pole's height--it adjusts from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments--simply activate the Power Lift with one hand and push it to the correct height. And Lifetime knows that dunking and above-the-rim play are a huge part of modern basketball, which is why the basketball goal includes a Slam-It rim. The solid-steel rim features double-compression springs that give way during dunks to protect the player, then spring back once released.
Other features include welded-steel net hooks with an all-weather nylon net; fade-resistant graphics that are screen-printed with UV-protected inks for superior color endurance; and a five-year warranty that covers everything on the system.

Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, as you won't need to dedicate any space to the base or pole.

Huffy Sports Youth NBA Portable Basketball System with 32-inch EcoComposite Fan Backboard Review

I thought this would be a stronger hoop than the fisher price ones, but I was wrong. The backboard is made of really thin cheap plastic that cracks very easily. The pump to blow up the basketball is also cheaply made and broke after a couple of uses. The small basketball that came with this set also needed air every day. I purchased this for my 3 year old and it only lasted one month.

Introduce your kids to basketball at a young age with the Spalding Youth portable basketball system, which features an easily adjustable telescoping backboard that can be set 4.5 to 6 feet in height. It's a great choice for use with a size 3 junior basketball, and it can be used both indoors and outdoors. The three-piece, 2-inch diameter pole system assembles and breaks down quickly, and the base is stabilized with either sand or water (and includes a built-in holder for the ball). It's matched with a 32-inch fan-shaped Eco-Composite backboard (made from recycled materials) and 14-inch solid steel rim.

I bought this for my son who is 11. he is shooting hoops all the time now and our neighbor kids are playing too. I was a little sceptical since no other backboard combos had been reviewed but so far I am very happy with it. it has been a week. it's good exercise and nice to have it stable on the garage instead of the portable type.

Lifetime 71526 Competition Square Shatter Guard Basketball 54-Inch Backboard and Slam-It Pro Rim Review

Lifetime 71526 Competition Square Shatter Guard Basketball 54-Inch Backboard and Slam-It Pro Rim
Average Reviews:

I bought the Lifetime backboard after much review. Upon recieving, the first thing I noticed is how flimsy the non breakable backboard was. Very thin 1/8" material. A basketball would thud against it and drop down. The reviews and discription I had read thus far were mostly positive. Don't be fooled when the discription says Backboard is one inch thick. This describes the metal bracing plus the thin backboard material. Very disappointed and I returned it back to Amazon. This might be fine for smaller kids but I wanted a musch sturdier goal and I did have to pay twice as much to find one. I found a 1/2" thick acrylic backboard from First team. As I said its much more expensive but it all depends on how much you are willing to spend, how long you want it to last, and if you want a sturdy rebounding like the schools have. MY high school aged son learnes to shot better and has to aim better for the shots to go in as a result, hopfully making him into a better shooter.

Hone your jumpshot in your driveway or invite some friends over for some spirited two-on-two with the Lifetime Competition 54-inch backboard and rim combo. The square Shatter Guard backboard--which integrates a clear playing surface with a high-quality steel frame--is made of Makrolon polycarbonate, which is virtually unbreakable and 30 times stronger than acrylic. As a result, broken backboards are a thing of the past, even from errant rocks and other non-basketball threats. The arena-style orange Slam-It Pro Rim, meanwhile, is designed specifically for players who like to throw down. The rim features wraparound bracing and double-compression springs that give way during dunks to protect the player, then spring back once released. Other details include fade-resistant UV-protected graphics; a powder-coated black-hammertone-finished steel backboard frame that adds rigidity for improved rebound; a blow-molded plastic frame pad for protection; and an all-weather nylon net. The set comes with a five-year warranty.

We installed this backboard on our existing pole & support bracket. It looks good, just slightly smaller than I would have thought. We've played 3 on 3 games several times on our driveway & the goal is great, absolutely no complaints. You can tighten the bolt underneath the breakaway part of the rim to get the proper tension on the rim, so it's not too tight or too bouncy. Overall it's probably not as sturdy as a more expensive backboard, but it's well worth the price & it will hold up just fine I think. I'd recommend it.

Lifetime 1221 Pro Court Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with 44-Inch Backboard Review

Lifetime 1221 Pro Court Height-Adjustable Portable Basketball System with 44-Inch Backboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Read all the reviews on this. Mind you, I was a bit skeptical at the price, but in the end, I locked and loaded on this one and am very happy. Below is my written review and I've also attached some video. Read the review first.
As for it being complicated to put together, I really did not find this to be an issue. Sure, there were a couple of vague areas, but I found if I just paused, thought about it for a while, the answer came to me. Aside from putting one bolt in backwards (kids could have bonked their head on it so just turned it around) it all worked out nicely. One adult can do most of the work, but you must have two for the mounting of the back board and hoop.
As for quality. It's just fine.
For little kids, I think this is perfect. If I was buying it for older kids, I might get one of the other models with a bigger back board and where the board is extended off the pole. I recorded a couple of videos which shows you how the back board sits right on the pole. As one reviews stated, if you were running and slamming, you'd run right into the pole. Sometimes the ball hits the pole and kicks it back out. So this hoop system is really more for "goofing" around than serious play.
If you have a limited budget and / or you just want something for goofing around, or for little kids who have an interest in Bball, really I can't find any faults. The price can't be beat. The system is very stable and sound.

Hone your jump shot in your spare moments or perform a backyard dunking drill with this Lifetime portable basketball system. Unlike in-ground basketball hoops--which are typically anchored in concrete--this portable hoop rolls on wheels, letting you position the basket support in your desired location, from the back patio to the middle of the cul-de-sac. All you have to do is fill the 27-gallon base with water or sand and play.
Lifetime knows that younger players aren't always ready for a 10-foot hoop, which is why the basket boasts a height-adjustment mechanism. The telescoping mechanism adjusts from 7.5 to 10 feet in 6-inch increments--no tools required--letting players of all ages and skill levels enjoy the game on their own terms. Aspiring dunkers can also gradually raise the basket 6 inches at a time as their vertical improves, although the 18-inch solid steel rim is not a breakaway rim. The black rim is instead extremely stable, with 1/2-inch steel braces, welded steel net hooks, and a 50-gram net.
And players needn't worry about the 44-inch backboard wearing dramatically over time thanks to the UV-protected, high-density polyethylene construction. This sturdy plastic material helps the board resist chipping and cracking while protecting the graphics from fading. Also equipped with a black, powder-coated, three-piece pole, the Lifetime system carries a five-year warranty.
About Lifetime In the beginning, all the founder of Lifetime Products wanted was a sturdier basketball pole for his backyard. With this in mind, he found and purchased a piece of heavy-duty used pipe, a sheet of plywood, and a basketball rim. The resulting backyard basketball standard functioned perfectly in his backyard. Seeing the potential of his hoop, he placed an ad in the local free classified newspaper and made his first sale. The rest--as they say--is history. He created the American PlayWorld Company in 1973, based out of his garage in Riverdale, Utah. After expanding into several other types of playground equipment, he eventually moved to a bigger location in South Ogden, Utah. Several years later, the company transformed the basketball industry by introducing the Quick Adjust basketball pole, the first complete basketball system you could raise and lower with a broomstick. In 1986, American PlayWorld created Lifetime Products, a separate company intended to concentrate specifically on manufacturing adjustable basketball systems. In the ensuing years, the company has grown from having 18 employees in a 32,000-square-foot space in half a warehouse to more than 1,400 employees and 2.6 million square feet over 23 separate buildings.
