I purchased this book in Tokyo after falling in love with Japanese gardens. Things I like about it includewide content of overview of visual examples of gardens, examples of lanterns, water basins, stepping stones and materials and tools for use in building a garden. Also there are plans for pictured gardens. A disadvantage was that a great amount of space was devoted to bamboo fences/building. Another good book is "A Japanese Touch For Your Garden", K. Seike, M Kudo, D. Engel

here in Rio de Janeiro we have a marvelous bamboo course that drove me to look for bamboo books.
when I bought both "bamboo fences" and "building bamboo fences" my eldest daughter has asked me why bamboo fences by the same author(isao yoshikawa)?
This wonderful way to "look inside" the books gives us the unique chance to choose without a blind system.
bamboo fences is a remarkable photo book about this milenar japanese technique.in the building bamboo fences half the book is another basket of splendid fence photos and the other half the drawings show how to do them.
My advice: buy both together and do not tell your kids.

"Building Bamboo Fences" has all the information you will need to build your own bamboo fence. Additionally, Mr. Yoshida has included a brief history of bamboo fences in Japan, a complete glossary of terms and many beautiful color photographs for inspiration. Fence diagrams range from simple see-through fences to more complex bamboo screening fences. The diagrams, techniques, and instructions for building different types of bamboo fences are clear, complete, easy to follow and even include tips on how to correct any problems you may have in construction. I turned an open work bamboo fence diagram into a trellis for my climbing rose bush in one afternoon. Whether you are looking to build simple edgings for garden paths or a full-screen fence - this is the book to use.
