This class, Biomechanics, was the hardest class I took in college, yet somehow ended-up being my favorite. The professor was really cool, and always helpful, which I really appreciated. I sold this wonderful textbook at the end of the class, but I wish I hadn't. I highly recommend this book by Peter McGinnis. In fact, I'd like to meet him sometime!

Like the groundbreaking first edition, Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition, introduces exercise and sport biomechanics in simple and concise terms rather than focusing on complex math and physics. With a unique presentation of biomechanical concepts supported with illustrations, the book helps students learn to appreciate external forces and their effects, how the body generates forces to maintain position, and how forces create movement in physical activities. Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition, allows students to discover the principles of biomechanics through observation of common activities. By observing ordinary activities firsthand, students will be able to develop functional and meaningful explanations, resulting in a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanical concepts. This practical approach combines striking visual elements with clear and concise language to encourage active learning and improved comprehension. Many new benefits are in the second edition for students and instructors alike: · More sample problems throughout the book to illustrate problem-solving techniques· A quick reference guide of frequently used equations printed on the inside cover· A new chapter on technology used in the study of biomechanics· Review questions at the end of each chapter to test the reader's understanding of important concepts · A new instructor guide outlining each chapter and step-by-step solutions to the quantitative problems presented, as well as a test packageBiomechanics of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition, is ideal for those needing a deeper understanding of biomechanics from a qualitative perspective. Designed for students who will likely take only one course in biomechanics, the text prepares students to utilize the principles of biomechanics as professionals in the physical activity field. Thoroughly updated and expanded, Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, Second Edition, makes the biomechanics of physical activity easy to understand and apply.

Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy Review

Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy

Mr. Svensson's book presents detailed analyses of 17 skate skiing techniques and more. I really liked that each technique was presented in a several different ways. Anyone who has teaching experience knows that two different students may find different approaches to a subject more effective. As to 'technical errors' found by 'elite skiers' I have a feeling nordic skiiers are like musicians. It is said that the only thing two musicians can agree on is the incompetence of a third. Indeed there are a variety of tweeks and variations on each technique that will prove to be effective for each skiier. This book provides ample material for a starting point. This is a really amazing book.

Above and Beyond: Tim Mack, the Pole Vault, and the Quest for Olympic Gold Review

Above and Beyond: Tim Mack, the Pole Vault, and the Quest for Olympic Gold

I spent my high school years in the high jump pit and was always jealous of the glory guys who needed a pole to achieve lift-off.
Now I know why I was jealous. Pole vaulters really are more interesting than the rest of us, regardless of whether we've ever competed in track and field.
Bill Livingston's crackerjack telling of Tim Mack's high flown adventures is the most interesting book I've read all year -- and there's not a high jumper in it.
"Above and Beyond" proves that some of the best writing in this country is done by the lonely guys way up there fighting deadline pressure in a stuffy press box. Livingston is one of the sportswriting's finest practitioners. And Mack's story is infinitely worth the telling.

Winner of the 2009 National Media Award from the Pole Vault Development Committee of USA Track and FieldForeWord Magazine's 2008 Silver Award Winner for Excellence in Sports Books "Above and Beyond is a treat. Livingston's knowledge and love of the sport shines through."--David Maraniss, author of Rome 1960: The Olympics That Changed the WorldTwo Olympic medalists were recognized at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, days before Christmas 2004. One was the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James, the "Chosen One" of the NBA. He had a bronze medal from the Athens games that summer. The other was a Cleveland homeboy too, a gold medalist who had flown higher than anyone before on the Olympic stage. Hardly anyone knew his name. He was Tim Mack. His high school coach did not see anything particularly promising in the young pole-vaulter. Mack never made it to the state meet, and he was the first to admit he had a fear of heights. But thanks to his unflinching determination and confidence, Mack went on to prove that he was anything but mediocre. In 2004 the young athlete won the Olympic gold medal for pole vaulting. His jump of 19 feet 6-1/4 inches was not only Mack's personal best but the highest in Olympic history.Award-winning sports columnist Bill Livingston follows Mack as he practices one of the world's most dangerous and demanding sports. Livingston reveals the fascinating subculture of pole vaulting--from Bob Richards, the only man to win Olympic gold twice in pole vaulting; to Sergey Bubka, the most controversial pole vaulter ever; to Don Bragg, a rowdy Tarzan-like character who swung on ropes in his backyard to build upper-body strength; to the stirring duel between Mack and Toby Stevenson as they battled for gold in Athens.Readers will discover how Mack struggled and endured, while working in a factory, as a mascot in a bumblebee costume, and as a janitor, and how Mack changed his training and revamped his body and mind in a three-year program that made his AOL username, Goldnathens, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Winning Jumps and Pole Vault Review

When I heard Ed Jacoby was putting together a new book on the "jumps", I thought it would be tough to top his earlier collaboration with Bob Fraley. But this book is the best in its "field!" Ed recruited the best jumps coaches on the planet for this one-- Greg Hull, Cliff Rovelto, Boo Schexnayder and Tom (and Kyle) Tellez are inarguably among the best in the world, if not the best. Each obviously put great effort into their sections. The descriptions of drills for each event are superb-- it's usually somewhat difficult to visualize a drill from pictures and written descriptions, but these are outstanding. I really appreciate Ed's inclusion of Keith Henschen and Will Freeman's contributions as well-- they're a valuable addition to this text. I'd highly recommend this manual for every track & field coach from youth to international-level!
