Cross Country Skiing: Olympic Handbook of Sports Medicine Review

Cross Country Skiing: Olympic Handbook of Sports Medicine

I bought this book expecting great things given the FIS and IOC endorsement. What happen was that it forced me to sit down and read critically about my sport. There is alot of worthwhile information here, but there are also a lot of errors. It is very typical of reports about sports written by academics who do not ski. To say that because these scientists could not see "adominal muscules working, in xc skiing therefore they do not contribute to ski skating" shows blunt ignorance of the reality of the sport. Unfortunately, great scientific data is spoiled by wild conclusions based on observation not experience. Buy this book if you are experienced enought to know the difference.

This book is definitely for the cross-country skier who is also a racer, or wants to begin racing. This is not the book for the occasional skier who only wants to slide and glide on the golf course. Steve Gaskill, the author, was coach of the US Ski Team for ten years. Since it was written by a coach, "Fitness,Cross-Country Skiing" is a very highly organized, step by step instructions for getting it top shape to compete in the demanding sport of Nordic racing - everything from 5K sprints up to 50K marathons. Everything a competitor needs to know is here, dry land training, on snow training, exercises in the hills, on the flats, roller blading, stretching, and rest days. There are heart rate charts, calories burned charts, and suggested levels of training for everyone from the out-of-shape weekend racer to the elite world class athlete. This is a wonderful resource of the competitor or one interested in total fitness.

Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy Review

Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy

Mr. Svensson's book presents detailed analyses of 17 skate skiing techniques and more. I really liked that each technique was presented in a several different ways. Anyone who has teaching experience knows that two different students may find different approaches to a subject more effective. As to 'technical errors' found by 'elite skiers' I have a feeling nordic skiiers are like musicians. It is said that the only thing two musicians can agree on is the incompetence of a third. Indeed there are a variety of tweeks and variations on each technique that will prove to be effective for each skiier. This book provides ample material for a starting point. This is a really amazing book.

Steve Hindman's book is an outstanding introduction to Nordic skiing. He starts from scratch, describing the types of skis and bindings, and showing you how to get started for the first time. He then gradually progresses to the more advanced techniques of efficient and enjoyable cross country skiing. I have been Nordic skiing for 26 years without much instruction, and I learned a lot from the book. I highly recommend it.

I just received the Bowtie Ski Carrier and must say that it is as easy to use as was demonstrated on the manufacturer's website. I tried a different product and the Bowtie is by far a more superior ski carrier. The ease of carrying the skis and poles with the wider strap and being able to adjust it, makes a world of difference. I am happy I ordered the Bowtie and I highly recommend it to all skiers, I give it two thumbs up.
