Excellent relief for the hiker who also carries a camera. This one's price and construction are well matched.

This adjustable-length walking staff is built with the same features as the Sherlock staff, but without a foam sheath so the length-adjustment push-button holes are exposed. It has an adjustable Wedge Lock wrist loop, a removable walnut knob with a universal camera mount, and a spike tip beneath a removable rubber foot. Tracks walking staffs and trekking poles help you walk smarter. They reduce the impact of each step you take so that weight which is normally carried by your lower body is transferred to your arms and torso, lessening the stress on your legs by 510 pounds or more. This means you get more power and traction going uphill, and save your knees and ankles when coming back down. All Tracks staffs are hand-built with high-strength, lightweight anodized aluminum tubing. They are available as single walking staffs and paired trekking poles. Their soft foam handgrip stays comfortable hour after hour, while their adjustable wrist straps aid transfer of weight when walking.

Mountainsmith Rhyolite 6061 Trekking Poles - Pair Review

Mountainsmith Rhyolite 6061 Trekking Poles - Pair

Mine stayed strong for crossing streams or hiking on rocky trails, especially at Mount Osceola Trail in New Hampshire while it was very slippery with snow and icy water. I got my 2 poles as a set and was free with purchase of Mountainsmith Women's Laurel Backpack. I used only one pole at a time because I wanted one hand free and often switch pole from one hand to another. Though I relied on only one pole, I never fell "yet" even in the dark (in the rain at White Oak Canyon and Ceder Run at AT, Virginia). Of course, you will need good hiking boots to balance your feet. I have mine about a year now so can't tell for long lasting quality.

These poles are awesome! They give me great stability while walking over rocks, slippery trails or just around the neighborhood. A great investment.

Lock the antishock system on the Leki Thermolite Antishock Trekking Poles on your hike up, and turn the shock-absorbing system on for your downhill journey. The antishock system eases strain on your arms and shoulders as you hike down, but this system will rob power from you on the uphill, which is why it's key to use the Thermolite Trekking Poles' antishock on/off switches. Leki made these trekking poles with slight bends in the upper shaft sections so your wrists maintain neutral, relaxed positions as you hike. Adjust the Thermolite Antishock Poles to the right height for uphill and downhill sections of trail. A mix of aluminum and titanium on the shafts of these poles reduces weight.Product Features

Tracks Compact Travel Staff Review

Average Reviews:

This is a great hiking stick. The top hard wood knob has a built in compass, and is good to bash critters/persons that come at you in an aggressive manner. It also has a good wrist band made out of elastic that comes in quite handy. There is also a nice carrying strap. The stick can be extended or collapsed just buy twisting it a few times.
The hiking stick is collapsable and consists of three sections total. An added bonus is that there are "tick marks" measured off in increments along the extended portion of the hiking stick so you can measure the depth of any water obstacles that you come along. However, the measurements are in "metric". Kind of baffling. I just used a conversion scale and scratched the "english" measurement underneath the metric.
The handle screws off to offer a small compartment where you can store some matches or an emergency fishing kit or some sort of small items that may come in handy. The hiking stick comes with a hard plastic "V" that screws on in place of the hard wood handle. This is used for hunters for a rifle rest. Also, once the hard wood handle is screwed off, you can screw a camera in its place and the stick makes a good stand for photogrophy purposes.
About the only thing I can say "bad" about this hiking stick is that the rubber tip for the point of the stick has a tendency to un-screw itself when hiking. After a while it does get kind of aggravating, so one day I just tightened the tip a little too much and stripped out the threads in the collapsable sections and ruined my stick. I bought a second stick and used thread tape to help keep the rubber tip on. Now I have NO problems. I would suggest you do the same if you buy this hiking stick. Another "bad" comment is that this stick is kind of "pricey". However, as another reviewer commented, this hiking stick is worth every penny.
I have also used this stick to help hold up a poncho during a rain storm and also as a splint to keep a fellow hikers leg straight when she injured her leg/ankle. The alternate uses for this hiking stick is only limited to your imagination.

The Tracks Compact Travel Staff is hand-built with high-strength, lightweight anodized aluminum tubing. It features an upper section with push-button length adjustment and two shock-corded lower sections for compact storage and travel. Its length is adjustable between 48 and 54 inches (122 and 138 centimeters), its stored length is 19 inches (48 centimeters), and it weighs 10.5 ounces (300 grams). An elastic keeper strap secures the staff when collapsed. The staff has a contoured foam grip with adjustable wrist loop, a camera mount beneath a walnut knob, and a molded flex tip with removable rubber foot and trekking basket.
This staff is designed to reduce the impact of each step. The weight which is normally carried by the lower body is transferred to the arms and torso, lessening the stress on the legs by five to 10 pounds. This allows you to experience more power and traction going uphill and to reduce strain on the knees and ankles when coming down. These travel staffs are available as single walking staffs and paired as trekking poles.

Crescent Moon Trekking Poles Review

Crescent Moon Trekking Poles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These poles arrived very quickly and were as advertised. I have used trek poles for years in doing archaeology in the Flint Hills and I wanted poles to use for urban walks on concrete and asphalt. I got these poles because they were advertised as "shock absorbing". Maybe I should have done a little more research. Shock absorbing can barely be felt with the poles, which I have not tried out in the field yet. So the 3 star rating is less the capability of the poles as the description being less than I felt would have told me that when we talk about absorbing shock, we are talking about a "give" of 1.0 to 1.5 cm. These poles are a little heavier than my old ones so I'm not sure what my arms will feel like after a day in the field with them. I am sure they will give me the same service in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma that my old ones have done. For anyone who has not used trekking poles before, be sure and do your homework.

Eddie Bauer Hiking Pole Combo w/LED SOS & Compass Review

Eddie Bauer Hiking Pole Combo w/LED SOS and Compass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tha adjustability and anti-shock capability of these poles at this price ($20/set) is a great deal. However the quality of the compass and light heads is very poor. I got a set of these for a Christmas present purchased from Target--the compass didn't work (very cheap compass) and the battery channel in the light head was broken. I took them back to Target to replace them. They had 4 left and all the heads were broke in a various ways. I got a refund from Target and ordered a set from PFT Supply via Amazon.com here. They arrived on time (2-day Prime) but the compass doesn't work at all and the plastic pin that holds the head-hinge down is broke off so the head flops open and closed (not supposed to open at all on the compass head). I considered exchanging them but have come to the conclusion that it's just a poor design issue and that even if I got one that was not broke it wouldn't be long before it was. As such I'm keeping them. They're going to be used for casual hiking as very basic poles. They'll work fine for that. As I said the functioning of the poles themselves works just fine. Adjustability is easy and they seem to stay where they're adjusted to--at least when they're new. It's just a problem with the light and compass features of the head. I carry a real compass (and a Garmin Rino GPS/radio) along with me as well as a real flashlight so I won't rely on these gimmicky features anyway. For the price of $10 per pole + free shipping (Prime) they're a good buy if you want just basic collapsible anti-shock poles. Eddie Bauer of today is nowhere near the quality it used to be.

Hammers HP9 Anti-shock Hiking Pole with Compass & Thermometer Review

Hammers HP9 Anti-shock Hiking Pole with Compass and Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a pair of HP9 hiking poles ($40). My wife has a pair of REI hiking poles with anti-shock for $75. Compared with the REI hiking poles, HP 9 has the following shortcomings.
1. Handles and straps
HP9's handles are very hard and uncomfortable. The straps are simply nylon bands. I took them for a 4 hour hike. My hands were scratched. They could have sepnt a little bit more money to improve them. Next time I have to wear gloves to prevent any burns. REI's hiking poles' handles and straps are better-designed, soft, and fit the palms very well.
2. Carbide tips
HP9's tips are tiny and short. I don't think they are going to last long.
3. Anti-shock
HP9's springs are shorter then the REI's. I feel more shock absorbed with REI's poles.
4. Build quality
REI's again are better. But HP9's are O.K.
Basically, you get what you pay for. HP9 is not bad, but not outstanding. I would suggest you wear gloves when you use them.

Stansport Outdoorsman Trekking Pole Review

Stansport Outdoorsman Trekking Pole

I bought an expensive collapsable trekking pole to take on a trip to Machupicchu, only to discover that it wouldn't fit into my carry-on suitcase. As it turns out, nearly every one of the expensive collapsable walking sticks - which are supposedly designed for carry-on luggage - are about 1 inch too large for that purpose. Go figure. Plus, many travel sites claim that TSA (the airport security folks) won't let those sticks in the cabin.
So, I bought this item. It is nicely compact and very easily transported. No problem getting it through TSA. My only complaint is that the connections become a little loose and flimsy. It's just not that sturdy. Then again, it's a trade off between this packable trekking stick and more durable ones that would have to be checked at the airport.
