The Christmas Bear Review

The Christmas Bear
The Christmas Bear by Henrietta and was one of the best picture books I've ever read! It's cute, elegant, and adorable. This book is a fun filled book that will make you feel good at the end. You will get excited as you feel the joy of the bear on his journey out of his cozy den.
This story is about a curious bear as he wanders outside of his den when suddenly he falls into a bright and warm hole. The North Pole! (Santa's workshop.) Santa thinks the little bear is there to apply for a job. After along day of looking at jobs Santa realizes the bear isn't there to apply for a job. Responsibly Santa takes the little bear home but first gives him a gift he will never forget.
This book was a magnificent book to read. I liked it because it was not hard to read and I truly pictured the little bear as he discovered lots of things about the North Pole. The illustrations were marvelous! I would highly recommend this book for young kids. And probably read this book before any other Christmas tale.

The Last Christmas Review

The Last Christmas

I picked up this book looking for a quick funny read, what I didn't expect to be entranced by the storyline. Yes, this comic is funny...the most funny Christmas tale you are ever likely to read...but that's not all it is. It's also a really good story in its own right.
The world has pretty much ended; nuclear war has destroyed the world and created zombie-like creatures. The survivors gather together in fortified cities to wait out the zombie menace, but zombies aren't the only thing these people have to worry about anymore. Nope, now there are renegade humans running around ransacking villages, raping women, and murdering anyone who gets in their way.
After a group of renegades attack the North Pole and kill Mrs. Clause...Santa goes off the deep end. He becomes a hopeless drunk and all he wants to do is kill himself...this is difficult since as it turns out he can't die as long as there are good boys and girls who still believe in him. Santa sets out on a quest to kill the last children who still believe so he may finally rest in peace, will he chop them to little pieces? Or will he be moved by their innocents to sober up and put a few buck shots into a zombie scull.
This comic is beyond awesome, buy it.

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs Review

A Slice of Christmas from Piece O'Cake Designs
Average Reviews:

This is a beautiful book about appliqueing and their designs for Christmas. They cover everything from quilts, wall hangings to table runners, stockings and Christmas tree rounds. You can mix and match the ideas here and make everything you need for Christmas.
The nice parts are that the directions are complete for both hand piecing and machine (called fusible in the book) sewing & that most of the designs require small amounts (1/2 yard; 5/8 yard there) of fabric so if you have leftovers you can find places to use them here. Also nice is the ability to copy the designs for your own use. A nice present in itself.
The downside? You should be near a copier and have sharp scissors.
All in all, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. It's a real joy to view and look at. I wish some of the designs were shown bigger in colour but it's a minor quibble.

A celebration of Christmas with "Piece O'Cake Designs". There are seven Christmas projects, including applique quilts, stockings, tree skirts, and a table runner. Designs feature a retro '50s Santa, Christmas tree, and Santa sampler from past favourites "A Piece O'Cake Christmas" and "A Sampling of Santas", as well as a new poinsettia design. Quilters should also be able to mix and match patterns to create even more projects.

Letters from Father Christmas, Revised Edition Review

Letters from Father Christmas, Revised Edition
Average Reviews:

It is not surprising the creator of Middle Earth, and the father of the fantasy genre, would create such an elaborate, creative collection of Christmas stories for his children. This book is a nice addition to my library, as it contains the text of the letters, as well as Tolkien's hand-drawn illustrations and North Pole post markings.
While this book does not relate to his Middle Earth universe, it is easy to recognize the origin of some of its characters. The goblin attack on Santa's cellar presages the Goblin-Elf wars in Lord of the Rings. Santa's elf-secretary Ilbereth is the obvious progenitor of the ancient elf-queen Elbereth. We even get a glimpse of elvish writing and the goblin alphabet!
If you have the chance, buy the new revised version of this book. I have the 1991 reissue edition. It is only 48 pages long, and omits the letters from 1920 - 1924 and from 1939-1942 . The new edition is one hundred pages longer and contains previously unpublished material.

Every December, an envelope from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful color drawing. The letters told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with a troublesome horde of goblins. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, adding yet more humor to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters.

What an original idea for the Holidays!! This book is funny and enjoyable to read. The author has put a new twist on the Santa Clause fairy tale. A very original idea and could become a classic. I have bought several books to give as Christmas presents. This book is for anyone that loves Christmas. The author creatively extended the fairy tale of Christmas into adulthood in this book. You have to read the book to see if the Xanta Clause fairytale is accepted by adults as well as Santa Clause is accepted by children.

Xanta Claus is a hysterically funny, fresh story guaranteed to brighten your holiday. David Kringle, Santa's brother, who realizes his destiny is to start his own fairy tale, Xanta Claus, which starts where his brothers ends. The new fairy tale is an extension of the family business, but is different in every way! David is a slender, handsome man with a quick wit and a certain charisma with the ladies. He is hopeful he will find the one, even after searching for over a thousand years! The Council of Fairy Tales approves the Xanta Claus charter for a one year provisional trial. Immediately the race is on to start the new South Pole based fairy tale. From the not so nice Elf Union appointed elves, rookie reindeer team and their strict trainer, inexperienced nerd head elf, salty cantankerous plant foreman, and the rest of a colorful, hilarious cast of characters, all with one goal, make the Xanta Claus fairy tale a reality.

(I gave it 5 stars because it kept everyone at a family dinner laughing the whole time!)
Perfect for : Personal reading, great host/hostess gift (for the right person!)
In a nutshell: I don't know if my family has laughed this much in quite a while - at least not because of a book! We had relatives over for dinner one evening, and I decided to pull this book out to see what they thought. What I thought would be a quick five minute browse through the book ended up lasting over an hour as we passed the book back and forth, reading the children's letters and how Santa responded to them out loud. I've never had a better time during dinner! This is the perfect gift for someone with a great sense of humor, or someone who needs one! It would also be great after a long day of work, or holiday shopping - just grab a cocktail and start reading - your day will instantly get better! As I learned, this book is also a perfect ice breaker for a gathering - just make sure there are no kids who still believe in Santa, because just like the picture on the cover - this Santa isn't your normal "ho, ho, ho" jolly old Saint Nick, but rather a blunt pot-bellied, tattooed, cigar-smoking, drinking, cursing (not too bad) Santa who is finally telling kids exactly what he thinks!
Extended Review:
You've simply got to get this book this holiday season! If for some reason it offends you - I apologize, but I don't expect it to offend anyone. My parents were here when we read it out loud, and if anyone would have been offended, it would have been my Mom, who took everything in stride and laughed as much as the rest of us! While you are at it, pick up a copy for someone else who deserves a good laugh!
Characters: Santa is hilarious! He's pulling out all the stops and telling kids what the reality of the situation is!
Story-Line: This book is full of letters written by children to Santa, and his responses. Please note that it is NOT a book I would read to a child who still believes in Santa, or any child at all, as it is certainly filled with adult humor.
Readability: I found the book easy to read. One note here is that the kid's letters are in different fonts, and some really look like kids handwriting, which can get a bit tricky in some situations (think of the suggested cocktail above).
Overall: A holiday MUST HAVE this year, especially with the economic fears - everyone needs to laugh about something!

Ever wonder what Santa does with all those letters? (And all those cookies?) After a particularly long, cold night staring at nine smelly reindeer butts, the old man lets loose with the real answers to those stupid, whiny, hard-to-read letters from kids. Turns out, we really do get what we deserve. Dear Billy, I know you honestly believe that the good deeds you rattled off represent your behavior for the entire past year rather than the activities that occurred during the two hours leading up to the writing of this letter. Two hours of good behavior hardly justifies a new Playstation, let alone a trip to Disney World!! Your pal, Santa

Finally, two strong female characters in a book with a sense of humor...sure, Sophie is a bit of a brat, but she has such a self-assured sense of adventure; Auntie Claus sees to it that Sophie develops a kind heart as well, in this beautifully illustrated book so chock full of Christmas that I'm already shopping for those little hard candies! This is a beautiful little book with a captivating heroine. "Olive" is written in a style which will appeal to children and adults alike, and the illustrations are delightful. Priscilla and the Great Santa Search Review

Priscilla and the Great Santa Search

My daughters and I love the Priscilla series (esp. "Priscilla Superstar!"). In general, they are very well written in snappy verse, and the illustrations are adorable -- like crossing Dr. Suess with Kevin Henkes. However, this Priscilla book fell a bit short of the high standard established by the other Priscilla books. The rhymes seem forced, and the story is kind of lame (although the illustrations are still very cute). If you don't already own a Priscilla book, start with "Superstar!" or "Splish-Splash Surprise", both of which are much better than this Santa book.

The Polar Express Review

The Polar Express
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book opens the possibility that Santa Claus -- as presented to most of us -- may not physically exist. It does this in a way that will allow children and their parents to ease into that question, a graceful move from the belief in a living St. Nick, to a belief in the spirit of Christmas.
It begins like this: "On Christmas Eve, many years ago, I lay quietly in my bed. I did not rustle the sheets. I breathed slowly and silently. I was listening for a sound -- a sound a friend had told me I'd never hear -- the ringing of Santa's sleigh.
'There is no Santa,' my friend had insisted, but I knew he was wrong."
From here, we follow a beautifully illustrated story of this young boy's quiet night ride with other children, on the Polar Express train to the North Pole, a "huge city standing alone at the top of the world, filled with factories where every Christmas toy was made."
Our narrator is the fortunate child, picked by Santa, to receive the first gift of that Christmas. He knows exactly what he wants, a simple gift that will help him continue to believe in the magic of Christmas, a silver bell from a reindeer's harness.
He gets his wish, but loses it on the train ride home. However, there's a happy ending -- evidently Santa has found the bell, and put it under the tree. The boy and his little sister admire the beauty of the sound it makes, but their parents say, "Oh, that's too bad....It's broken."
Many years later, the boy's sister and all of his friends can no longer hear the bell.
"Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it does for all who truly believe."
My youngest son at ages 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 has chosen to firmly believe with the narrator, but he's moved around in his reaction to the notion that Santa isn't real. From -- "that's ridiculous, isn't it?" to "Mom...it is ridiculous, isn't it?" This book will let him hold onto the Christmas spirit for as long as he wants, and to return to it whenever he needs it.
This version comes complete with CD's/tapes with readings. Buy the less expensive edition, add a silver bell, and (if you can), read it with the child yourself to give a really special gift.
A wonderful book for those who want to believe in the spirit of Christmas every day of every year.

Trip To The North Pole (The Polar Express: The Movie) Review

Trip To The North Pole (The Polar Express: The Movie)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Said a kindly newspaper writer to a little girl who wasn't sure if Santa Claus was real. "The Polar Express" recalls the sentiment of this letter and in fine style, "Trip to the North Pole" takes readers on a memorable ride.
You know, one thing about trains --- It doesn't matter where they're going, what matters is deciding to get on. So says The Conductor, and in this case, readers will enjoy the chance to get back on board for another story based on "The Polar Express." This novelization takes what you like about the film and combines it with additional material from the original script. It even integrates a portion of the song "When Christmas Comes to Town" directly into the story.
Fans of the film who are old enough to read chapter novels will appreciate the extra attention to detail given in this story. Much of the dialogue is extended and there are also nice bonsues, such as the Hero Boy (who is referred to simply as "The Boy" in the text) shaking his head at a display he finds fake and extended ramblings from the Know-it-All Boy. If your kids enjoyed the film, but aren't yet old enough to read chapter boosk, you might consider reading this story aloud to them.
Normally, I find books based on movies that were based on books in the first place to often be so-so at best. But this is a Christmas treat for all fans of the film who truly believe. This book includes fifteen still photos from the film, all in color.
