The Christmas Bear
The Christmas Bear by Henrietta and was one of the best picture books I've ever read! It's cute, elegant, and adorable. This book is a fun filled book that will make you feel good at the end. You will get excited as you feel the joy of the bear on his journey out of his cozy den.
This story is about a curious bear as he wanders outside of his den when suddenly he falls into a bright and warm hole. The North Pole! (Santa's workshop.) Santa thinks the little bear is there to apply for a job. After along day of looking at jobs Santa realizes the bear isn't there to apply for a job. Responsibly Santa takes the little bear home but first gives him a gift he will never forget.
This book was a magnificent book to read. I liked it because it was not hard to read and I truly pictured the little bear as he discovered lots of things about the North Pole. The illustrations were marvelous! I would highly recommend this book for young kids. And probably read this book before any other Christmas tale.

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs Review

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs

This is a beautiful book about appliqueing and their designs for Christmas. They cover everything from quilts, wall hangings to table runners, stockings and Christmas tree rounds. You can mix and match the ideas here and make everything you need for Christmas.
The nice parts are that the directions are complete for both hand piecing and machine (called fusible in the book) sewing & that most of the designs require small amounts (1/2 yard; 5/8 yard there) of fabric so if you have leftovers you can find places to use them here. Also nice is the ability to copy the designs for your own use. A nice present in itself.
The downside? You should be near a copier and have sharp scissors.
All in all, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. It's a real joy to view and look at. I wish some of the designs were shown bigger in colour but it's a minor quibble.

How refreshing to come across Sophie Kringle and Auntie Claus in this unusual Christmas story! Finally, two strong female characters in a book with a sense of humor...sure, Sophie is a bit of a brat, but she has such a self-assured sense of adventure; Auntie Claus sees to it that Sophie develops a kind heart as well, in this beautifully illustrated book so chock full of Christmas that I'm already shopping for those little hard candies! Bravo, Ms. Primavera!

Welcome to the North Pole: Santa's Village in Applique Review

Welcome to the North Pole: Santa's Village in Applique

As a beginning applique quilter with intermediate sewing skills, getting this book is like being a kid in a candy store! I don't know which little house to make first!
Much of the applique is very teeny-tiny (e.g. the reindeer antlers, window panes). However, the book gives tips on simplifying these hard parts (e.g. using twigs or ultrasuede for the reindeer antlers). Actually, the applique is easier than it looks, and the results are GREAT! It really isn't that much harder to 'cut as you go' (for the thin spirals). I'm learning a lot of applique techniques by working on this quilt.
The book itself is simply a black and white compilation of the patterns needed to complete the quilt on the front cover.
I saw this quilt completely finished at a quilt show and it is absolutely breath-taking. I spent half an hour just standing there and looking at all the detail of the quilt. It snagged each person who walked by and got a lot of attention! If you are looking for a project that will be greatly admired, this certainly is worth tackling.

It's a great product to play on when it's finally assembled but that wasn't as easy as it should have been. Some of the parts that were suppossed to be pre assembled were not and they were not included in the box. I called Spalding and the customer service was friendly but not very helpful. They said that they would ship the parts but after a week I called back and they told me they didn't ship anything because they were all out of the bolts I needed. They told me it would take a month to get the bolts from headquarters and another couple of weeks to mail it to me. I asked for the specs of the bolts and went to Lowes where I paid about $4 for all the materials. I'm glad I called back because it appeared they just dropped the issue when they realized they didn't have the parts.

Amazon.com Basketball System Buying Guide With the high-quality construction of many portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as hooking up your garden hose. But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide.
In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease.
Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system.
Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list.
Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage.
Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action.
The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board.
