Intuitive Analog Circuit Design Review

Intuitive Analog Circuit Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a design handbook for electronic engineering students and practicing engineers interested in learning practical techniques for designing and analyzing analog circuits using the basic building blocks of transistors, diodes, and op-amps. Readers will notice that the author makes some assumptions about the reader - that he or she has been exposed to undergrad courses in electronic devices, signals and systems, and signal processing. This is not a book for hobbyists.
Chapters one and two are introductory in nature. Chapter 1 provides the motivation for analog circuit design in general. Chapter 2 covers some important signal processing concepts that are the basis of material in later chapters. Chapters three through eight cover the bipolar device physics, the BJT, transistor amplifiers, and approximation techniques for bandwidth estimation and switching speed analysis. Chapter nine covers the basics of CMOS and CMOS amplifiers. The bandwidth estimation techniques developed in earlier chapters for amplifer design work well for CMOS devices as well.
Chapter 10 covers transistor switching, as in how you get a transistor to turn on and off quickly, and how you estimate that speed. Chapter 11 reviews feedback systems and Bode plot methods of designing stable feedback systems. The next two chapters discuss the design, use, and limitations of op-amps including voltage-feedback and current-feedback op-amps. Chapter 14 covers the basics of analog low-pass filter design, including ladder and active implementations of Butterworth, Chebyshev, elliptic, and Bessel filters. Chapter 15 switches topics and goes to PC board layout rules and the use and limitations of passive components. Chapter 16 is a mixed bag of useful design techniques and tricks that don't fit into the other chapters. The book contains illustrative analysis problems and MATLAB and PSPICE design examples throughout as well as chapter problem sets.
This book is a nice companion to The Art of Electronics and other such books that act as capstone courses, since it draws on a wide body of electronics knowledge - not just one course. Highly recommended for the practical kind of information and problems you often don't see in textbooks but that you'll require in industry.

This book reflects Dr. Thompson's twentyyears of experience designing and teaching analog circuit design, and is an outgrowth of course notes from his graduate-level analog circuit design course taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute entitled "Analog Circuits and Intuition." In this class, he describes intuitive and "back of the envelope" techniques for designing and analyzing analog circuits, including transistor amplifiers (CMOS and bipolar), transistor switching, thermalcircuit design, magnetic circuit design, control systems, and the like. The application of some simple rules-of-thumb and design techniques is the first step in developing an intuitive understanding of the behavior of complex electrical systems. This book outlines some ways of thinking about analog circuits and systems that hopefully develops such"circuit intuition" and a "feel" for what a good, working analog circuit design should be. *Introduces analog circuit design with a minimum of mathematics.*Gives readers an intuitive "feel" for analog circuit operation and rules-of-thumb for their design.*Uses numerous analogies from digital design to help readers whose main background is in digital make the transition to analog design.*Accompanying CD-ROM contains PowerPoint presentations for each chapter and MATLAB files used in the text.

It is a nice, easy to read description of analog and digital filtering. Nevertheless, I think that the digital filtering chapters are not enough to explore the potentialities of digital filters and the book would benefit from more practical project examples.
On the overall, it is good for a first approach to filtering, but the reader might need something else for a deeper view of the topic.

This is a great book.
This book is precise and informative, comprehensive and yet very easy to read. Without laboring over theory, it gets right to the heart of all types of electric motors and controls, covering all facets from classic to futuristic. The author fully understands the field and does not obscure the hard-to-understand areas; rather, the author illustrates the operation of each type of motor in a form that YOU WILL LEARN from, even to the point of following current flow through the motor windings so that you will see the causes of motor operation, and the genius of modern motor design.
Even if you think you know all there is to know about how electric motors work, this book will fill the gaps in your understanding.

Analog Design Essentials (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) Review

Analog Design Essentials (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)

There is a haphazard and unfinished feel to this book. This book has some good design information, but it can jump from the elementary to the advanced in the same chapter. It does not follow the conventional textbook style, but simulates a Powerpoint presentation, with two slides per page. I think there is an over-reliance on the slides. For example, about one hundred of the slides contain nothing but portions of the overall table of contents. Even books for further reading are listed in slides.
The main problem, however, is that EVERY slide is fuzzy, as though it had been printed with an old inkjet printer. The resolution of EVERY illustration is so low (near fax quality), that I cannot read some of the circuit diagram labels (see, for example, picture no. 2142 on page 658).
I also have a problem with the accompanying CD. It contains 24 pdf files, with a total size of 15 gigabytes (note, not 15 megabytes but 15 gigabytes) in an ordinary CD! Each file is larger than 600 megabytes, and there are 24 such files! Of course, this is not physically possible with an ordinary CD (only 700 megabytes total), nor even with a DVD. It means that the CD's file directory must have been manipulated so that it has a non-standard format which somehow tricks the computer into believing that the CD has 15 gigabytes. As I have discovered, you can open the pdf files with Acrobat Reader, but you cannot copy them to your hard disk (the file copy will fail). Therefore you must leave the CD in the drive all the time. In any case, these pdf files offer nothing extra, because they contain precisely the same low-resolution pictures that you find in the physical book, nothing more and nothing less, and also at the same low resolution (fax quality).

This unique book contains all topics of importance to the analog designer which are essential to obtain sufficient insights to do a thorough job. The book starts with elementary stages in building up operational amplifiers. The synthesis of opamps is covered in great detail. Many examples are included, operating at low supply voltages. Chapters on noise, distortion, filters, ADC/DACs and oscillators follow. These are all based on the extensive amount of teaching that the author has carried out world-wide. All slides are included on a CD-ROM, as PDF files, and are reproduced in the book, followed by the comments normally given by the teacher.

Analog Circuits (World Class Designs) Review

Analog Circuits (World Class Designs)
Average Reviews:

World class? Here's a review of some of the chapters: Review of Feedback systems....Basic Operation Amplifier Topologies....review of passive components and a case study in PC board layout, 4 chapters if you can believe it--on filter design, a chapter on noise....all of these represent basics, rudimentary material an EE grad should have mastered...and can hardly be considered world class. Some of the remaining chapters: How to Design Analog circuits without a computer....My approach to feedback design...Jim Williams "zoo circuit", while having their merits....can all be found in the "EDN series for
design engineers". And to publish Pease's notes on Vbe.....Pulease, Pease.... "What's all this vbe stuff" can be found online for free.
In summary, this text will help augment an undergraduate EE's education. It might be useful for non-hardware or digital designer types who have to stray out of their comfort zones, into the analog domain. But there is little in this text that actually world class. Williams Zoo circuit is the the only world class design. Everything else is either rudimentary, or a rip off of other previous published material.
I downgraded the text to 3 stars because the text is somewhat deceptive as to what it purports to be. It should be more appropriately titled: "Analog Circuits: Basics To Be Mastered". The authors are competent, and well known in the field, so it wasn't downgraded any further.

Electric Motors and Control Techniques Review

Electric Motors and Control Techniques

Overall I found this to be an excellent book. I enjoyed every page, and in particular tracing out circuit operations of the various schematics. I thought the diversity of circuits was great.
Nowhere in the title did I see "Basics of" or Fundementals of". This is not a book for the novice. The reader must have a good understanding of AC and DC motors, and solid state theory, circiuts, and devices.
I found the concatenation of induction motors, and the Kramer speed control system very interesting. I have many old industrial control books, but none shows these systems.
There are several errors, and examples of such are: Page 44, Para 3 is completely wrong. The proper way to reverse direction of compound motors is to reverse A1 and A2. Page 57, para 2 relates to this proper method. Fig. 5-9 Q102 shows a JFET- should be a UJT. Fig. 5-13 Q1 same thing. Fig. 5-10 has negative 250 VDC lines to emitters of Q532-Q536 and Q552-Q556 missing. Eliminate lead from motor to bottom of C541. Fig. 6-11 motor will never reverse with this scheme. Turning dial in opposite direction FWD biasis Q2 turning on Q1 which energizes RY2. RY1 drops out turning system off. Motor never runs CCW.
I have a comprehensive technical library, and one of my books is by this author entitled "Design and Operation of Regulated Power Supplies". It's an old book, and it's full of solid state circuits. I am indebted to authors like Mr Gottlieb, for it's their writings that enabled me to learn solid state electronics.

Electricity Demystified Review

Electricity Demystified

This book is an excellent primer on the properties of electricity, the words used to describe it, how to work with it and compute the values of the descriptors. Using diagrams, formulas and worked examples, the reader is taken from the basics to the specifics of AC and DC electricity as well as the relationship between electricity and magnetism. A short set of questions is given at the end of each chapter and two major exams are included. Without question, this is the best beginning book on electricity that I have ever seen.

Electricity is a strong topic for McGraw-Hill, as seen with our tremendous sales figures with the TAB list. The books sell well across nearly every channel, and are extremely well received internationally. Electricity Demystified is a self-teaching guide intended for anybody who wants to get familiar with the basic concepts of electricity, be it for a course, professional, or personal reasons. It is a pre-cursor to our much more in-depth title, Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, one of McGraw-Hill's most successful TAB titles, also by Stan Gibilisco.
