I would recommend libraries to have this book on their shelves.

Santa Claus has finally spoken on the subject of parenting. Who is better suited to give advice than the one who has brought joy and delight to children for as long as anyone can remember? In this fictional account, Santa commissioned author and lecturer Roland Trujillo to publish this book after granting an interview with him at the North Pole. What are "time outs Santa Style?" How does Santa handle discipline and communication issues? What's on Santa's do's and don'ts list? What is Santa's secret to making chores fun and easy? What does Santa say to parents about getting off to a good start? You'll find the answers to these questions and more in this book, destined to become a classic. Roland's new book is a Santa story for grownups with many teachable moments. Your kids will listen when you say "Santa says."

The Polish Way: A Thousand-Year History of the Poles and Their Culture Review

The Polish Way: A Thousand-Year History of the Poles and Their Culture

In the Polish Way, Zamoyski sets out to create a "reasonable synthesis" of Polish history from what he describes as the body of patronizing foreign works and defensively nationalistic Polish ones. He succeeds reasonably well in this goal. If he does lean at times toward nationalism in describing the "Polish Way" - religious tolerance, reliance on legal protections, respect for human rights - it can be excused because of his strictly factual approach and because of the important role the Zamoyski family played in much of the history he describes.
For me, though, there are two factors that make this such an excellent introductory history - one of the best one volume national histories I have read. First, the book skillfully weaves the history of ideas (primarily painting, music, architecture, literature and law) into the political and military narrative. I always found these sections both interesting and well integrated into the sweep of historical events. Second, the numerous maps, genealogies, photographs and other exhibits - including a Polish pronunciation guide - are invaluable to a reader, like me, with little or no prior knowledge of Polish history. I wish more authors and editors of so-called "popular histories" would pay as much attention to these important finishing touches.
True to his goal of producing a synthesis, Zamoyski describes the important themes in Polish history but stops short of providing analysis or conclusions. In describing changes in Poland's political system, he begs analysis of the eventual weakness of early Polish democracy in the absence of a "nation" based on ethnicity, religion, language or a common conception of a territorial homeland and of the strength of today's Poland partially, according to the author, because of its relative homogeneity.
This analysis would be important for a clear understanding of modern Poland and Europe (and other multi-ethnic, multi-lingual democracies). I plan to look for it in other books. The "Polish Way" does an excellent job at introducing the terrain.

The Quiet Limit of the World: A Journey to the North Pole to Investigate Global Warming Review

The Quiet Limit of the World: A Journey to the North Pole to Investigate Global Warming

Scientists are becoming the new explorers and this book takes that point of view. In the same way that the photographer Hurley was taken aboard the Endurance to chronicle their achievement to the Antarctic in 1914, Grady is brought along on this trip to chronicle the exploration and discovery of the effects of global warming on the Arctic--the seeming linchpin of the climate change debate. If global warming is happening, it is happening here. Because scientists aren't always the best writers, they bring along Grady because of his experience in writing science and communicating to a larger audience. They don't want their discovery to go unheard, slipped into a report on some bureaucrat's desk. They want you and me to know so that we can make choices. Here's the evidence, Grady says, and--while we're at it, because I know you might like the adventure--here's the story, complete with characters, action and suspense. He also gives the reader--as the modern day exploration happens--a short history of Arctic exploration, global warming, and Arctic travel. I found myself making notes of all the original works he mentions, so I could read them later in their completed form. Deftly woven so that the reader becomes educated and enthralled, The Quiet Limit of the World is no ordinary travel adventure. This adventure has consequences for everyone, and Grady makes sure you are taken along for the ride.

With 16 pp b&w illustrations. The five hottest years since records have been kept are, in descending order, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, and 1992. There is no longer a serious debate about whether global warming is a reality. Each year, disturbed weather patterns - severe winters, historic floods, freak droughts - provide devastating evidence of climatic change. The question is whether man is altering the very nature of life on Earth. In the summer of 1994, Wayne Grady joined a team of scientists aboard the Canadian icebreaker Louis S. St. Laurent on a research trip to the North Pole. Accompanied by the US icebreaker Polar Sea, the ship set off from Victoria, British Columbia to investigate the effects of global warming at the planet’s northernmost reach.Weaving natural science, oceanography, and Arctic history through the narrative, Grady chronicles that two-month trip. The Quiet Limit of the World reveals the dedication and ingenuity of the scientists. It depicts the unexpected richness and beauty of the north. And it raises some profoundly disturbing questions. The expedition showed beyond a doubt the connectedness of the world’s oceans. The Arctic can no longer be viewed as a one-dimensional entry in climate models. The scientists confirmed what had long been suspected: wastes dumped into southern waters eventually find their way into the Arctic, contaminating the food chain. More alarming was the discovery that greater amounts of warm Atlantic water are being pushed into the Arctic than ever before. Current predictions of a shrinking polar ice cap are based solely on atmospheric warming. The new findings suggest that polar ice is also being attacked from below, accelerating the melting process. This lends even greater urgency to what is already the most pressing environmental issue of our day. From the Hardcover edition.

Eternal I.V. Pole is a highly touching novel that deals with the personal life of the author.Indeed a highly touching book that will make people stop and think about the good opportunities one has in life.It equally makes one understand spirituality in a better manner, although exquisitely told, the words are simple, yet complex. The vital reality of religious faith is also geared into a more friendly guise of explanation and loving testimony. How a young torture survivor fought back, and won. A woman who, although born disabled, became a Buddhist religious leader.Changing lives for the good, and fought back against medical bands of criminals. The Legend of the Twenty-First North Pole Santa Review

The Legend of the Twenty-First North Pole Santa
Average Reviews:

The story of "Twenty-First North Pole Santa" is excruciatingly politically correct (if I had to read about the main character's "proud Athabascan heritage" one more time I was going to scream), but that's not why I've given it a low rating. I'm giving it a low rating because the book seriously needed an editor who was competent of grammar and style. It obviously didn't have one. Zahn is a repetitive and choppy author; and she apparently doesn't know what a question mark is or how it is used to indicate an interrogative sentence. This is not of publishable quality.
I bought this book for my young son, but I don't know that I'll let him keep it. The story is no great shakes, and the writing itself is subpar. I don't want him to think that this is good authorship!

A book based on the lunacy that the Earth's magnetic poles will do a 90 degree shift when secret planet X cruises by.
It's ok though because there is an extra earth that lives on the other side of the Sun-we can't see it-and aliens are over there and they might help us and it is all so bloody obvious, until: Those pesky laws of physics are put to play. Oh yeah, The Shriners have something to do with it. Damn the luck.

Scientists exploring the polar regions have long recognized the region's importance in the scheme of human history, and here to survey that importance is a scientific and historical overview of how scientific investigations of the poles have influenced world culture, politics, and decision-making processes. While EXTREMES could've been featured in our Science section, it's reviewed here for its wider interest to any college-level collection strong in either oceanography or world history: its historical background on the poles shouldn't be missed.
