(More customer reviews)This book LACKS a great attention to detail in the most common of areas. Hands are left open on every movement, footwork is almost non-existant, and the center of gravity is every BUT where it belongs. The demo of the Muk-Yan-Chong goes back and forth with pictures of Dr. Smith and one of his students. Every Wing Chun practitioner knows the swords are NEVER turned backwards along the forearm, yet he displays this quite often. The pole form is over 50 movements, yet Dr. Smith displays approximately 10 and claims this is all there really is. There is very little detail in the execution of movements outside of a general description. In short, this book looks to be written for someone who has no knowledge of Wing Chun, Wing Tsun, or Ving Tsun whatsoever. Those that do, I recommend not wasting your money.

Bo: Karate Weapon of Self-Defense Review

(More customer reviews)Demura Sensei presents a well-organized primer in the use of the rokushaku bo (six-foot Okinawan quarter-staff). The book is organized into Introduction & History, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced techniques, and a final section devoted to a bo kata. All basic stances, blocks and counters used with the bo are covered in the first sections. Many of these are similar or identical to standard open-hand karate techniques. Descriptions of subtle differences are well-explained. Combinations and working with a partner are covered in the latter sections of the book. Overall, the photo sequences of this acknowledged bo master demonstrating his art are very good, with the exception of the final bo kata pictures, which are very dark. This is an excellent reference.

Demura, who studied under Taira Shinken, covers stances, striking, blocking, combinations, sparring, and an entire kata. Demura is considered among the finest bo experts of the modern age. Fully illustrated.

Advanced Stick Fighting Review

(More customer reviews)I know that many dislike this book for its highly stylized content. Some say, "Lots of fluff not much stuff." If one was to be utilitarian about it, then this book is really a waste of cash. But then again, it depends upon what you are expecting. It certainly is not a text on stick or pole fighting for a novice. I guess in some ways it may not even be a text on stick fighting! The applications and photos require insight into the inner meaning of things, with little being obvious. I must say that had I not seen Hatsumi actually move, and also practiced martial arts for some time, I would have been clueless. This book for me was less instructional than it was in giving a certain feeling. Again, another one of Hatsumi's teaching methods that can be confusing. He certainly is not teaching to the lower levels. If you are looking for a Hatsumi book that is more user-friendly, check out his classic "Stick Fighting" coauthored with Quasten.Enjoy!
