My opinion is this is an excellent bargin for fly rod, reel, backing, weight forward floating line, one leader, line cleaning cloth, and a small box for some flys. The 4 weight rod casts quite smoothly. Very impressive.

As a formwer world record holder on fly, I cannot endorse this rod enough, it's balance is perfect - as good as my Bruce & Walker salmon rods
i think the weight on the butt could be a little heavier, to balance a reel loaded with #8 sinking tip, but that's about all. Saltwater proof, and a joy to fish with.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the 5ft.6in.3wt.rod 01-26-10 thru amazon.I received rod in about a week.I fished the new rod two days later.After about thirty minutes of fishing my reel came off the rod because the but cap came off the rod.I was able to get the but cap with my net.I knew the rod had a lifetime warranty but I was afaid I would have to pay shipping and a 35.00 fee for another rod.I called wildwater the next day and got Eric Dodds(the owner).He was very helpful and told me I had to do nothing.He said he would send me another rod at once and for me to simply put the bad rod in the box the new rod came in and place the return label on it and give to UPS. I have received the new rod as promised. Eric also sent me a wildwater shirt.The rod felt great that first day .I think the rod is well made,the but falling off was just one of those things that can happen.That is why customer service is important.The treatment I received has already made me think about buying a 10wt. saltwater rod from wildwater.By the way it is very hard to find a 5ft6in. flyrod for small streams, at 99.00 this rod is a great buy!

Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete 5/6 Starter Package Review

(More customer reviews)I just got my combo today and I'm very happy with it. I needed to replace a rod that I broke and I didn't want to spend a lot. I chose Wild Water because of the price and the warranty. The shipping was free and super fast (UPS to Hawaii) which was great. Looks wise the rod is very basic, black wraps on dark grey, single stripping guide. Shiny metal (steel?) reel seat is a nice touch though. The reel is also very entry level but it's large arbor entry level which is nice. I took the setup out on a small stream for smallmouth and the thing was like butta. The casting was smooth and almost effortless. Full disclosure: I don't own any high end rods so I can't tell you "Casts better than my Winston (Loomis, Orvis, Sage, whatever)" but it sure casts better than my previous rod which was part of a Cabelas starter kit. The fly was going where I wanted it way more often than I'm used to. The slow action on this rod is said to be good for beginners, so I'll use this one to teach my sons to fly cast. I ordered a med/fast action for bigger water and windier days. I got both this combo and the 2nd rod for less than I was going to spend on just a starter rod/reel combo from a better known company. The 4 piece design is great for travel and the included case is solid. I know I've only had the stuff for a day, but it was a good day. I caught (and released) 6 bass including the 2 biggest I've ever got out of that particular stream. This outfit is a great place to start for a first timer, a great place to continue for kinda broke guys like me, and a can't-go-wrong backup for anyone else.

The convenient container makes it easy to store the rod sections and two reels in one easily accessible location. The fly rod is too short and the spinning rod is too flexible (same rod), but when one considers that the same rod can be used for both applications, this is a fantastic deal. The fly reel is small, but easily holds a regular fly line (not included but easily purchased), and the spinning reel has a smooth retrieve and holds plenty of line (also not included) if you are using light test (4 to 6 pound test) line.
