How I Ski: Expert Alpine Skiing Demystified Review

How I Ski: Expert Alpine Skiing Demystified

I found this book based on the title, read as much as I could from the previews and than ordered it express for the rest of it. Of course it cannot replace a good teacher, but there aren't too many of those around, so this book, a sense of your own capabilities and a dose of dedication will definitely boost your alpine skiing career.
The book is fun to read, repeats over and over again without ever feeling repetitive and thereby succeeds in delivering its message: how skiing works if done well. The style, explaining how something should work and feel while skiing works perfectly for me.

Performance Skiing: Training and Techniques to Make You a Better Alpine Skier Review

A very practical book with a focus on the physical skills involved in alpine skiing. The best combined collection of off-hill and on-hill training exercises I've seen and, as a bonus, excellent race skill development tips from an experienced coach (who's also done it himself). If you are interested in philosophy or the Newtonian physics of a ski turn, there are other books. If you like to (or want to learn to) ski hard, this is a great book.

Whether you ski competitively or recreationally, you know that great skiing requires great control. Only with total command of your body can you achieve and maintain balance in motion. Exceptionally good skiing and performance skiing does not come from wearing a flashy powder suit. Performance skiing comes form the condition of the motor under all the stretch neon and Gore-Tex.

How the Racers Ski Review

How the Racers Ski

I read this book on the advice of a fellow ski journeyman (now renowned Aspen Mountain Ski Instructor, Paul Wade) in the mid 70's as an instructor at Sugarbush, Vt. I've been skiing all my life and this book almost single handedly - along with Paul's advice - changed my skiing forever delivering me to the 'next level' ... the magic "it" where the "there" is. Witherall's clear and concise writing took me from an excellent skier [albeit sliding, sometimes carved turns] to an expert, consistently on the ski's edge with beautiful ripped and carved turns. Even with shorter, phatter skiis of 2004, Witherall's writing is still current and uniquely relevant, if not even more so because skiis have gotten so much better as described by Witherall [maybe even predicted? where yesterday's term "sidecut" means the same as today's "parabolic"] ...If you understand how skiis work, and Witherall documents this, you'll understand even more how phat, tapered waist, i.e parabolic, skiis will help you, partner with you, to carve perfect turns. I hear this book has been controversial, that not everyone agree's with Witherall [in Western US ski teaching camps with softer snow conditions, there's more emphasis on equal weighting and "sliding" your skis], but until otherwise advised, this book has no equal for learning how skiis work and how to carve and rip through harder packed, iced, Eastern US ski conditions. It will take you to a rad, bad and oh so fine expert level wherever you ski, however freestyle you go.

In this book Witherell provided competitive skiers with a guide to modern racing technique and offers recreational skiers a more natural and efficient way to ski than is usually taught in ski schools. More than 100 photographs and drawings.

Free-Heel Skiing: Telemark and Parallel Techniques for All Conditions (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series) Review

Paul Parker wrote the definitive discourse on off-the-run skiing with his first edition of this book. Time has only improved it. Every skier from the expert backcountry telemarker to the improving bunny-hill snowplower MUST read this book. What Mr. Parker has done is to condense all the theories and techniques and observations of the skiing community into a simple, progressive instructional guide. He starts with very basic snowplowing and ends with telemarking, and in between shows how all the different styles are linked and flow into each other. All of it is described with marvelous clarity and engaging style. The 2nd edition adds stories, commentaries, and pictures which motivate the reader to get out into the snow and play! My only complaint is that they don't publish a waterproof small-size edition that I can take out skiing with me!

My intentions are always good, but I ski rarely and as a result never improve! Howards book has given me new inspiration! There is hope on the horizon, or maybe that should be hope on the fall line! Howards drills are so clear and easy even I can do them! He took my husband from blue to black in one run and after reading his book I think I can do it too! I even found out I am tightening my boots incorrectly! There is no aspect of skiing he doesn't cover in an entertaining and easy to understand style. I would love to have a tear out "cheat sheet" to put in my pocket! (New product idea, Mr. Davis?). If you aren't lucky enough to have Howard as a ski instructor as my husband was, this book is as important as the equipment Howard recommends! Don't go on a ski trip without it! DO go to Telluride to experience Howard in person, he is amazing! He makes skiing feel effortless, a true miracle for me! That cute Australian accent doesn't hurt either!

This book is great. A beginner or even an intermediate may find much of the information to be too advanced to be useful. Advanced skiers should find it to be an excellent resource.
The book, among other things emphasizes the importance of steering, espescially in the important transition phase between turns. (Intermediate and even advanced skiers who learn how to edge effectively, often abandon their steering skills and simply step from the outside edge of one ski to the outside edge of the other ski.) The mechanics of effective steering are explained well as is the importance of the skill in more difficult terrain.
Fundamentals are emphasized. The modifications and different blends of skills which are required on moguls, powder, crud, steeps, ice and in the trees are also explained very well.
