My opinion is this is an excellent bargin for fly rod, reel, backing, weight forward floating line, one leader, line cleaning cloth, and a small box for some flys. This whole setup really falls more into the ultra-light category, but rod sensitivity and reel performance were great for a light setup. Really a perfect all around trout fishing setup.

i think the weight on the butt could be a little heavier, to balance a reel loaded with #8 sinking tip, but that's about all. Saltwater proof, and a joy to fish with.

(More customer reviews)A friend purchase this rod for me. i am very disappointed with it first thing it is being affected by salt water after the first fishing trip it start to sign of rusting although it was washed of with fresh water after the trip. on the second trip it broke that was the end of it. very very poor quality and the reel is also of poor design and quality. the only good thing is that it can fold up nice and easy to store.

It is exactly how it is described. It was just a little shy of 14 ft. 9 but still very happy. The end where you hold it is covered with a material that gives a good grip. The reel works and is filled with line, ready to fish. I have not tried yet but it feels great. Before ordering I exchanged emails with the owner, to be sure that he has the length as advertised. Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete 5/6 Starter Package Review

(More customer reviews)I just got my combo today and I'm very happy with it. I needed to replace a rod that I broke and I didn't want to spend a lot. I chose Wild Water because of the price and the warranty. The shipping was free and super fast (UPS to Hawaii) which was great. Looks wise the rod is very basic, black wraps on dark grey, single stripping guide. Shiny metal (steel?) reel seat is a nice touch though. The reel is also very entry level but it's large arbor entry level which is nice. I took the setup out on a small stream for smallmouth and the thing was like butta. The casting was smooth and almost effortless. Full disclosure: I don't own any high end rods so I can't tell you "Casts better than my Winston (Loomis, Orvis, Sage, whatever)" but it sure casts better than my previous rod which was part of a Cabelas starter kit. The fly was going where I wanted it way more often than I'm used to. The slow action on this rod is said to be good for beginners, so I'll use this one to teach my sons to fly cast. I ordered a med/fast action for bigger water and windier days. I got both this combo and the 2nd rod for less than I was going to spend on just a starter rod/reel combo from a better known company. The 4 piece design is great for travel and the included case is solid. I know I've only had the stuff for a day, but it was a good day. I caught (and released) 6 bass including the 2 biggest I've ever got out of that particular stream. This outfit is a great place to start for a first timer, a great place to continue for kinda broke guys like me, and a can't-go-wrong backup for anyone else.

If it weren't for customer support, who were very kind and actually listened to me. Not only did she place a new order for me, but she also made sure that it was packed properly, not to mention emailed me the billing & shipping forms. I received the replacement within 2 days. Shakespeare equipment is really good. I still have my Shakespeare Pro-Am Series Combo from 1987 and it's STILL the rod and reel I grab. I have caught all kinds of fish from all types of places. (More customer reviews)I've had Ugly Stiks and Shakespeare reels for salt water for many years and thought I'd try some freshwater trout fishing. I needed something small and inexpensive and this combo fit the bill. Sure the reel has only one bearing but it's still smooth and should last quite a few years when properly maintained. The action on the Ugly Stik is light, the construction is solid and the two pieces fit snugly together. The reel is solid, cranks smoothly and the bail returns acceptably. I prefer the rear drag adjustment and this one seems to work very well. The black color on both the rod and reel are good for stealth in clear streams (no shiny parts) and looks good too. It casts smoothly and hits the mark every time (mainly because I'm just that good). Can you buy something much better? Sure. In my research I can across an ultralight reel that cost $1300. I say buy this Shakespeare Combo and then take the $1260 and go on a nice vacation to the mountains. I'll pass this rig on to my son and upgrade some day but as for now this will do just fine.
Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)I have two of these and they work great for channel catfish. I have not used them for large blues or caught a flathead on one, but for large channels they hold up nicely. The bait alarm seems gimicky but properly adjusted it has alerted to me to many fish when my back is turned, I'm snelling a hook and not watching, or down the bank putting a fish on the stringer. To make the spincast bait alarm work correctly you have to point the rod tip toward the water so the rod holder needs to be the right kind, not a verticle one. Bass Pro sells a nice bank rod holder that works well with these combos. In 3 years I have had to replace the batteries once on one of the reels (very easy to do), and of course the line should be changed out at least once a year. This is a good combo for beginners and serious fishermen alike, it should not let you down.
