The 12-Foot Teepee: A Survivor's Tale Review

The 12-Foot Teepee: A Survivor's Tale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Burdened with the emotional debris from an abused childhood, plagued by myriad crises, Maggie launches an improbable quest for spiritual rebirth by building a teepee in her backyard.
Amidst oak trees and blackberry brambles, Maggie finds her salvation, an untraditional path for sure, but it works for her. Her ironic view of the world and sense of humor never abandon her.
Maggie's story faces painful issues that we all need to face, sooner or later. What do you do when your life falls apart? When your health fails? When your career self-destructs? When the money runs out? What if it all goes bad at the same time?
This is a book about coping with your worst fears and finding faith when faith is the only thing left ... and somehow, with all of that, coming out a whole person.
We all decide what will define us. When bad stuff happens, regular people - me, you, everyone - tend to let the bad stuff that happens TO us define us. To get past that, to move on, you need to know in your gut that who you are and what has happened to you are not the same. You need to let the bad stuff go, hand it off to whatever higher power you recognize, and move on.
For Maggie, the road to healing was the building of a teepee which, to her, became analogous to climbing a mountain.
The book deals with painful issues: child abuse and getting past it as an adult; health, aging, lack of money, loss of career and status ... but in the end, it's about finding joy despite disasters and loving life, even when life doesn't seem to love you.
It's a sad book, a funny book, a shocking book, a relevant book ... and a great read.

Introduction to Anthroposophical Medicine: Extending the Art of Healing Review

Introduction to Anthroposophical Medicine: Extending the Art of Healing

I wish there were smart, open-minded, passionate physicians willing to learn about these most complete anthroposophically-related treatments of conditions...truly the heart, the head, and the hands are involved in recovery. Not alone the physical body is addressed, but the other "bodies" within it, etheric, astral and "I"...fascinating, and true (as the reader's heart will acknowledge)

In modern times, Western societies have become increasingly familiar and comfortable with the numerous complementary and alternative forms of medicine, often derived from Eastern sources. Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophical medicine, founded in the early part of the twentieth century, renews the origin of Western medicine. But unlike many modern medical practices based on reductionist, materialistic thinking, Steiner's holistic system encompasses a picture of the human being as an entity of body, soul, and spirit. Anthroposophical medicine brings harmony to these different aspects of the human constitution.Victor Bott, a medical doctor, offers a comprehensive overview of this remarkable system of medicine. He presents a new approach to understanding various types of diseases, including a discussion on the stages of human development; the roles of organs such as the lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart; specific diseases; and indications about why people become ill. He also discusses the increasing prevalence of cancer and specific phenomena such as the menstrual cycle. This volume will illuminate medical practitioners and therapists who want to learn more about anthroposophical medicine and anyone who would like a deeper understanding of diseases and a key medical approach to dealing with them.

Encyclopedia of Prisons and Correctional Facilities Review

Encyclopedia of Prisons and Correctional Facilities
Average Reviews:

The problem with a book like this is, the minute it's published, it's obsolete. Prisons are getting worse by the day. For instance, it states here that women at MCI-Framingham in Massachusetts, receive training in building trades and have access to programs through Boston University. That's not entirely true. "Programs" indicates something tangible like a degree but BU's endowment can only go so far; the state should kick in (especially since state law mandates it) but doesn't. Soon (as of this date Oct. 9, 2007), however, women at Framingham will be provided culinary arts and cosmetology programs, skills once considered traditionally "female" (and obviously still are). But they only have room for about 12 people at a time. There are roughly 1080 inmates in this 452 capacity prison. Right now, there is nothing else offered that is a marketable skill. And that's just the women's prison. An entire book would need to be written to touch on the severe deficiencies within the men's prisons.
I gave this book 4 stars because it doesn't cover enough about Massachusetts prisons, which I have discovered has one of the worst systems in the country. It is this silence that allows it to remain so. MA has the highest rate of over classified inmates (inmates who are in max should be in med, and med in min, etc.), second highest percentage of innocent people incarcerated (Illinois is number 1), the highest suicide rate in DYS in the nation, etc.

This is an excellent reference book for all acupoints. The information for each point details the location, function, and treatment modalities that could be used on it. Extremely useful for TCM students and practitioners. I highly recommend it.

An understanding of acu-points is vital not only for acupuncturists but also for bodyworkers. This user-friendly manual contains current, comprehensive information for both groups, with special emphasis on how shiatsu and tuina therapists can best utilize "point knowledge” in their practice. Renowned experts Chris Jarmey and Ilaira Bouratinos use succinct text, a well-organized framework, and detailed color anatomical illustrations to clarify the complexities of acu-points. In keeping with normal practice, the authors give the precise anatomical location of a point and illustrate it with a dot, along with alternative locations where relevant. However, the book goes further by delineating the larger area where the point can be activated by pressure, gua sha, and other means. In addition, it explains the optimum physical position for treatment via acupuncture, acupressure, and other strategies, as treatment positions can vary according to the method of point stimulation. The book also documents the distribution of sensation resulting from point stimulation, and differentiates between pressure and needle application where appropriate. A Practical Guide to Acu-Points presents a wealth of carefully researched information equally valuable for professionals, students, and conscientious practitioners.

Biomagnetic and Herbal Therapy Review

Biomagnetic and Herbal Therapy
Average Reviews:

This book have been written with the power of love. Why do I say that? Because we can feel the compassion all along the chapter. I like to read someone who walk his talk. When I read someone, to be interested and stay interested all along the chapters, the words must resonate in me. It sure did! Otherwise, I would have felt bored pretty quickly. This book leads us through the coming paradigm shift : prevention and natural healing. For sure, it's experience at work! And, as we all know, no money can buy experience! The book is clear, well documented, and I did appreciate the author's integrity. I hope someone will translate this book in french very soon, because here, in Quebec, it would be a big hit, believe me, we need to know more about biomagnetic.

Magnet Therapy: The Gentle and Effective Way to Balance Body Systems Review

Magnet Therapy: The Gentle and Effective Way to Balance Body Systems

Very basic look at magnets and not much on therapy. The author makes some interesting links to Ayurvedic medicine but no real insights into how biological systems use magnetic fields despite a chapter on biomagnetism. I wish I had this book when I was in grade seven.

* The complete guide to magnetotherapy--the treatment that promises to revolutionize 21st-century medicine.* Magnet therapy has been used by more than 100 million people worldwide.* Clinical studies show magnet therapy to be an effective treatment for back pain, insomnia, high cholesterol and blood pressure, and many other ailments. The recent discovery of magnetic receptors in the human brain has confirmed what the ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, and Greeks always knew: that human beings are strongly influenced by the Earth's magnetic field, and that by subtly altering our own energy fields with magnets we can restore proper balance to our body systems. This science of magnetotherapy has already been successfully used by more than 100 million people in the United States and around the world. Numerous scientific studies show that many cases of stiff shoulders, back, or neck, unexplained chest pain and frequent headaches, as well as insomnia and general fatigue are actually caused by what is known as Magnetic Deficiency Syndrome, and double-blind tests reveal that magnets have brought rapid relief in 90 percent of these cases.Magnet Therapy presents the history and science of this fascinating subject, explaining why magnets increase oxygenation in the blood, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, reduce pain, enhance cellular regeneration, and may even inhibit tumor growth. The authors detail methods for treating symptoms ranging from asthma to toothaches and weigh the benefits of magnetic necklaces, magnetic belts, and magnetized water, as well as traditional bipolar magnets. For devotees of alternative medicine, Birla and Hemlin explain how magnetotherapy fits into the context of other practices, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, and how it can be used in conjunction with acupuncture, massage, and other therapies. Complete with case studies and resource listings, Magnet Therapy is the comprehensive guide to what promises to be the next medical revolution.

Shiatsu Theory and Practice Review

Shiatsu Theory and Practice
Average Reviews:

In "Shiatsu Theory and Practice" Beresford-Cooke explains in depth the information needed for the serious student of Zen Shiatsu. While there is no substitute for an excellent teacher, Beresford-Cooke's book is the authoratative text. I used this book in conjunction with 108 hours of classroom instruction. The illustrations of the meridians coupled with the description of their associated elements was highly understandable to the student and layperson alike.
In my studies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu is an elective for my program. For others it is a center of concentration for their studies. For all of us, our worn and flagged copies of this book speaks well of it.

Ayurvedic Medicine: The Principles of Traditional Practice Review

Ayurvedic Medicine: The Principles of Traditional Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sebastian Pole is a British practitioner of ayurveda, traditional Chinese and Western herbal medicine as well as a professional teacher of yoga and is a pioneer in the cultivation of organic ayurvedic herbs in the UK, and has had extensive clinical training in ayurvedic clinics and hospitals in India. He has presented the health care community and the ayurvedic profession with what surely will become the definitive textbook of ayurvedic herbal medicine for aspiring practitioners and manual for clinicians in the Western and English-speaking world.
This book has filled a desperate and long-felt need for an English-language work that is at a sufficient level of clinical detail for working and student practitioners of ayurveda. It is replete with color photographs, superbly well-organized details on each herb catalogued, and very well written. I refer to it daily in both my practice and my teaching.
"Ayurvedic Medicine: The Principles of Traditional Practice" provides a deep and broad understanding of the theory underlying ayurvedic pharmacology and therapeutics along with a practical materia medica of over 80 ayurvedic plant remedies, each carefully denoted by its common Indian name, Sanskrit and Latin name, description, color photographs of the herb in both its prepared and fresh forms, energetics, phytoconstitutents, ayurvedic and biomedical actions, indications, contraindications, safety issues, formulations and dosage, along with additional notes.
The work is divided into three main sections. Part 1 presents a history of ayurveda and the development of its materia medica; basic principles (the panch mahabhutas, the three doshas, the saptadhatus, the srota, ayurvedic anatomy, disease etiology and pathology); principles of ayurvedic herbal pharmacology and pharmacy; ayurvedic diagnosis and therapeutics, treatment protocols and the scientific basis for ayurveda's claims. Part 2 presents the plant profiles, herb sourcing, and traditional formulas, and Part 3 contains useful tabular appendices, a glossary, herbal sources, plant name indices, and transliteration and pronunciation notes.
Everyone involved in ayurveda, and in a larger sense everyone involved in or interested in health care, complimentary medicine or herbalism, owes Mr. Pole a huge debt of gratitude for this excellent and very much needed work.
