Casting a Spell: The Bamboo Fly Rod and the American Pursuit of Perfection Review

Casting a Spell: The Bamboo Fly Rod and the American Pursuit of Perfection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I myself am a maker of bamboo rods, so I may be somewhat prejudiced, but Casting a Spell cast a spell over me. Black has caught the spirit of our craft in his telling of the story of the development of the fine bamboo fly rod and the people involved in making them from the late 19th century until the present. He begins at the beginning-- that is, with H. L. Leonard and the group of marvelous rod makers who worked with him in the late 19th century. This core group of rod makers served as the wellspring of all bamboo rod making in the United States. Eustace Edwards, Fred Thomas, Edward Payne and the Hawes Brothers, and of course, Hiram Leonard himself.-- though each of them had distinct personalities, they all had one thing held in common; a drive for perfection.
It was not Black's intention to write a complete history of American bamboo fly rod making. Rather, it was his intention to trace the quest for perfection shown by lives and work of the original Leonard crew as they dispersed and established their own shops and their own versions of perfection in fly rod making. Black believes that Eustace Edwards, with his restless quest for the perfect fly rod, epitomizes all that is best in craftsmanship. Therefore, his book focuses primarily on Eustace and his offspring, their contributions to the art of rod making and the personal and professional interconnections among the great rod makers.
Black does not attempt to explain how the bamboo fly rod is made, but it is really unnecessary to know much about that to understand the book. There is really very little new in the book in terms of the history of the bamboo fly rod and its construction. What Black has accomplished here is to bring life to these remarkable men and put the history of bamboo fly rod making into the context of changes in the social and economic climate of the United States in the last century. Industrial mechanization changed the way in which many products are manufactured, marketed and consumed. Originally, bamboo fly rods were a luxury item, but mass production in the machine age, and the creation of the middle class changed all that. Then, almost anyone could afford a bamboo fly rod, but only the very rich could afford a rod hand-made by a fine craftsman driven toward perfection. And even then, a rod maker could only earn a pittance to keep the price of a rod competitive with the finest machine- made rods. These pressures relentlessly forced craftsmen to compromise their ideals to make a living. One can only describe this as agony and ecstasy. With these economic and social changes, the embargo on Chinese bamboo and the introduction of fiberglass and graphite, one would expect that the craft of fine bamboo rod making would be extinct -- not so. Black finishes his work with a whirlwind tour through rod shops of many of the modern makers who are carrying on the craft, portraying each as a distinct personality having a distinct approach to perfection in rod making.
For some bamboo rod history enthusiasts, there will be disappointment in that many of the large rod manufacturers -- Heddon, Granger, Chubb, Montague etc. -- are left out of the story. The book is an easy read, is well-written and the style is novelistic. Black's enthusiasm for the subject is obvious -- and quite contagious. However, the reader must have some appreciation for the useful beauty inherent in a fine bamboo fly rod in order to appreciate this book. The book should be all on the shelf of any bamboo fly rod enthusiast.

Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods Review

Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good reference book, but should not be your sole source of information. Too much is left out that is critical to building a first rod. For example, a lot of details are missing with regards to what you need to do with the blank once it comes out of the glue binder. WHat about scraping, filing, sanding and keeping those sharp edges? The book could also do with better organization.

The bamboo fly rod represents the pinnacle of the fly-fishing art: its apparent simplicity and delicacy belie the craftsmanship and strength that are the hallmarks of all great rods. Wayne Cattanach begins in the Kwangsi and Kwantung provinces of China, where Tonkin bamboo takes about eight years to develop the qualities that distinguish it from all other materials: a tensile strength akin to steel, light in weight, with the flexibility that gives all bamboo rods their relaxed action. He describes the process that will take anyone from lengths of hard, raw bamboo to a beautiful finished rod with clear, step-by-step instructions, including how to: find the best supplies; select tools and materials; make and use heat treaters and binders; select rod taper, weight, and action; cut culms; straighten bamboo strips; primary and secondary planing; stagger bamboo strips; give proper heat treating; bind strips; apply finish; mount the reel seat, ferrules, and tip top; and much more.Scores of illustrations and line drawings demonstrate crucial techniques that before this book could only be guessed at, and Wayne's years of experience with pupils and bamboo are brought to bear at every step as his invaluable tips not only instruct, but also explain how to avoid common beginners' mistakes. This is surely the most thorough book available for those who want to have the pleasure of making, and fishing, their own bamboo fly rods.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Rod Building Guide: Fly, Spinning, Casting, Trolling Review

Rod Building Guide: Fly, Spinning, Casting, Trolling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been building rods for 25 years and sold them professionally for 15. So I know a few things about rod building. I bought the Rod Building Guide originally just to have it for my library - I didn't think there would be anything in it that I didn't know. I was wrong.
Although the book is aimed at the beginner, it is full of information for the advanced rod builder as well. So much of what we rod builders do is based on information that is outdated or not entirely accurate. What Mr. Kirkman has done, is explain the intricacies of things like spine, adhesives, modulus, action, power, mechanics, etc., etc., into plain everyday language that anyone can understand and learn from. He also dispels many of the common rod building myths that have come down the pike over the years.
The 100 full color photos are clear and the text is concise. .... This one is the cream of the crop. You cannot do better if you want the best instruction possible on building your own fishing rod.

The rod was broken in shipment, and the entire kit was replaced within days after I sent notification. My opinion is this is an excellent bargin for fly rod, reel, backing, weight forward floating line, one leader, line cleaning cloth, and a small box for some flys. The 4 weight rod casts quite smoothly. Very impressive.

Hi,
As a formwer world record holder on fly, I cannot endorse this rod enough, it's balance is perfect - as good as my Bruce & Walker salmon rods
i think the weight on the butt could be a little heavier, to balance a reel loaded with #8 sinking tip, but that's about all. Saltwater proof, and a joy to fish with.

Echo Micro Practice Fly Rod Review

Echo Micro Practice Fly Rod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am just getting into fly fishing and I thought this would be helpful for practicing my casting. It helped a lot and I was ready to go when I got in the water. Although it is short, it still mimics a real rod pretty well. I recommend it for beginners, children, or anyone who wants to improve their technique.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Echo Micro Practice Fly Rod

One of the greatest challenges of learning to fly cast is the issue of finding room! Learning to form a proper cast usually requires significant space above, behind and in front of you. Additionally, learning to single-hand spey cast or roll cast is downright difficult without water. The new Echo Micro Practice Rod was designed to minimize the need for space without sacrificing rod action. This miniature rod comes with everything you need to practice casting -- the two piece, four foot rod, highly-visible line, yarn leader and even a small pamphlet on basic casts. The rod is perfectly balanced with the line and leader to force you to exaggerate the proper motions required to form a good cast. When used on a carpeted surface, you can practice roll casts and single-hand spey casts. The Micro Practice Rod acts and feels just like a standard fly rod, so transitioning from the practice rod to a real rod is simple. All this can be done from the comfort of your couch!

Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete 5/6 Starter Package Review

Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete 5/6 Starter Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got my combo today and I'm very happy with it. I needed to replace a rod that I broke and I didn't want to spend a lot. I chose Wild Water because of the price and the warranty. The shipping was free and super fast (UPS to Hawaii) which was great. Looks wise the rod is very basic, black wraps on dark grey, single stripping guide. Shiny metal (steel?) reel seat is a nice touch though. The reel is also very entry level but it's large arbor entry level which is nice. I took the setup out on a small stream for smallmouth and the thing was like butta. The casting was smooth and almost effortless. Full disclosure: I don't own any high end rods so I can't tell you "Casts better than my Winston (Loomis, Orvis, Sage, whatever)" but it sure casts better than my previous rod which was part of a Cabelas starter kit. The fly was going where I wanted it way more often than I'm used to. The slow action on this rod is said to be good for beginners, so I'll use this one to teach my sons to fly cast. I ordered a med/fast action for bigger water and windier days. I got both this combo and the 2nd rod for less than I was going to spend on just a starter rod/reel combo from a better known company. The 4 piece design is great for travel and the included case is solid. I know I've only had the stuff for a day, but it was a good day. I caught (and released) 6 bass including the 2 biggest I've ever got out of that particular stream. This outfit is a great place to start for a first timer, a great place to continue for kinda broke guys like me, and a can't-go-wrong backup for anyone else.

This rod is designed by Wild Water to be very forgiving for the beginning fly caster yet sophisticated enough for an experienced angler to appreciate. Zebco HAWG SEEKER/702MH WithBITE ALERT SC Fishing Rod and Reel Combo Review

Zebco HAWG SEEKER/702MH WithBITE ALERT SC Fishing Rod and Reel Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two of these and they work great for channel catfish. I have not used them for large blues or caught a flathead on one, but for large channels they hold up nicely. The bait alarm seems gimicky but properly adjusted it has alerted to me to many fish when my back is turned, I'm snelling a hook and not watching, or down the bank putting a fish on the stringer. To make the spincast bait alarm work correctly you have to point the rod tip toward the water so the rod holder needs to be the right kind, not a verticle one. Bass Pro sells a nice bank rod holder that works well with these combos. In 3 years I have had to replace the batteries once on one of the reels (very easy to do), and of course the line should be changed out at least once a year. This is a good combo for beginners and serious fishermen alike, it should not let you down.

Great value. You get a good ,light, action rod .A perfectly functioning (plastic) reel,2 wet flies,fly-line and a leader. Ideal for learner/beginner or in my case an old veteran fisherman. You can easily replace the reel with a better model should you wish later. The rod has a nice even action and I was surprised at how good it reacted. Make sure to buy your own Flies before using it(As all flies are local and seasonal). I would recommend this .
