This is the first book in over 60 years that tells about the life, training, and dangers of the linemen that live and work in every town and city of America.
A very young Glade Elliott just finishes high school when the opportunity to become a lineman presents itself. Meacham, a grizzled old lineman, takes Glade under his wing and begins to teach the young man the 'art' of being a powerlineman. While the old man was one of the first of the trade, he tried to help his young charge avoid the problems faced, but, like a parent trying to help his child learn without mistakes, the elder lineman had difficulty trying to get through to Glade.
Glade then strikes out as a 'boomer' or 'tramp' lineman, travelling the country, meeting interesting people, and learning about life and love at the same time. He learns the extreme hazards of working at the heights and with lethal electricity as he journeys toward the brotherhood of powerlinemen.
